This was timely! Just yesterday I tore my bathroom flooring out. I had big plans to start, which involved moving a wall and switching from just a shower to a shower/tub combo. But during demo I found a lot of water damage in the subfloor and base of framing, so I'm going to be doing a lot more (including drywall, which wasn't part of this initial project). You're a lifesaver!

@@s.b5605 Taking out and replacing the problem areas of subfloor (maybe all of it... the room is pretty small). Same with the wall. It's not a load bearing wall, and some of it is going to be moved anyway, so taking out the framing and replacing. If only a section of subfloor needs to come out, you can adjust the saw blade (so you don't damage joists or floor below) and just take out the damaged area, rather than replace everything needlessly.

@swparsons
@swparsons 7 ай бұрын
I think it doesn’t have to be even. Drywall sits on top of flange. Then tile is run down over drywall to the shower pan. If it was even it might cause problems laying the tile. (If it wasn’t perfect).

Such a small area to tape, but lots to learn - thanks for all the instruction. The best drywallers I know work at night, and depend on a light shining along the surface to show any irregularities and it works great. I use a small battery lamp while I am drywalling and it owrks well. I had an issue with my drywallers, and I tried to show him during the day an issue I found on a wall, and he told me "I don't care if you saw it at night". He was just trying to save money but at the time I didn't realize the technique and didn't know how to call him on it.

I really like the corner tool, I've gotten pretty good at it and haven't had cracks, but I also don't try to dry everything out to put a second and third coat within an hour of each other, so maybe it dried too fast for you. I do quite a bit of pressure and it doesn't leave a ton of mud.

I bought my first house last year that was poorly renovated, once I moved in a noticed things that I didn’t notice at first, my shower floor is uneven, not sure if it’s just the tile or a bigger issue, there’s a gap all the way around between my shower wall and shower floor, there was no exhaust fan or ventilation at all and the paint started peeling due to the moisture and I honestly think just by looking at the wall underneath the paint, that it might not be the right type of drywall for a bathroom. I’m going to replace all the drywall for sure but any tips on what I should do about the shower?

FYI blisters in your tape come from inadequate mud or no mud under that section of tape. I've been finishing for almost 20 years and I never have to put mud over tape after wiping it down for it not to blister. A tip if you do have a blister cut it out with your razor knife then hit it with quickset and you're back in business.

You are great over all. Here's some Real pro tips. NEVER EVER coat anything until Your hot mud is COMPLETLY dry>>>>. it will look great for maybe a week max IF you actually could finish it. Then the hot mud would shrink and pull back ruining you effort and speed. Hot mud dries from INSIDE out. A chemical process. Regular mud dries from outside in. Two totally diff processes. No pro uses a corner trowel. Leaves a rounded unfinished angle. Maybe fine for a Apartment Rental or dyi. Also realize this is NOT a drywall channel. lol Also look into corner roller for your tape. No way anyone can match the performance and accuracy of precision and application designed tools by hand. Thats like saying you can out cut a table saw with a jig saw....Not bashing just stating facts. Carry on you got millions waiting for you to make another great vid!

drywall is cheaper and easier. Since he is doing a wall panel system instead of tile, there is no need for the added expense.

Why are you not using fiba fuse in order not to worry about blisters and more coverings?

I am just not a fan of that product. if you wet your paper tape it never blisters.

Is there a down side on using the fiber mesh tape compared to paper tape?
@Badenhawk
@Badenhawk 2 жыл бұрын
Paper tape is much cheaper.
@RJFerret
@RJFerret 2 жыл бұрын
Also fiber mesh is thicker, so needs more fill to cover, depending on the joint (non-tapered butt joints) it can result in a bump in the wall where the joint is. Another channel that has gone over it is Vancouver Carpenter, who does a ton of drywall vids. I forget the other downside of mesh tape aside from nominal cost difference.

@@RJFerret I think really the only upside is that you can apply it directly to the wall since it's adhesive, you don't have to add mud first and then tape and mud....but honestly now that I've practiced with paper tape I don't see the need for the mesh.

what is the tape for exactly? You covered everything with the cement first.
@robertgiresi9515
@robertgiresi9515 2 жыл бұрын
The tape is to prevent cracks. It's paper tape, so there's no adhesive on it, that's why he mudded first before applying the tape. You have to mud both sides and get both sides wet to prevent blistering. He has many other videos where he explains this in detail.
@tay13666
@tay13666 2 жыл бұрын
The tape is what physically ties the two pieces of drywall together at a joint. The mud acts like a glue for the tape. Without the tape you have two pieces of drywall with some crumbly dried drywall mud filling the gap between them. The first time it receives any kind of shock (like someone bumping into the wall) the mud will crack or crumble.

I've only used a Roto Zip a few times. I have to ask, WHY Completly screw the board in then Cut out the fan, doesn't the board flop at least 1/2 " and wouldn't that leave slack in your screwed area around the fan? 😃😃😃😃, I use a Pan to Mud, Never could handle a Hawk and YES I catch mud in the Pan as easy as u do.
