I would like to thank you for your positivity with each and every one of your videos. I run an MMA gym, but specialize in striking where my co-instructor teaches groundwork. Obviously I know basics of grappling, but I am still trying to learn so I can expand my knowledge and give my students what they deserve. Unfortunately in my area, I have only been met with BJJ gyms that roll with me and nothing more. No instructions, no drills, no jokes, just submission after submission. Your teaching style and personality motivates me to not give up searching for a good instructor and to continue trying to learn the art. Thank you

I've posted this before, but I am a big fan of mental reps. My BJJ progressed so much (relatively speaking) , even training very infrequently - simply because I would spend a lot of time visualizing a technique. I would visualize every aspect of a specific move, and understand it at a level that I could teach it back to someone else in a highly detailed way. Once you can do that in your head, it is really easy to implement that in rolling.

My wife is a white belt and just recently got motivated to train consistently and is nearly 2 months in (she has been training off and on for about 2 years) and one of the things we do now is we rep the techniques we learned in class to help her retain what we learned and help me execute the techniques smoother/easier (I'm a new blue belt). When I train early in the morning with people who just roll, I've been focusing on one technique per position to help me get better and force me to learn how to make it work when people know what to expect. I feel like I am reacting faster and transitioning a lot better as I'm not stuck thinking about what to do, just how to get there. Thanks for the videos and training inspiration!

We do a couple of techniques that we drill but then we open to the active drilling where we can for example choose what sweep we want to go for and then reset. After that we roll or ask what the other person wants to work on and help each other out.

Hey quick question I've been watching your videos for a little while now, and i was seeing how your dealing with this pandemic and having to social distance yourself from other people? there is no more live training at this point. I've been doing Jujitsu for about 3 months now at Binda jujitsu in Massachusetts and i was wondering if you had found away around it? Are coach has us doing muscle memory techniques and more and more people keep dropping out. Is there anything you would suggest?

Oh what a life o mine. The warriors path i walk. Oh what a great life o mine. Jiu jitsu has taken over my mind and my heart. Grappling has become my souls expression. Oh what a great life o mine. The more i roll the more i notice im rolling with myself, im fighting myself, testing my mind, body and spirit, in service to myself. Testing my will power, the fire within my heart with adversity. Every lesson feels like a dry old tree placed onto my hearts fire. Oh what a great life o mine. The warriors path i walk. Oh what a great life o mine. I find everything i do is to feed this passion o mine. This passion of mine is awakened my dna, has connected me to my ancestors. I feel a guiding wind, my ancestors looking down on me watching the fire that i enherite. I feel blessed to walk this path o mine. I walk the warrior's path, and its given me my soul. Oh what a great life o mine.

Hey chewy, I’m a 17 year old, 5”11 and 160lbs. I’m trying to gain muscle but I don’t have a lot of time between bjj, wrestling, school, study and a social life. Should I be more focused in the gym lifting weights or am I ok sticking with training and just eating more?

Hey Chewy! I love your videos, they've definitely helped me. I started a month ago. I do GI and no GI. In no GI, I can submit more than i get submitted against people who have trained for over a year. But with GI I get absolutely obliterated. There's so much I'm unaware of in GI. Is there anything I can do to keep myself motivated and positive?

Hey Chew, love your vids, I find them really educational! I'm in it for my second month but it's kinda starting to get to me. It feels like I'm doing zero progress, everyone is better in my gym. I know how certain positions/submissions should look and try to get to them, that I should always pressure, but even if I get there my partners always know how to counter or defend. When I then try to do something else out of it there is always something wrong and i get immediately choked out, swept or they give me a triangle, kimura, D'arce you name it. Today I got guillotined like 8 times and it's the first time I got really frustrated. Feels like there is nothing I can do at all. Even if I just try to defend they always pass and when i defend with the frames and halfguard the crossfaces and forearm chokes are mangling my neck again and again (swallowing is painful for the last 3 weeks). I have lanky build, am the lightest in the gym and there are a lot of strong and big guys in there so I know that's part of it (with my 75kg I make just a toy for them) and the kind of similarly built guys are just much better. I don't ever back down from any challenge or skip a round and trying to grind it out, try more approaches, like you say "embrace the suck". I'm always absolutely exhausted barely able to move the next day which is great and I love that feeling, but man it's just like I'm running against a wall atm. Maybe I'm missing some key concepts here, maybe I need to watch more vids to learn on my own, maybe it's just the nature of it and there is nothing to be done right now.. i don't really know but it's the first time I got really pissed at how un-fucking-bearably effortlessly is everybody kicking my ass.

Yo. Haven’t trained bjj in a few years and was hoping to get back into it before this COVID business hit. I gave up for a few reasons but it was mainly due to being diagnosed with arthritis in both of my big toes. The pain I experience if either of my toes is knocked slightly is excruciating. So my question is, what’s your thoughts on someone training with wrestling shoes? I’ve never seen anyone train with them before but its the only way I can get back into bjj. Cheers.

hey chewy. I'm a new 14 yo learning bjj and I tried to concentrate while my coach is giving techniques. But I can't remember the techniques I should do while doing the techniques with my training partner and ends up my training partner explaining to me over and over again and I don't want that to happen. I'm wondering if everybody is the same with me and how to deal with it so I could concentrate when the coach is giving the techniques.

You will learn how to learn eventually, just keep showing up. I think there is a baseline that you need to reach before you can retain the majority of a new technique. I'm a blue belt, and I might learn 100% of the details of a technique I've been shown 10 times before, drill it and be 90% correct, and then when i try to do it live, I only get 60% of it right. It's like learning a language, if you don't know the alphabet or vocabulary, memorizing a sentence will only stick to your brain for so long. A lot of times a coach will teach a "simple" technique like a sweep, and it is like "starting in butterfly guard, get these grips, position your body this way, move your opponent over here, and then bridge and lift your hook, as he lands on his back, slide your knees here and gather your base." Well if you have to "think" about how to get into butterfly guard, it's hard to visualize all the other stuff you need to do because you can't even picture yourself in the starting position. So now you need to remember what he said, and figure out how to tell your body what to do. Basically be patient, and leave your ego behind.

I've been training since January of this year. I've been calling it 6 months experience because of the COVID lockdown. During rolling with other whitebelts I beat everyone of them including a guy that is about to get promoted to blue belt. My one and only submission I use is the armbar from every position except bottom side control. I get a lot of shit for only using an armbar. I know other submissions of course, I just seem to find the armbar often. My question is, should I be focusing on hitting other subs or should I keep just armbarring people?
@FR-ty5vn
@FR-ty5vn 4 жыл бұрын
Austin Smith Chewy will have the correct answer if he gets to this one, but imho I suspect the Armbar won’t work with everyone & you’ll need to expand your repitoire - try it on a big, strong brown belt...
@Shinbusan
@Shinbusan 4 жыл бұрын
Chewie once told about it I belive, that blue belt is when you have some short number of techniques, which work for you, and purple belt is when you expand your spectrum of techniques. So for a white belt it is fine to be good with few ones and getting an expert with them. Still, if you want to be better, you must expand your game. I am novice by the way, so do not take my words seriously - I just say how I understood Chewie.
@FR-ty5vn

Chris Studzinski Grey Sphere yeah, I’m a 2-stripe blue - I recall him describing blue belt as sampling from a buffet - keep trying different things and see what fits into your game. My only point was that having 1 submission is great for a while, but then we need to branch out.

start in the posture or position and find ways to get in the targeted position. and get the concepts of the position or technique. like if i am focusing on spider and spider lasso i need to think what exactly make the spider work and what is killing it? what is a spider and lasso hook and how does it break posture? then when i roll i get the position and try out my theory. also i like to record my rolls so i can refer to it afterwards. and it is hilarious yet cringey to see my earlier rolls compared to now knowing what i know now

Hey chewy and fans, I’m fairly new to the channel and I was just wondering if you think I should give Jiu-Jitsu another try. I went to an mma gym last year with a buddy that offered Jiu Jitsu after my boxing gym shut down. Let’s just say I HATED every minute of training and did not enjoy the class one bit. ( I went to about 20 classes and the gym was an hour and a half drive so you can’t say I didn’t give it a try.) The friend I was going with was a spaz and was not fun to roll with, a lot of the people were not very polite (not all of them of course) but the gym honestly just had a bit of a douchey vibe to it. It didn’t come naturally to me at all and I was terrible. And the coach was very impatient and kind of rude. I recently found a gym that’s a little closer to home and I’ve heard good reviews and it’s a Nova Uniao affiliate and seems to be pretty much a full on Jiu jitsu gym and not an mma gym. What do you guys think? Have any of you had similar experiences and do you think I should give Jiu Jitsu another shot? Thanks everyone.

Why is no one commenting on her training partner not wanting to drill? Too bad if you only like to roll, training should benefit both participants, so split your time between rolling and drilling.
