I use cruise control when going down and depending on my weight on the load. If load is heavy I set cruise control lower (15 under speed limit or more. Lighter loads I set 10 under speed limit. (All depending on the incline) I know that when going down hill at a set speed my engine brakes kick in automatically when my truck speeds up more then 5mph from the set speed. Truck will not go more then 5mph. I also try looking ahead of traffic and lower my cruise control when I need to. I try not to use the service brake and switching so many times with the jake brakes when going down hill. If anyone disagrees or has concerns pls let me know what you think.

I have a few questions, 1) what rpms do u want to go down a mountain? 2) can u use cruise control going up and down? and 3) what's the best way to brake?
@christiankoehne37187 жыл бұрын
1) th same rpm in the same gear you climbed the mountain 2) yes you can use cruise control, if you get too fast the retarder/engine brake slowes you down 3) brake, stop breaking, brake again. so the breaks wont overheat
@josephmcgahee73026 жыл бұрын
Rock Crystal going down a mountain, no more then 1500rpm. 1400-1500 is ideal. 2. You can but cruise control will push your truck 3-5 mph faster then you want it to. Why would you want to use it uphill. Most hills slow down ur truck anyway depending on your weight. Cc is not going to keep it at a certain speed going up because of the incline and weight of your truck. Cruise control is mostly good for long stretches of road like backroads and maybe freeways.3 engine brake is the best way. It saves ur brake pads and u have more brake control.

Hi . nice video. I am a new driver. Thanks for this video it helps a lot. I have a question about handling big rig in a curve, in what speed is safe for a loaded trailer going to a sharp curve in a 80 speed limit road highway or whenever there is curve. Thank you
@CoryJDraper Жыл бұрын
If you are a newer driver, just get in the slow lane and follow another semi driver, or if you are clear, I'd slow down to 55mph and see how road looks far down the road. If it's the exact same curve for 1 or 2 miles, just keep your speed the same and relax. Feel the steering wheel and if your truck is leaning. Sometimes wind can really make you nervous, icy roads too. The more you drive, you'll know what speed is safe at all curves you encounter. The weight of your load really determines your speed too. I think month after month, and mile after mile, you''ll learn what speed is best for all curves you encounter. Take it easy and be safe out there...

@robertross85654 жыл бұрын
@@Swara96 Buy an automatic. Manual transmissions are now in the minority on highway rigs. They are being phased out because automatics are safer, result in less fatigue, and can be operated by less skilled drivers. Since most truckers are in the fifties, the only way to attract new drivers is by making driving easier. Automatics have come a long way and can shift better than the best trucker. Forgot to mention that automatics get better fuel mileage as well.

Here the quarry we load at is at the top of a winding road. They (the company and also the quarry has posted a sign) telling us to not use our jakes coming down because residents complain about noise. Personally I care more about my safety, and for the most part have been using the service brake only. The speed limit is 40 and 45 mph. There are spots that are steeper than others and you fly down hill. I drive for a company, the truck is under powered, with 650,000 miles, and the jake hardly works anyway, so mainly I just stab at the brakes but still feel I'm using them too much. I am always at 80,000 lbs going down. Seriously I wonder how these people have the nerve to think truckers would care about their problem with noise.

Residents on a truck route should be required to contribute to a fund to have a sound barrier built, or have their home sound treated, if they don't want the noise.

Maybe you're right. Also smokers should be required to do their smoking inside a container that cleans their contamination out of the air until their breath is cleaned from it. If they want to walk freely, they should be required to wear a reverse gas mask, which contains all of whatever they prefer to smoke. All at their own expense.
@primalnightmare95276 жыл бұрын
Dee Zaster it’s not the truckers complaining about the noise. It’s all of them people who like to mess with their electronic devices while driving mainly complaining. Some parts of Alabama where I live. People are complaining about our air horns because they say it startles them. Alabama state trooper was behind a car next to me. I seen a person in their POV right in front of the state trooper texting on their phone and I hit the air horn. Their window was half way down. I watch that person jump, put both hands on the steering wheel, and lose their phone out the window. That person got up to speed and the state trooper gave me a thumbs up then pulled that person all in a matter of two minutes.

Engine brakes is basically using the compression of the engine to slow you down, especially down hills. It's similar to downshifting your normal car or truck from 4th to 3rd, 5th to 4th, etc. It's a safe way to control your semi while using normal foot brake (service) too...
@JM3jUiCe Жыл бұрын
@@CoryJDraper thank you for replying to my post. I don’t mean to make it sound so complicated…but we’re practicing on both 10speed manual and automatic. The instructors haven’t showed us how to downshift in the automatic yet. so, in an automatic, is it okay for when I go down a hill, to keep my foot off the gas and service brake, to let my tractor coast or slow down on its own and come to a slow roll? I know the rule here in PA is, if I go up a hill in say, 6th gear I should go down the hill in 5th. Do I HAVE to down shift in an automatic or does it do the shifting on its own?
