I had my first lesson yesterday (3 hours) and the first hour I was on a busy hill road at 3.30pm (school traffic & work traffic) I was sh*tying bricks, in the first 20 minutes I had to stop & start but when I was starting it was a hill start, I was told that I couldn’t go to any quite roads due to the time, I was really stressed but I got through it & completed a U-turn, hillstart, parallel parking & getting into the 2nd gear, if it wasn’t for your videos I would’ve been stuck so much I’d probably end up quitting but thanks to you I knew what to do 😁

I just lifted the clutch and it was moving by itself. This is all good but I have come from a petrol car where I had to find the bite and add gas. Also this new car had a hill assist mode where it stopped the car for me.. This is all well and good but I didn't enjoy the experience. I can't explain it but it felt really weird and "fake" like I wasn't in control of the car compared to my other instructors petrol car. Yes and no, diesel cars do accelerate more only with the clutch but on a hill you will need to press the gas and depending on the situation you need to also press the gas pedal (if you need move on quickly for example). On even terrain and without any sort of hurry sure, you can move off only with the clutch (but start to accelerate after of course)
@unimagin2ble

I speak as a mechanic 4:00 how to ruin clutch and release bearing. I would say to avoid. Changing gear at 2000 rpm in some situations could be wrong, low revs to stay in torque in the next gear. Safe shifts are around 2500/3000 rpm. Putting on the brakes in every situation is just a bad habit, it doesn't make sense, I don't know why people do it. Especially if the car is on the flat there is no point in pulling the handbrake, putting it in first gear is a good habit, just move forward (on the flat). Then, when the handbrake is needed it never works because you use it for everything except where it is needed, uphills, downhills, uphill starts. Did you apply the handbrake even while moving? Absurd, I would say.

As said before, making a video teaching people how to drive a manual car, and then telling them to sit at the bite point like this for so long for absolutely no good reason, is going to cost them money when their clutch goes in a year. Why not just dip the clutch again while you wait? literally 70 seconds in this video from you finding bite to taking the handbrake off

I saw someone the other day at a hill riding their clutch at the red lights. He was on the bite for about 30 seconds straight! I had the handbrake on and my car wasn't in gear. When the lights changed, I got went into 1st, got the revs to 2k, lifted the clutch, handbrake down and went. No clutch overheating and funnily enough I pulled away faster than the other person. I'm not sure why some instructors teach the method of holding the car on the bite for a while and with no "gas" (and rarely using the handbrake at hills). My driving instructor taught using the handbrake at almost every stop and it almost entirely prevents rolling back and stalling and you aren't trying to get the bite with one foot on the footbrake and the other trying to find the bite (with no gas).
@ElderlyAnteater
@ElderlyAnteater 11 ай бұрын
@@Xenon777_ I learnt the way you did too - my only issue is that using the handbrake even on flat ground or downhill just felt silly unless I was waiting for a while. @@ElderlyAnteater Yeah, I don’t use the handbrake when the road is level unless I’m going to be stoped for ages or it’s a hill, etc. I use the handbrake most of the time. I learned to drive in a 1.4 petrol which would allow me to get the bite without “gas” but I still always added gas anyway and used the handbrake. Sad but true , manual transmission is going to be ban by 2030 . All the scap yards will be stocked up with manual cars . All electric cars are auto . I drove a manual car for 16 years . Lots of fun when its a Jdm with loud muffler like I had .
