How to Drive Down a Mountain in RV Automatic 🚍

New to Rving? 🚍 You may need to learn how to best adjust your rv when driving up or down a mountain in an automatic RV. We recently purchased the Coachmen Morada and went full-time as a family.
Our goal is to see the entire lower 48 states and check off the states as we go. That means we have to prepared for driving up or down a mountain in the rv rig. ⛰

The "Tow/haul" button is simply a button to cancel overdrive. This is perfect! I've also read from truckers that the best method to prevent brake fade is to brake somewhat significantly and then let go. Per example, when you reach 30mph, brake down to 25mph and then let it go...the coach will slowly gain speed (all while the brakes are cooling) then when you hit 30, brake again... and repeat basically. I've actually gotten in the habit of doing the same with my car on steep hills.

Also while descending, shift down 1 gear from what you ascended the hill. If you ascend in "D", descend in "D2".

Understand tow mode and how to use it. The Ford transmission will downshift when you are in tow mode and press the brake (and downshifting will not overrev the engine).

Brake, not break. You should not rely only on that tow mode. You needed to downshift to a lower gear and then maintain that speed, allowing the transmission to brake you. It amazes me that people are not taught this when the first received their driver license. Every type of vehicle has gears, use them when going down or even up a hill.

The transmission doesn’t brake you (if you don’t have a trans brake), when you shift into a lower gear the engine will rev higher allowing the additional engine rpm thus compression (with no throttle) will slow you down.

The coach is already revving at 4500RPM.. how much lower of a gear do you want exactly.......

That revving is pretty normal! We rented a Transit 350 campervan and were driving over Wolf Creek Pass, and the descent control kicked in and freaked me out!! I figured it was normal, and like you guys, tapped the brakes now and then to slow down the RPM. Great video!

Engine braking, I drove a lot of those U-haul box vans chevy and ford counter parts because we moved so much, love those Trition v10 sound. You pretty much get use to that.

Is it normal for the motor to rev out in lower gears?

Yes especially up hill or while towing. I baby mine by tapping the break and manually keeping the RPMs down.

Yes, ever see signs for no engine breaking? Signs a geared to 18 wheelers but reason why sign exist is because engine breaking is very loud. That sound is resistance being transferred to the engine increasing rpms but not increasing load on the engine. It's safe to engine break and most big rigs are designed for it.
