I've watched about a dozen of your vids. I think you're a super young man. Here's a thought: it seems as though dealing with personnel is perhaps the major hassle (as with these jagoffs). You might consider including some of the interactions you have with yard check-ins et al. No doubt there are some very difficult peeps with which you have to contend. Love how you keep from getting extremely angry...quality many of us don't have.

Great video Alex! I remember driving to Idaho Falls, ID for school. The snow was coming down, all the tractors were using lower gear as needed, my pickup was in the left lane no problem. Fast forward 2 weeks, I went to see Jackson Hole, come to find out, that road was only 2 lanes. I was driving in the middle!! Other note, the engine brake (used to be called a JAKE BRAKE) using the transmission engaged to the engine to slow down the tractor, so you don't burn up your brake pads. As for the % grade signs, they tell you how steep it is. Higher the number, higher the grade you climb and decend. Wait till you knock out 11 or 14%, that is nuts. If you have seen those runaway ramps on the downhill, those are for drivers that can't stop because of one reason or the other. Ok, down off my soapbox.

Well, you certainly went down Cabbage Patch faster than I ever did, but then my company was too cheap to put Jake brakes in our trucks. Still, Cabbage is the easiest pass through the Cascades, so don't get complacent. If you end up going back over Snoqualmie or Donner, prepare yourself for some REAL mountains. And, if you end up having to hang iron to get over, please practice putting your chains on BEFORE you hit the pass. Sitting on the side of the road in a 34° wet rain/snow storm trying to figure out how tire chains work will be a MISERABLE experience.

@@preppertrucker5736 While jakes help, aren’t to be relied on. I’ve had them fail twice, being grossed at 130k I was already going slow enough before I even started down the pass. First truck I drove for about 4 years had no jakes, and I live in mountainous western states. Went over cabbage, 4th of July, vail and others with that truck. I was taught to not rely on the jakes, especially on these newer trucks that aren’t mechanical engines.
@garyr7027

@@preppertrucker5736 not really, I did donner and cabbage with no Jake fully loaded several times. You check those breaks before you go down, make sure they're adjusted correctly and choose the right gear at the right speed according to your weight and it's not a big issue... unless you rush it, then you could be screwed. Typical 80k is not a big deal on a 6% grade.

Good job Alex, trick to mountain driving, slow and steady, steady on the throttle, steady on the brakes, no harsh stopping , especially on snow and ice. If the roads are snow covered, limit the use of the Jake Brake.

I’ve driven all the western interstates mountains and a bunch on old US routes. Any can be dangerous if you don’t drive right, but the most challenging roads are in the Appalachian mountains of Ky, Va, and West Va coalfields. We used to gross 160,000 + on very steep and narrow mountain roads. Many temporary roads at strip mines were so steep that a road grader would have to push you up to the coal pit, then you come back off on your own. I’d heard about the western passes and when I left the coalfields to go over the road I found them all to be a piece of cake compared to my coal hauling days.

To save you some time, take your fist and hit the side wall of the trailer. You can hear if it's empty by the echo of the bang bouncing off the wall. It's tricky if it's only half loaded but the more you do it the easier to tell the sound of unloaded and full. You don't have to hit hard either. It saves a lot of time if you gotta search multiple trailers.

Can you go into Oregon without a PUC sticker now or do you still have to buy a trip permit, haven't been there in 10 years, just curious

If your not set up to go through Oregon it's not worth it. Deposit money and pay for miles driven on that trip. Last I knew. The only good thing is they raised the speed limit for trucks.

@@chriswiggins214 to an extent there are still parts of Interstate 5 and surrounding interstates in the state of Oregon that are still 55 mph for trucks and buses

Are truckers only allowed to stop at certain truck stops? I noticed Alex mentioned specifically having to stop at a Pilot. Do companies specify certain brands that you have to use?

We can go to any truck stop but our company card only allow us to get diesel at certain truck stop

@@branleyprevil3110 So, if you run out of fuel earlier it is essentially having to pay out of pocket because the company didn't calculate mileage vs fuel economy correctly? (I do not know much about trucking and have only done a few long road trips myself so excuse me if the question is asking something that is simple).

@@Reaper006 idk about the smaller company but the mega company have you location and information they know when the fuel is low so they give you a route to a truck stop and if you really need fuel, you can send a form messages letting them know you are in need of diesel and you are allow to spend 300 on diesel on the company card but they have to accept your request

At my company we can stop anywhere but I mainly use pilot truck stops to accumulate the reward points for free showers and other rewards.

Try not to burn your self out by staying out too long on the road. For example I stayed out once for 4 months on the road before I went home and I regret it, you’ll feel like shit. Try and take some long breaks when u go home 2-3 weeks atleast

And in Canada we’re on allowed to break for 2 seconds at a time. If you experience break fade or break loss from over breaking over them 2 seconds at hit someone you could be looking at 8 years jail for attempt of manslaughter. That’s why we have our jake and gears. Breaks are absolute last resort.

Cabbage Pass it's 6 miles of 6% downgrade ahead with 3 warning signs the last says final warning 6 miles 6% downgrade it can be dangerous if you are not paying attention and over using your brakes and many have lost their lives there especially at the curves which you should be at 55 mph so you did great good job trucker.
