My grandfather was Italian-American, and he always called fare bella figura, “Lookin’ sharp”. He was mainly a carpenter by trade, but when he went anywhere not work related, he wore a collared polo shirt, slacks, leather loafers and a matching belt. He had a thick mane of silver hair he’d comb up, for fullness, and he always wore cologne. He had swagger. Getting a “Ya look sharp, kid” from him was always the absolute pinnacle of style compliments for me.

We are not Italian but my mother always taught us this. Rich or poor, wear clean, ironed clothes, clean shoes and comb your hair and wear a little makeup. My mother would wake up everyday make her coffee, hair rollers on her hair and make up face done, ready for whatever. Yes the way our family looks represents us as family. But I also know now with my own family that looks aren’t everything what matters most is the inside, and that shows on the outside.

Gina Finch judgement? We judge people every day on how they present themselves. I see women about in clothes that look like p.j’s like they just rolled out of bed. Like it or not it says a lot about a persons mental state and personal habits. In the USA we have become overly casual to a ridiculous level. I’m all about creativity and self expression. In my youth I was very much into self expression. Punk Rock fashion was it for me. It took a lot of effort to look like that. There’s one main reason to get dressed appropriately: to present yourself to the world.
@dawnaustin4556
@dawnaustin4556 3 жыл бұрын
Gina Finch you said it...social programming. All of that should have been rejected as it hasn’t made us better people. It has been specially detrimental for women. I understand your point. It isn’t up to you to change anyone. All you and I can do is to lead by example. Peace!

I’m a first generation Italian American. My family always dressed to go out of the house for anything, even to go pick up the mail. Our clothes were always altered to fit properly and to our best advantage. We all took care of our skin and did our makeup and hair before leaving the house. The men in the family were the same as the women, well groomed and well dressed. We all always wore the finest fabrics we could afford, and the best haircuts. We cleaned and cared for everything we owned including our shoes & purses. These things didn’t make us feel exceptionally special, but made us feel good about ourselves. We’re all proud of our heritage! We dearly love the United States of America, our home and love contributing our heritage to this great country.

This is exactly the way my mother dressed and the way she dressed me when I was under her dress code. Lol. And my mother favored satin bras and panties. Quality fabric. Yes. Simple and elegant yes. Details totally. She was an immigrant to America. She was elegant and understated. Had great taste. She also sewed and worked for fashion houses on 7th Avenue when fashion was still made in America. The thing was not to look "vistosa". Eh vulgar. I guess despite the costuming of the 70s, the classic style I absorbed from my mom both in dress and demeanor assisted me in getting many a good job and to be honest, many a raise because I was viewed as belonging. Yes, hard work. But many people work hard. Not as many know how to dress or speak or when not to speak, just smile politely. I learned this from my mom. Yes, Italians care too much about what others think. But there are upsides to that.

My Japanese mother taught her seven daughters the same type of values of grooming and dressing. My fondest memory is when she would get dressed up to go to the grocery store and I'd watch her apply lipstick before walking out the door. My mother-in-law was Silcilian was a seamstress and dressed in clothes that she made 30 years before and looked very fashionable every day; she would just alter them to keep up with the fashion trends. Impeccable taste and good quality fabric.

I am Italian American and I was also taught the importance of putting some effort into your appearance when you go out. I also learned to sew at an early age and made many of my own clothes in high school. When you know how to construct a garment , you know how to take it apart to alter it . The fit of a garment can make an inexpensive outfit look expensive or an expensive outfit look cheep. I always made my clothes fit properly and altered many clothes for my children.

The Italian woman has a natural / spontaneous good taste in dressing and is always elegant even with simple things. I have lived in Italy for more than 30 years and for me it is not the same thing for them it is simple and natural, in the small towns of the smaller cities and in the centers of the big cities, the women are really elegant, and they care a lot about accessories, shoes, colors and so on, it seems to me that they do not make any effort but that it is a natural gift but not only that, their good taste is also reflected in the food , wine, the interior furnishings of their homes "everything must always be in place" etc etc, I really love this Italian style

I love that you say it’s felt in the blood. There’s a generational identity crisis in my family. My dad’s example, and those of his sisters, my aunts, are what taught me the advise in this video(: I resonate so much with the outlook because it’s how I was raised. As I grow into the woman I want to become, and as I listen to my intuition, I find myself resonating a lot with European Latin cultures. I think a 23 and me will help but I know it’ll be a big mix. Your story gave me confidence to keep following my gut and keep learning about the one I feel and have always felt most connected to. There’s a town in Italy with my last name, and I’ve always taken that as a sign. I will visit one day!

My grandmother is Italian and she dresses like this. Her entire wardrobe is blacks and whites but the patterns and textures and fabrics have a distinct flair that's true to her personality. She dresses well no matter the occasion, especially in the evening. She is an incredible chef and for my mom's birthday she is making eggplant parmesan and cannoli. She was born and raised in New York and either her parents or grandparents were Italian immigrants. She speaks fluent Italian and we had the privilege to visit Italy with her in 2019. We went to Milan, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre and Bologna. It was such a joy and I'd love to go back some day.

It’s so sweet how you dress for your body in a positive way. Nowadays you always hear ‘wear whatever you want regardless of what looks good on you’ so much that it’s refreshing to see this. As a Bengali woman our party clothes are very decorative and it is pretty much acceptable to wear heavy earrings, necklace, bracelet etc all in a set but ever since I’ve started focusing on one statement piece instead of overloading myself with jewellery( I believe that should be reserved only for brides)I can see how much nicer it looks!

“Ill-fitting lingerie can be a fashion disaster” YES!! My mom (she’s not Italian, her family is Irish-American) always use to tell me that your bra is so important, one of the most important parts of your outfit. I see so many girls who wear the wrong bra size and style for their body so often and it annoys me so much! They could be wearing an amazing outfit, but if their bra isn’t supportive and their underwear is too small it ruins the whole thing.

A few days into my first visit to Italy 1982, I had high healed wooden mules on and was wearing a backless black dress to a party. It had sequins highlighting the back area and received so many lovely compliments. I also had bought a gold tone lipstick and a new handbag. I felt like the queen bee!! back home in Scotland I never wore the dress or shoes but 2 years later, back in italy, out they came. so very lovely.I also feel that I brought a palazzo pants trend back to Glasgow and two years later a black and white cigar pant trend. All items were good quality and lasted forever. I adore the Italian style. My only faux pas one year was a Venezia hat!! But it made for the best photo ever with the sunset behind my auburn hair with the hat on top!! such wonderful memories. xxx loved this video thank you xxx

I definitely agree with the the “bold” description. I’m from Melbourne and we wear mostly black. Living in Calabria for the last two and a bit years I hear all the time that I dress boringly. I think it’s mainly to do with colour - the women here wear much more bold colours such as red. I also haven’t conquered cobblestones yet so I’m wearing more flats. Since I’ve moved here though I’ve started having my clothes tailored and I’m a regular customer at Intimissimi, so I’m learning!

You may not feel comfortable wearing a sari in western locations but wouldn’t it be beautiful to honor your own culture by merging the two. Indian fabrics can be colorful and elegant. Indian women look very feminine in the draped fabrics. I don’t think I have ever seen a man that didn’t look dashing in a Nehru style jacket. Annalisa’s guidelines are great and general enough to be applied in other cultures as well. There is beauty and style everywhere on the planet. We just need to be open to it.

I've watched this video before and on re-watching it, it struck me about how some of the "rules" so to speak of dressing Italian, really reflect the entire Italian attitude toward life - like taking your time and enjoying your coffee, your breakfast, your dinner, taking time to enjoy life, etc. I see that reflected in what you're saying about clothes in, not just going for quality, but in having one statement piece that you are fully appreciating and inviting others to appreciate, and of the attitude about displaying what one thinks is special about her (or his, I suppose) self. I don't know if you will see this comment, but I miss your fashion videos!

I am Italian. I love the part were you talk about our ability to know our body and find clothes that fit us better, enhancing and focusing on the parts of our body that we love the most. I think this really helps with confidence and with that attitude that many Italian girls and women have. It's not about being beautiful. It's all about knowing and loving yourself. Thank you really accurate video!

What a pleasure it is to learn the full meaning of the expression from this video. Xoxo

I am 100% Italian American...many of the things you say here were handed down to me by my mother, and to her by her grandmother. I tend toward simple lines and neutral tones...when I was a bit younger I did like more color. For me I’m only 5 2” and have always had slim legs with a more curvaceous top..lol..so the legs were always highlighted with a simple solid color top and maybe some good strappy sandals or a solid feminine pump. and a nice piece of simple but noticeable necklace. My grandmother born in Italy was known and called the Duchess! She never left the house without the dress, shoes, gloves, handbag all coordinated and matched perfectly. With a perfect red lip. Such style...iconic and classic. I love it! Thank you for your lovely video...blessings to you ❤️💄❤️

Paisana, bella. I am part Italian, Spanish & Portuguese, with a smidgen of Middle Eastern. Growing up my Nonna always made sure she was dressed and had perfume & either powdered face or lipstick and always clean & crisp just like you said. The funny thing is she was Spanish from Andalusia and she always said you always be sure to look nice and wear clean, crisp, classy clothes and always smell nice. Never let yourself be too lazy to look good. To this day I live by her advice. I think if you are of the Mediterranean back round there is the common sense of dress and appearance. Love it.

I love going to Italy. I work very hard to not look like a “tourist”! I have noticed even though the Italian women are wearing higher heeled shoes, their heels were calloused. Uniformly! I’m not kidding. My sister and I have talked so many times about wanting to open an American style nail salon with the chairs etc. I’ve been told Italian women do their own pedicures and the focus is on the nail polish. Thank you for the tips in any event!

So I am not sure if things have changed a little but I remember when I lived in Italy pedicures and manicures were rather expensive, once I moved to the US I learned they are super affordable so I too now get them done regularly... when i was in Italy I also use to do my own and occasionally splurge. I love this observation! THANK YOU for sharing it! 😀

When I went to Italy I remember seeing women running around in their high heels and wondering how they did it! I would love to get better with walking in heels. Can you do a video about that? Also, I see a lot of parallels between French style and italian style with a key difference being, French women seem to gravitate more to flats than heels. This just based videos I watched about French vs. Italian style.

My grandmother was from southern italy while I cant tell you as in detail as this lady went I can tell you looks were very important almost to a fault though. Her sayings were “you could never be to skinny or too rich” and “look nice for a rich boy to marry you”. Looking as clean and put together as possible is how she expected her and her family to look. Idk if its consistant throughout all of italy but she definitely really focused on clean and neat as her style. Also I rarely remember my grandmother in very high heels but she was 5’11-6’0 and was a very tall woman naturally

I'm mexican, and my mom and my grandma always taught me to be elegant (elegant, but not fancy) everywhere I go, at the beginning I thought it was really cruel that people act different when you look pretty, but were mean or just ignore you when you dress poorly, now as an adult I still thinking the same, but dressing good and elegant is a way to care about yourself, and that's what my mom and my grandma actually wanted to teach me ♥️
