My slave cylinder just went. So called RAC, they couldn’t get a tow truck to where I was so the patrol guy did this to get it to the garage. I’ve driven a VW camper from north Devon to bath and Bristol to south Devon in a caddy doing the same. But didn’t want to risk it in my lovely new (ish) van, better if he brakes it and has to pay rather than me. Actually, he did a lovely job, minimised the strain on the starter with judicious use of slopes and rev matching.

I had to do that a number of times when I was in “the trade” thirty years ago. One memorable journey in a Marcos kit car I recovered from Newcastle to the garage in Sunderland. A trip of about eleven miles. I only had to come to a complete halt once. Gear matching came in handy a few years later when I started driving heavies with non synchro boxes. Great channel. I love your warts and all style. Keep it up. PS I got my hands dirty today fitting new lower susp arms, a driveshaft boot and a brake pipe to my sons car in preparation for its MOT later this month 😀

I have used this technique with my wife and son, going home with my old 1969 Volvo 144 from a autoshow. When i met her i once tied up exhaustsystem with shoelaces, -25 degrees celsius and 20km to next house in Lappland Sweden, she thinks im mac.gyver when it comes to mending and cars, where i grew up, everyone (many atleast) learned this technique to drive without clutch. Good sharing

Damnit, that was gonna be MY joke! :-D Had to do that on my brother's FIAT 124 Sport - the cable snapped. The only problem was when we got caught at traffic lights - which sadly changed at the last minute and didn't quite give us the room to crawl up to the light in first or blow through it on the amber. The starter wasn't happy trying to move the car and start the engine at the same time - but it managed.

Used to deliver takeaways many years ago as student using a Renault 5 van, the clutch cable went and the owner of the takeaway said get it back, and talked me through it - aged 20 I thought yeah I can do it. I did and like you say easy going up, but I was bloody awful coming down still I got it back - u made it look easy ! 🤪

Studying up on how to drive my car to repair shop. Last drive in May over course of 3 hours my clutch pedal went from "looser than normal" to "stuck in floor" That night fled toward home, last stop sign before driveway just BARELY shifted in to 1st and rolled into my driveway, been parked ever since.

Had to do it several times......last time thankfully over 20 years ago. Cable snapped, bank holiday in Derbyshire. Worst was it wouldn't start in gear, very high mileage diesel. Soooo had to start it, rev it, use syncro of 2nd to get moving, drop revs and into first. Got home and no damage.....well 2nd still had syncro lol.

Done this a few times myself to get a customers car back to worshop. However it should be pointed out that if you have a accident you are classed as knowingly not being in full control of the vehicle and insurance is void as vehicle should be uplift or towed. Police in UK will also frown upon you if you are doing this.

On race cars you use the clutch for starting & stopping and just shift without the clutch. We used to grind off every other tooth on the synchros & turn them into racing transmissions but modern race transmissions are just sweet. Speed shifting has been around forever. Only time I use the clutch on my motorcycle is for starting & stopping otherwise quick blip throttle & shift. If you do it right you will never hear the blip. :D

Ask anyone who is a time served mechanic about the potential damage this could do. The Strain it will put on your battery your starter motor your crank..... not to mention over straining the springs and the dual mass. I have done this years ago myself when my clutch went. If you're stuck somewhere you can just take the risk and hope nothing breaks. I fully understand that probably a lot of people have done it. To take a customer's car and use it to demonstrate this problem is unreal.

If you rev match perfectly then there is no ware on the gearbox whatsoever. It's only when you force the lever hard when you may ware the synromesh. If you are slightly off then the baulk rings will not let the gears engauge until the speeds match. Lots of truck drivers do not use the clutch once on the move because it actually makes it easier to match the revs. They get to know the vehicle so well that the gears just fall into place every time.
