How To Dry Mount Artwork (Without Air Bubbles!)

In this video we show you how to quickly and easily dry mount a poster or print using self adhesive board. Following these steps minimises the risk of air pockets. It gives a smooth finish and prevents ripples.

Cut a piece of self adhesive board around 100mm larger than the aluminium print. If you're adding a window mount, increase the border so it's wide enough to stick the mount onto.
Peel back first 50mm of release paper. Centre the print over the board, on top of the release paper. Press the leading edge onto the adhesive smoothing it with a clean microfibre cloth. Work your way up in stages, smoothing with the microfibre cloth as you go.
Don't remove the final section of the release paper. Lay it back down over the print and use a brayer roller to get a really good bond. You can also run it through a roller laminator at this stage.
The mounted print should be left to cure for 24 hours. Trim the edges and then it's ready to frame. This technique is suited for low value and reproduceable artwork.

Hello, i have a vacuum press but i dont know how to use it. I tried the process you show in the video but sometimes i get air bubbles after a couple of days (i use an adhesive foam board which is acid free) so i tried to add other adhesives (like carperters glue or 3M spray glue) but i also get the same air bubbles after a couple of days. What do you think i migh be doing wrong? what other type of glue can i use if im planning to glue to it a MDF sheet or a foam board? Great video By the way!!!

Hi, I’m printing off an A2 size print and want to put it inside just a regular black A2 frame. I know that overtime the print can warp/buckle with humidity etc. How can I prevent this without dry mounting? Like ideally I just want to place the print inside the frame and put the backing board thing up against it

Hi, there's no way of guaranteeing that warping/cockling won't occur unfortunately, that's why we recommend dry mounting where possible. You could try using acrylic instead of glass as it offers better UV protection.

So im buying some original movie poster's. 27x40 and there being put in metal frames. The company offers to do dry mounting for free but should i? Is it recommended for originals or is it just better for the poster to be framed like normal?

Hi, dry mounting original posters can decrease their value so we wouldn't recommend doing this. For conservation purposes it is preferable to put a small mount around the artwork so it can be hinged with tape. Alternatively, if it is framed in a normal way (up close to the glass), then ensure it is kept away from damp or humid areas. Hope this helps!
