What is your advice on how to dye an entire ostrich feather boa? Im nervous because it’s not an individual plume. Is there a different process?

Im trying to learn how to bleach feathers white ,or fade the pigments of natural feathers ... and I have used a Clorox bleaching pen, but it only made the lighter colors a shade lighter. Someone suggested ahair dye so I tried a darker hair dye on black and browns tones in are you allowed to dye a white bleached already. Very little success it didn't hardly turn the white turkey feather a fewshades darker so I'm scrat ching my head here. Any suggestions on the right track would be most helpful and appreciated .

Justin Nesahkluah use hair bleach and developer. You can buy it at most salon supply stores or high percentage peroxide. Some taxidermists will sell it to the public. Wear gloves.

Now, what about bleaching feathers? I can't seem to find any videos concerning bleaching techniques on already dyed feathers...I ordered a big pack of light pastel colored ones and got bright spot-on PINK pink feathers... so just trying to see if I can bleach them and work with it or if I should just buy something different (I have a costume to make with them that have a deadline and I know it won't be enough time to return and exchange what I got currently)
@JustinMLF4 жыл бұрын
Ayla123Hemora bleaching is more difficult. You have to use a peroxide process similar to bleaching your hair and it often will not remove all dye or natural color. I would just exchange them for the right color if possible.

You can check out the book "Dyeing and Bleaching Natural Fly Materials" by A.K. Best. He has a good bleaching technique for feathers. Basically you use hair bleach or high concentration hydrogen peroxide.

what was the point of the vinegar?
@wizardmagic1028810 жыл бұрын
You add it to the dye mixture. About 1/2 cup of vinegar per pound of material.

Do know if you read the procedure on a box of Rit dye, Sometimes you add vinegar, sometimes salt to get better penetration on diff materials. Know the surfactant makes the water wetter. Some of the chemicals in new clothing act like water proofing. I like a little TSP. or a little Dawn.

These are acid dyes. They require some kind of as to fix the color in the material.
@JustinMLF4 жыл бұрын
Ray Pajar the process won’t work without some sort of acid. I have successfully used sulfuric acid, ascorbic acid and vinegar. Of all those vinegar is cheap and safe and the smell goes alway completely.

i have goose in the 1 yard format. can i hang them on a clothing line and air dry ? do you have to rinse them after the dye?
@Garysopinion6 жыл бұрын
Looks like no one is answering you. I would take one dried dyed feather and rinse it off to see if the dye stuck. Like if you dye a shirt or redye blue jeans. Wash separately the first time. Look up the word mordant.
@JustinMLF4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Yes you can hang dry them and yes, you absolutely have to rinse them.

how can i dye yellow feathers to green fearhers?
@b3poj2d27 жыл бұрын
dip them in blue, yellow and blue make green.
@JustinMLF4 жыл бұрын
Dye is transparent, so the colors will layer and combine. Yellow + Blue = green or you can use green dye.

Hi I have some white feathered Angel's Wings to dye - would you recommend using the same method for these or not? Tks Grace~Shanti F.
@JustinMLF4 жыл бұрын
Grace Shanti F if you could go through this process without physically damaging the mechanism holding the wings together, it would work. Otherwise, you could use spray paint.

Can I dye my feathers using beetroot juice I can't buy those dye my mum 'll kill me
@JustinMLF4 жыл бұрын
Benitta Josphine try it. It most likely won’t be permanent. You can try food coloring with vinegar. Use a process like the video and it should produce ok results.
