The idea of observing to decide if an indicator signal would benefit anyone else, and not indicating if your observations deem it not necessary, does rely on your observations being perfect - I usually prefer to indicate to benefit anyone that my observations may not have spotted or someone who will do the totally unexpected i.e. if I haven't seen them, or anticipated their actions, for whatever reason, but they at least have a chance of seeing me and the indicator signal tells them what I am about to do. The use of road position and brake lights as signals are a good point and well made. And many thanks for all these videos ... I feel my driving experience has benefited greatly since subscribing!

One of my learners came out with a brilliant comment a few days ago "if someone isn't from this area, my signal is helping them know which lane is which if they can't see the road markings".
@marklittler7845 жыл бұрын
Yeah really signs before filters should be there telling you in case the road markings are obscured by rush hour traffic.
@ashley_neal5 жыл бұрын
Road markings for me are one of the final things that tell you which position to be in. Looking past the junction at the layout is much more effective, but people are insistent on looking at the floor!

I think of all your videos I've seen so far (quite a few now) this one might be my favourite. Love the ideas about using position, speed and other actions as signals, not just think that signals = indicators. Brilliant explanation of the thought process in scenarios and the planning that's going on. Your commentary style is very different from my own, very sparing in choice of words - much for me to learn.

What would happen on a driving test if the examiner thought you should have signalled, but you thought there was no point (and you were right?) I feel like some examiners would expect signalling all the time, regardless, just because it's more of an "advanced" thing, if you know what I mean? Ie. On left hand only turns, my instructor said you don't need to for obvious reasons, but do it on your test to give the examiner no excuse...

Understanding signals at the side and front might not be visible or clearly visible to other road users because of their bad design or sunlight is important, most cars have the front indicator signal incorporated in the angled headlamp unit where the sky reflects on the glass
@marklittler7845 жыл бұрын
I don't hesitate to give arm signals turning right or changing lane because they're difficult for others to ignore and absolutely clear especially to your side.

I always felt like a dummy when signaling in the middle of the night with no one around, eventhough the road laws states that I should. I have already been trying to do what you do, observing whether a signal would help anyone or not. Once again learned something Ashley, thank you!

I blast the horn a few times when letting people out because it alerts everybody around me unless deaf or on their i pod, that I am upto something and any potential witnesses are looking in the right direction at the right time if anything goes wrong.
@peterthompson98543 жыл бұрын
So you talked about a couple of signals there where, I think, the meaning by popular understanding has changed from the Highway Code. The beeping of the horn is generally seen now as some sort of reprimand, I am very hesitant to use the horn, I’m guessing you get a fair few confused looks as you beep away. Flashing of the lights is generally understood as giving your right of way to someone. I agree with your point about care being needed with flashing lights. I don’t see anything wrong with a hand gesture, but you have to be aware that the ther driver could be using your action to take the decision that it’s safe to go. I also sometimes find that good road positioning is ignored by other drivers without a additional signal too. I generally signal more than you as I have less confidence in other road users.

I think the idea sounds good but in practice this level of driving requires a level of concentration that people who are preoccupied with other matters, had a long day at work, or are still sleepy, may not be able to muster. And it seems a lot of drivers don`t concentrate very much but they also don`t put on a signal, because "they don`t have to" and as a cyclist i nearly die at least a couple of time per week. It is useful to me for a driver to signal because I know what they are doing and can respond accordingly, but if they don`t make a habit of it, i feel, many don`t use signals at all even when needed. In an ideal world I would love to be able and see all other drivers use the signals with top notch situational awareness, but unfortunately I doubt this will happen until we get driver-less cars. As for the signal/don`t signal battle - i`ve had it both ways. I had someone almost pull out because i signalled a touch early before a junction as i was stopping on the left, but I have also had a driving instructor yell at me (he wasn`t my instructor for long) for using a right signal to move from left lane to right lane as there were obviously cars parked on the left, but he claimed that it was too close to a junction and someone might think i am somehow magically turning right from the left lane on one signal. Personally, i think and will continue to give a signal when changing direction, because cars do have blind spots, you do get tired and you can miss things. There is only one way to indicate what you will do to other road users and that`s to use the bloody indicator.
@halfrhovsquared Жыл бұрын
In reference to letting someone out. I don't flash or wave anyone on. I do attempt to make eye-contact. What I will also sometimes do if I think that there may be some confusion as to my intentions is to take my hands from the wheel and fold my arms. That way, the other person is in no doubt that I am not going to suddenly jump ahead.
@Horizon301.5 жыл бұрын
What would it be like with auto hold? Would you be allowed to use it? As a driver it’s so much simpler driving a manual with it, every time you stop, out the car in neutral then foot of all pedals, then to set off just put it in first and go. Essentially you never have to ever touch the parking brake button.

Hi Ashley, Just starting watching this video. Just thought I'd throw the question out to you... Referencing the scenario where you talk about putting an early signal on when going downhill in the wet with a lorry behind you (makes perfect sense), so that got me thinking, say you are in this same scenario and you are turning a second left on two very close together junctions. How would this play out / be assessed by examiner in the fact of a considerate and safe early signal for the lorry, though slightly misleading on not being intended for the first junction?
@ashley_neal5 жыл бұрын
Use your brake lights as the first signal. :)

The hazard thank you, I generally try to only flash them once as somebody could potenially misread it as a possible hazard if you leave them on too long, I think I've only used my hazards 3 times, once for an accident on a blind corner on the opposite side of the road (for a lorry approaching the opposite way with some pace, I clicked them on and flashed them and they flashed back), once for a dog that was running around on an A road (I wanted to help the dog but didn't want to be running around on a busy road so I pulled up with hazards on and rung the police while I was on the phone a woman from a animal charity pulled off and told me she'd picked the dog up and I told the police the dog was safe) and once for a cow that randomly appeared from a field and started trotting down the road.
