Great question! We would recommend the Drab plumes, but its also up to your price point. Femina plumes would be the high end, and Damaged plumes would be the low end. Figuring out what size plumes you need would depend on the diameter of the lamp tree. For instance, the smallest of the Drabs varies from 4-8inches, the next size up is 9-12inches, then 13-16inches, and then 17in and up. So if using 4-8in plumes, your lamp tree could have a 8 to 16inch diameter. We sell drabs in packages of 12 or 25 pieces as well as 1/4 lb. Thanks! featherplace.com/feather-types/ostrich/drabs.html

Which is best for making a hand held fan?

That's a great question and it depends on what you want from your fan! Think about the width of your open fan - do you want something that is 1ft or 3ft wide? We make our fans with the drabs, floss, and femina feathers. As Katie mentions, the most luxurious and flowy, will come from the femina. Femina will create the widest open fan, and give the biggest length of feathers. Floss gives fans a very whimsical look, and are not as thick and long as the femina. Drabs look beautiful with their more "structured" look than femina and floss, though still will have a flow to them. Drab feathers also come in a range of sizes, which can be helpful if you are making a smaller fan. Lastly, your staves will help you decide as well. Your feathers should extend past the staves and that will help determine what you need. Fun! It depends on how big Animal will be - that will determine length of ostrich you need and how much. You would be using the flue of the ostrich, and a good option for that might be purchasing our Ostrich Drab 17" and up. Hi Vanessa. It is very little difficult to make dyed feathers turn "white". Especially once they have a red base dye applied. In order to get ostrich feathers white is a pretty timely, and involved process of bleaching and degrading depending on how naturally dark the feather is to start. You stand the risk of damaging, or burning the feathers. Just like when you bleach hair, it's very difficult to remove dark colors to lighten without drying out or damaging the hair follicles. But with feathers, they are much more sensitive to standard hair bleaching products. Especially Ostrich feathers! How many white feathers are you wanting?
