There are some good drummers out there and also some good musicians, but both in one is not often seen, except if you believe that there is something like a technical musician (who get to where he is by practicing and memorizing all those grooves - ohh and speed, they love speed). Well, maybe it is just me but I cannot feel those "musicians" - with drummers, Buddy Rich comes to mind as a prime example. Maybe someone can give me an example where Buddy is grooving in a free form (meaning no imitation)?

That's the thing about drums. Everyone sounds different! Even if they play the same notes. No blame. There is a great story about Bonham playing a child's kit. He still sounded like Bonham. As Stephen said somewhere we don't need another Steve Gadd. Everyone should be themselves.

Hey Stephen, nice lesson. My name is Jason, I'm an advanced drummer down "yonda" in Vero Beach Florida. I play with local peeps and work full time in a church as the house drumma. That being said, I just wanna commend you on "s'plaining" the Purdie shuffle very well . Just like Mr. Purdie, I'm a playa not a teach'a. Wow, I mean I cut my teeth on some Bernard Purdie, Porcaro, Gadd and Copeland and it's nice to see these grooves still being "s'plained" today. Thanks bro. Jason.

Just want to say this is the best break down of this shuffle on the on the internet (at least on KZbin). I learned this shuffle on my own (self taught drummer), and this explaination is step for step how I had to figure the sticking is just triplets. I tell tou these kids today don't realize how lucky they are to have access to learn whatever, whether musically, building or creating something.

From listening to Bernard Purdie (way back in 1968)... and thx to you, to actually learning how to play his great groove myself. :-) IMO, you are indeed the best teacher I've seen on the internet! I am a piano and guitar player. I've had 2 sets of drums, but proficiency never arrived. My Dad always told me to stop drumming! It sunk in I guess. I still ended up teaching a couple of the drummers I've played with over the last 50 years how to play the latest greatest groove moves for drums. I had to learn them. Now I have to learn what you are offering here cause I sure love Bernard and this groove is so stellar. Was/is tough, and I have spent a bit of time focusing and practicing. I'm close and like you said, "you'll get it if you stay with me". THX so much for sharing your effort and expertise. Wow. May you gather as much as you give out and want in this musical world and beyond, brother Stephen! :-) 5 thumbs up! -Steve (sending a personal note @ your website email address)

I got a chance to sit down and actually have a drink with Bernard at Jazz Alley in Seattle some years ago...He is nothin but fun to talk to and he stuck me as an unforgettable individual. All the best to you Bernard...and this is a great video!!!!...You might reach out to bass players and drummers alike to reinforce the importance of both Bass and drums working the groove TOGETHER..its a shared responsibility...I heard a guy tell me and I always pass this along to any bassist. As a bassist YOU MUST THINK TIME AND WORK THE GROVE WITH THE DRUMMER'S BASS DRUM..Drummers lay out your bass pedal so the bassist can follow that bass drum..ABOVE ALL, BASS PLAYERS THINK LIKE A DRUMMER. Far to many bassists think slapping is the be all and the end all of bass playing...How wrong you are.

Thankyou. This is definitely the best explanation of the Purdie Shuffle. You have broken it down into very understandable steps. I started slow and spent about a fortnight on the first 4 steps. Im up to step 6. Still taking it very slow as I want to get the dynamics correct. Every time I try to speed up , the unaccented note after the backbeat isnt quiet enough. So I'm keeping it slow for now. But seriously... Thank you very much for posting this video and for explaining this groove so clearly.

Great video. The way you broke this down made it incredibly easy to pick this beat up! The hardest part of nailing it for me is doing the loud backbeat followed by the ghost note. When the kick hat and snare are all chugging along, I default to hitting two open strokes on the snare instead of an open followed by a ghost. More practice!

This was extremely helpful. This video gives a new perspective: instead of trying to make the right and left hand independent from each other (as in many jazz grooves), they actually cooperate and make a pattern together, even though it's in different parts of the drum. Such a simple but effective technique and my guess is it derives from African percussions where you often play a constant pattern with your hands but with different accents and on different percussions. What do you think?

Hi Stephen. First off, I loved you lesson at Drumeo covering the 10 fills every drummer must know. I love the Motown fill and it was great to learn it from your teaching. I've grown to love the shuffle and even though you are covering the Purdie shuffle the sticking just clicked from your demonstration. I can now understand the sticking for Rosanna and Fool in the Rain. My untrained ears struggled picking it up. At times I was even putting Fool in straight eighths. So thank you very much for this gem that I just discovered. I'm going to go practice now.

Half time shuffle here I come! It's taken so many outside forces to make this one kind of achievable too. Right hand independence for the triplet groove and just some triplet rudiments like the single stroke four and ratamacue to actually hear the beat. Btw, try the ratamacue on 3 leading into the downbeat; sounds sick!

So this is basically the 4/4 version of the Purdie shuffle. In the video he is playing the shuffle in 6/8 which gives it a completely different feel. I think that's why everyone is saying that it sounds a little different. This is essentially the fool in the rain beat minus the hi hat opening.

Great lesson. Purdie would raise his hats on the Ah of sometimes all the "ahs" Paccaro's version was so clean, and fast. Of all the drummers I've heard use it, I really like how Bonham does in "Fool in the rain" The lift on the ah of 1, the fills, and when he goes to 1/4 note trips on the ride. I get the feeling Bonham never broke it down like anyone else. Feels like he heard it, played it, and gave it it's own flavor. Babylon Sisters (Steely Dan) is Purdie doing his best work IMO anyway. Brilliant beat!

great video, stephen. breaks down the steps really nicely. a quick note. you are playing more of a triple feel in 4 - broken down it would be like bass ghost hat hat ghost hat snare ghost hat hat ghost hat. or bass 23456 snare 23456. you should listen to purdie do it again, cuz he usually plays it more like a triple feel in 6 - bass ghost hat hat ghost hat hat ghost hat snare ghost hat hat ghost hat hat ghost hat. or bass 23456789 snare23456789. to me, this is the purdie shuffle. not sure if that made sense at all, but it will be clear if you watch the purdie video.

Thank you! I had lot of fun with this Purdie-shuffle. Some how it turned out to be like BoDiddley-rhythm in the end with my base drum-beat. Keep on swinging man!

That was truly the best half time shuffle breakdown I have ever seen. I can't wait to get that down. The video of Bernard Purdy is very entertaining. He must have been amazing in clinics. You are right about the instruction but it sure is fun to watch!

R(L)RR(L)R[BOTH]. The right is constantly playing LET-TRI and the left is on the PLE. It is just didapus. The left is playing ghost notes except on 3.

Glad it was clear my friend! And it is a hard one to master...the fundamentals of it aren’t that complex. It’s just hard to make it sit in the pocket.
