bottom has 3 switches not two, you have your deadman stop as well as your main switch, you also have your third switch which is the yellow plate at the back, that third plate is for if you're in a tight/heavy pedestrian traffic it disables all controls

On the lifts I use their is a trigger switch on the under side of the controller,do you know what it’s used for?

The trigger finger is only used when the forklift has an accessory such as clamps or a reach then it is used and it cancels out the tilt mechanism. Otherwise it’s obsolete.

Nothing is lighting up when I turn it to first position or all the way to the right. Any ideas on what I'm missing?

Check the red emergency cut off it may be pressed down, it should be popped out or off.
