Interesting! We drove a shallow point into the ground around June of last year and have a nice little pitcher pump on top of it. It consists of a 3 foot sand point and 10 feet of galvanized steel pipe and we pounded it down with a post driver. After digging 4.5 feet down with a post hole digger and then reaching nothing but wet mud, we drove the rest of the way. It wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy. We got down about 2 inches for every hard 24-30 pounds at it. It pumps us nice clear water. So, about 11 feet is underground and 2 feet above ground. I have plans to do another well and this is what brought me here. I love your method. The first time that I mentioned, I shopped professional well drillers to come and they turned down shallow well and quoted me deep wells to the tune of 10-15k. I am only on a third of and acre and want it for more veggies and fruit trees so that price was a bit much. I researched, emailed SWFWMD southwest fl water management district(I'm in central FL) and asked some probing questions. They are the ones that told me that my water table was 4.5 feet down due to records of wells driven nearby and this is what motivated me to DIY. I want to irrigate now, but don't want to get rid of my novelty pitcher pump. My young kids, neigbors, family and friends love it. There is a daycare on the property as well so the kids love it. Anyway, I am back at researching how to do one for irrigation with a motor on it. I have a couple questions if you don't mind me asking. How will I know if the water that I've found would be sufficient enough for a motor and irrigation? Also, I have to use a 2 foot pipe since it is a DIY per permitting. Can I still do this with a sand point and a 2 inch steel galvanized pipe? Your pipe looks to be 4 inches. Thanks for reading my life story. =)
@3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 3 жыл бұрын
My casing is 4 inches, but my pipe is 2 inches inside of it. Your idea is great for irrigation. Starting out you might find resistance if you try to pull too much water from the motor. Once channels are formed in the ground from water being pulled out, it will subside allowing more water to be pumped. Since you are in Florida and your water table is where it is, you should be great pulling water. I hope you let me know how it goes! :)

@@3BricksHigher Okay, I sure will let you know of the progress...and thanks for responding. Can you tell me the purpose of having a casing? And does your 4 inch pipe have a sand point inside of it? Or just a 2 inch pipe with a foot valve? I assume it's like one big straw with a small straw inside and the 2 inch pipe can be pulled out when needed? I don't know anything about a casing being that I simply used a sandpoint and the 2 inch pole.
@3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 3 жыл бұрын
@@00SkaterChick00 the casing surrounds the 2 inch pipe and holds water for the 2 inch pipe to draw from. Since it holds a lot of water, it allows a larger quantity of water to be pulled.

I have another quick question! Last time we drove a sand point. This time, we’d like to use casing. When we dig down and get to the water bearing sand, it is(“it was”, I’m reflecting on the last well we dug down 4feet to the water bearing sand)hard to pull it up as it just falls out of the digger. How will we ever get the casing down deeper if we can’t dig anymore? I assume that once we find the water bearing sand that we need to dig down a few more feet to let the water trickle into the casing, right? Or, do you think a sand point would work well with a motor on it? Thanks for reading.

I am a hydrogeologist for an agency that I will not name here. (Roll Tide) The noise and geyser reported in the video was likely triggered by punching through a clay layer to an aquifer beneath that was under pressure. Hydraulic head is the term used to describe how high the water level rises in the pipe after punching through. This happens because the recharge point for the aquifer is at a higher elevation - pressurizing the aquifer under confined/semiconfined conditions (clay layer). The mud slumping into the borehole is not an uncommon problem. You are probably more in silts and fine grained sediments when that happens. Advancing the casing as far as possible and then augering inside the casing is how some wells are set. I don't think your pipe driven into the mud is going to draw much water. You need a filterpack to allow water to enter the casing without clogging up the well screen. Coarse sand would work better than gravel for filtering out sediment, though flow will be better with gravel. The industry standard for well screens is called ten slot. You'd probably be better off cutting slits a saw blade width wide .25" -.5" apart with a saws all or hacksaw than drilling holes because it allows you to use a finer filter material. Between the filter pack and surface bentonite clay pellets should be placed to seal off the borehole. A concrete well pad roughly 2' square at surface is standard.

@@wesleyedwards2764 Wow, Wes, I really appreciate all that info. Sounds like you've been around this stuff a while. I gave up trying to bury the 4" PVC casing into the mud, (for a 2 pipe deep well system) and just drove in an 1" 1/4 steel line with what turned out to be a defective sand point, for a single line shallow well system. I had 6-7' of water in the pipe, but the point was so clogged from "corrosion" (not sand clogged), that my Goulds pump couldn't hardly suck any water through the screen. I found this out after I pulled the piping out yesterday, and pressure tested it, and visually saw the semi clogged ports. Live and learn the hard way. New points aren't always good, if they've been sitting around a few decades. Thanks again for your your thoughts, Wes.

@@3BricksHigher Now that I have a brand new Simmons 1 1/4", 4' sand point, and is driven to a depth of 25', (with over 6' of water in the vertical pipe), I still can't get the Goulds J5 1/2 HP pump to flow any water. The hand pump will pump water, and the 1 way valve will hold the column of water, and there aren't any vacuum leaks on the suction side of the J5 pump, which will continue to draw cold water out of the ground, but at an excessively low rate. When I remove the check valve, (at the top of the pipe), and install my pressure testing fixture which will blow in 90 lbs of air pressure from my compressor, and also have a hose bib to pump 50 lbs of water into my 1 1/4 standing well pipe, the water backs up, and blows out the air line, when I disconnect it from its fitting. I was hoping this fixture would help clear any obstructions at the sand point in the ground. As mentioned B4, our area is all sand, no clay. I have 2 other shallow wells on my lot that work fine. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have pumped literally hundreds of gallons of water from this well without issue. Because of this, it has opened "channels" where the water fills the casing up quicker. The pump would not need to be faster than your fill rate. Other than that, you should be good with a tank and pump.

When I pull the digging auger up, everything drip back in the hole, nothing left to put on the ground above. Did this happened to you? And what did you do?
@3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 4 жыл бұрын
Actually it did happen to us. In the video, just in front of the water pump you'll see an upside down white 5 gallon bucket. That is the original hole that gave us the muddy water. We hit that about 10 feet down. We moved about 3 feet over and dug where you see the well. That muddy water was just a pocket of water and is not the water table. This confuses many of folks. If you hit muddy water it will never be clear. If you hit the sand/quartz layer you are in the actual water table and you'll be good to go. We missed that water pocket by just going over 3 feet. Frustrating because of the time spent on the 1st hole, but rewarding once we pasted that 10 foot deep section without hitting the muddy water. Good luck to you. Thank you for watching the video. I hope I was of some help!

@@3BricksHigher as I mentioned elsewhere in comments on this video, do a search on ebay for well augers. They make really neat ones nowadays where the auger head (the digging part) has a rope attached to it and slides up and down the attachments of the auger pole, all the way up to the surface where you are standing. So that when it is time to pull the dirt you dug up to tue surface, you just pull the rope, and it brings the auger head to the surface. You no longer have to pull all 20 plus feet of extension pipes out of the hole. This same company makes the bailer attachnent. All together, for a 33 foot extension kit, the auger, the rope, and bailer, I believe they charge $400 and free shipping. That's currently what I plan to buy, but havent yet. And because you no longer have to pull all of the attachments out of the hole each time, you no longer need 4 guys to help lift it out of the hole when the auger head is full of dirt and 20 plus feet into the ground. Only 1 person is needed, to pull the rope. I assume this would make your suctioning issues no longer a problem.

So if I place a 4” pipe with cap down to the water table and install a hand pup just like yours should I just be able to hand pump that pump a few hundred time and start to suck out water?? Or do you need to first run a hose down there, fill the pipe up with water and then start pump until the water is clean?

On the cap end is where you drill all of the holes. That allows the water to flow into the casing. When you install the hand pump there is a 1 1/2 inch pipe that is attached to it. It goes down into the casing and rests about 2 feet from the bottom. You prime the pump and start pulling water. It only takes a few pumps to get the water to the top. No hose needed 👍

After you glue the cap on the piece with all of the holes, you lower it down and then carefully 'C' clamp it (preventing it from dropping down into the hole, resting on either side of the ground hole) while you glue the next piece to it. After it dries, you lower it and repeat it once more. It does not take a long time for the glue to strengthen.

Does the pebble filter clog with muck after a while ? Can you do anything about that except start again ? How long has your lasted without clogging ?
@3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 5 жыл бұрын
Since we dug into the water table 4 feet, it should never clog. Keep in mind the sand and quartz are below solid clay. The clay will not wash off as the water flows from pumping. Keep in mind that as you pump the water, you will pull sand and create channels through it. Once the channels are created, you should have just clear water. I use this pump to water our trees and bushes (actually have a vid about that posting this monday) around 3 times per week. Around 50 gallons total per week. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask! :)

Why not a electric pump?or can the well handle a shallow well electric pump
@3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 4 жыл бұрын
Yes an electric pump can be used. I believe it is called a jet pump. Since my Wife wanted an old times hand pump that is what I installed. This particular well I think could handle an electric pump if larger channels were made from the water movement as water was pumped. (I hope that makes sense?) The larger the channels for the water to flow through, the quicker the water replenishes the well.

I have tried this before. My problem was that when I hit water at about 12 feet, the tool would no longer hold the mud so I could pull it up. It would all slide out and the result was I couldn't go deeper. How do you get around that?
@3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 4 жыл бұрын
We actually did the same thing. If you look in the video you will see an upside down 5 gallon bucket. That was our 1st hole and we hit mud around 11 feet. Since we didn't hit the white sand and quartz we literally moved over 4 feet and the hole stayed dry until we hit at the 20 feet mark. The muddy water is just a pocket of water and not a spring or aquifer. You were close though!

Let me ask you this. Our water table is 53 feet down, we used a sand point and pounded a well 74 feet deep with 19 feet of water, blew the well out with a 4 cfm air compressor. We have drop pipe and a 2 stage sta-rite vertical pump and only pulling water at about 1 gallon in 2 minutes, not good. Would you say we are in muck or not water vain?
@3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 3 жыл бұрын
If you are pulling clear water then you aren't in muck. Do you think you could be pulling a vacuum from the bottom of the well? Regardless is you have the 3/4 or 1 horse pump, you are pulling around half of what you should be pulling. If it is a vacuum issue it should ease off once the water erodes channels around the bottom of the pump allowing water to flow easier. The more you run it the better it should flow.

Sure, to get started. I'm not sure how the extensions would work. At deeper depths, I'm guessing if they are buckled from torque or speed, inside of the hole it would be horrible trying to remove them from the hole. @3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 4 жыл бұрын
You would need to check with local gov'ment to see if you need a permit. The hand auger is made of steel. Harder than coral so maybe? Since you are in Fla, I'm sure you've heard of Thomasville? I'm near there. Now I will say although this well hasn't ran dry (knock on wood) I don't think it would keep my house running daily. From the test I received back it believe I tapped a spring. Location and water table depth will depend on how much you can draw from your well. "Put the face down on it and start turning" :) That's how you will find out.

@3BricksHigher
@3BricksHigher 4 жыл бұрын
We had a layer of rocks about 8 inches thick. It slowed the process, but we were able to get through it. We dug mostly through hard clay. I would hate to imagine digging through a lot of rock. When I was younger I was in the FFA and participated in land judging. There, I was taught to look for how the land is layered just by driving down roads. Some roads are dug through hills allowing you to see the layers of earth on each side of the road. Our area was clay so I knew I should be ok. Look around for clues like this to help you decide your area's land make up. Hope this helps!

Henry how to buy land on the cheap Find state and county or counties you can call home 1. Ask county what taxes are 2. Ask about building codes you really only want counties that only have power pole and box along with septic 3 ask for their tax seized list some have attorneys handeling the sales and they will send you list for free or charge 10-15.00 4. When you get list look at resale these are properties that came up on original sales and didn’t sell ( investors want quick fix ups to flip or rent not land) 5 walk the properties your interested in never buy sight unseen 6 resales don’t require a set start bid amount THAT can be your savings and you don’t have to stand on court steps to place bid on bidding day just submit your bid . 7 when you get your land go to county clerk file homestead. It’s free and protects you from IRS and law suits as accidents do happen also if your 65 file for cap on taxes 😁 so no matter what your taxes never go up 😁 No building codes means you can build yourself and not get raped on permits and inspections. Or you can do shed conversion do the inside work yourself will save you money you can live in it while working on it or Mobile home you see the sky is the limit to what you can call home. I hope this helps you see your dream as it did for me

Also shed conversion is rent to own way cheaper than apt rent and no closing cost also no credit check you can get them to frame out inside to floor plan you choose or on way cheaper side do it yourself. If living down south I can tell you how to build a log cabin using non treated landscape timber 😁 must seal it after you build if your younger and living up north use the timber on your land and seal it will last a life time but don’t let fear stop you just roll up those sleeves 😁

Actually it isn't strange at all. The 322 foot well was dug to reach the Florida Aquifer which is a massive body of water. If everyone pulled from shallow wells, we would have to depend on rain water replenishing them to prevent shortage. I know of folks around here that have 600 feet deep wells, but mostly these are farmers pulling water to grow crops.
