Came back after making my first squared hole, to say thanks for the idea of using a squared file... The best one from internet... THanks Btw... I did not use a press to push down the file, but doing a litle X on the round hole with a small cutting disc on a dremel, and the hammer gently hammering down the squared file... Worked perfect!

Nice! Just be careful.. the file can break easily.

Probably a good idea to use a piece of wood or something between the hammer & file so you aren't hitting 2 hardened surfaces against each other

Have done square holes by drilling a little oversize and actually filing square with a square file. Had 3 type 262 VW’s ‘64, ‘65’ and a ‘66 with the big back window. They could carry a ton over rough trails. Miss them!

I’m trying to put a 3/8 inch drive whole in my stubby wrenches to move the work 3inches a way like a starter bolt under a manifold then get a long extension on it and turn it with a ratchet up top. Basically an extended closed ended crows foot. I can buy them for $60 a piece or turn a whole cheap wrench set into them and always be able to have them

I have to make 1/4" holes in 1/8" Aluminum, but it's on the van walls (big Step Van) .. A ect broach for that is like $260 :( ... My plan is to buy a proper broach and hammer it though a 17/64" pre-dill. I wonder if a square file would worK like thus free had on the van walls: .. MUCH cheaper!!

@@ryanlowther6447 ...which makes it 1 drill bit too many, taking you twice the amount of time to do the same job. This is even more pertinent if you're doing a lot of holes. And considering the third drill bit was for deburring, even that was a completely unnecessary step as he was turning that round hole into a square one.

$70 from Harbor Freight, and more or less expensive than that from Amazon. Lots of budget china specials you can get by with until you find a nice quality used one(if that's what you're holding out for).

I’m fairly experienced, and I have a reasonable toolkit, but I Don’t Own An Arbour Press, and yes I do know what that is, and I have used one, but I have never had the justification to buy one for the few times I have needed it, also I’m usually working on site, and it’s not practical to carry one in my vehicle, I also know what Broaching a Hole means, but this title is very misleading Gents, be straightforward about what you’re actually doing - Julie

Yeah, how bout I not subscribe. I've been a journeyman machinist for years. From tool and die to power plant outages. I've also had formal college training on machine shop and manufacturing. So you never want to use any file in this manner or for prying! Have you ever seen a file explode and pop like candy. Don't teach people this cause its not o.k. especially if someone looses an eye.

I’m usually not a fan of safety patrol in comments.. But, you are so right on this one. Files are intentionally non-ductile and when over stressed tend to shatter and scatter. This was a bozo technique that could easily get someone hurt.

What? There must be more efficient and practical way in doing it. You use like 4 different tools just to get a rectangle hole. I think it is dumb.
