Using readily available Rit dye I show how I dyed my cars carpets with great results! Note that I have no affiliation with any products on here but they DO work!

I was thinking of doing this by building a tub and soaking it in the hot dye bath. Thanks Dan !

Interesting! That may be easier!

I had been thinking about this for some time. I wanted to do the floors in my suburban. I foolishly used a carpet cleaner that wasn’t very good & it left my floorboards spotty. Now I have to find a light grey to dye them back. Thank u so much for this video. Now I have a bit more faith in myself to give it a try.

Go for it! That’s a great scenario to start with a carpet that is stained already; I would say darker the better.

Thank you for sharing your experience here. I have a 2004 chevy colorado with 409k miles ive owned since highschool and i have completely removed the original molded carpet for the first time. I plan to do your procedure here. The only difference is I'm going to use an old devilbiss paint gun for the application. Ill have the water mixture as hot as possible. I want to ensure the best possible results because this truck is a lot more than just a truck to me. I want to keep it original and as pristene as i can muster.

Great job!! As a kid, we used to dye our T-shirts in colors to make up the soccer uniforms. Color T-shirts where more expensive than plain whites and dye was cheap.

thanks for sharing your experience. I'm about to do this with my '91 montero to restore the carpets back to a consistent blue color. I was going back and forth deciding whether to use the RIT fabric dye or the Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric spray - I have both on hand but I think I'm going to go with the RIT and use the Spray on the plastic trim pieces that I won't be wrapping with vinyl material.

Hi David Thank you for watching and for sharing your plans for your Montero. I used to own a 91 Montero and it was an amazing off-road machine. I wished I still had it!

Thanks for this! I ordered custom mats that came in and were a much lighter grey color than I liked but I like the mats so I was going to darken them with this same color. I noticed that the bottle says to add a teaspoon of dish soap. Should I do this if I’m following the spray bottle method you used?
@handydand3 ай бұрын
I would follow the recommendations on the bottle and spray away! Thanks for watching!

Hey, great work. How much water did you use per bottle of Rit? I am doing a set of 5 regular size mats: 2 fronts and 3 smalls for the back. Is 1 bottle enough? Original colour is dark gray. Thanks, I do appreciate your input.
@handydand Жыл бұрын
I followed the directions on the bottle as far as mix goes. I believe I used two bottles for my project. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Say, if I wanted to do this with the inside of the entire vehicle carpet, how would I dry it then? Would It air dry or keep the windows up? How long do you think it would take, could it be walked on while drying?
@handydand5 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! As the dye is liquid, the carpet will be wet. How fast it dries depends on the weather (if outside). If inside warm temperature and a fan can hasten drying. I wouldn’t walk on it until it dries. Hope that helps!

Nice work! Wondering if any transfer happens if they get wet?
@handydand2 жыл бұрын
None yet! I got them wet and wiped with paper towels and no issues.

Would it be easier to get a trash can and pour hot water in it and the dye? Then just soak the carpets for a time and let it dry
@handydand Жыл бұрын
Hi Jim I don’t know? I found this method worked pretty well and heat is a key for the dye setting into the rug. Maybe a large vat of heated dye would work, although there would be a great deal of waste due to the volume needed. Thanks for watching and for your thoughts!

Can this be done on the actual car carpet (under the mats) if im able to remove it?
@handydand Жыл бұрын
Yes it can! It’s a lot of work and remember hot dye is required, however it does dye the carpet well.
@Gyatt_Clips7 ай бұрын
How many coats did you do?, does it matter if the mixed dye cools while applying?
@handydand7 ай бұрын
I kept coating the carpet until I used it all up. (Multiple coats while It was still hot). You want to keep it hot as that is how it bonds well. Thanks for watching!
