Its good to see someone waxing traps the right way with just melted wax. I see a lot of videos where they melt the wax on top of water or on the water that traps were boiled in. That does not do a good job. I used to wax but I finally went to the speed dip. It took a while for me to be convinced to use speed dip. I thought the gasoline that is used to mix the dip would be smelled by the animals. A old trapper finally convinced me to try it. He did all his fox and racoon traps too with the speed dip and he had no problem scaring animals. I did mainly beaver,mink, otter and muskrat. The dip worked great on the traps. When done right the dip will hold up for a long time. I didn't have to do them every year. I never went back to the time consuming boiling and waxing. Make sure to dip traps a few months ahead to give gas smell time to go away.

Have you tried Full Metal Jacket speed dip? It leaves a rock hard coat on your trap but has no scent once dry and no build up. It smooths action like wax does but it's a lot better than wax at protecting traps.i dip my snares, snaps, and conibears. I just take a bit of sandpaper to where the trigger is. I used to use wax but the full metal is much better IMO.

My traps have been cleaned and have a coat of rust, ill dye them in a couple days and then wax them. I bought 10lbs. of wax to dip them like you did in the video, but I watched another video where the guy melted one lb. of wax in water, the wax floats on the water, when a cold trap goes in the water it takes wax down with it, when the trap comes up to temperature it will melt the wax off and the wax will float back on top. Lift trap slowly out of the water and the wax will adhere to the trap, and it's ready to hang & dry.

One point of safety: When waxing, before you lift the traps out of the pot with the molten wax dripping off, turn off the flame. This will prevent the possibility of having wax drip onto the open flame, causing a flare up that can ignite the traps and the entire pot of molten wax. GREAT VIDEO!

To save money on wax, fill pot with water , add wax , wax floats on water. Heat water and wax melts and floats on top. Put trap in water for 1 minute and pull trap out slowly like you're hydro dipping . Works great and saves money

Urban Hunterz It's all personal preference. For me, I really like a Bridger trap but they do require some modification. A duke is a cost effective trap as well, some people swear by them. I just prefer the quality and function of a Bridger trap.

Ok, new to this want to know the key answer I have not found yet. Why do you have to treat “new traps”? Won’t they just work fine with the original packing grease? Reason I am asking, I have seen guys set traps and make catches right out of the packages.
@ANPennsylvania
@ANPennsylvania 9 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Krahenbill I prefer to not use paint because of the potential smell of the VOC's. Logwood dying and waxing is a traditional method taught to me, so that is what I use. Others use different methods as well, it's what you prefer.

Do not use water. Used plain wax . Make sure all water is dried off traps before putting in the wax. Make sure wax is hot enough or you will end up with a very thick coat of wax that will flake and chip off.

I used vinegar and I was wondering how long I should soak it in water and baking soda to neutralize it
@ANPennsylvania
@ANPennsylvania 9 жыл бұрын
+ZapZ you can use a 30:70 ratio of vinegar:water to soak the traps in to clean excess rust off, scrape with a wire brush then baking soda to neutralize. If you are just looking to speed up the surface rust try the same solution in s spray bottle then neutralize. The vinegar can do damage to the trap if left in too long.

Dipped 6 traps in kbl to try quick dip. Gas smell was still bad after a month of outdoor air. Removed kbl with boiling wax. Took it mostly off for the most part and ruined 5 lbs of wax. Do not recommend quick dip except on water traps (maybe).

what does the dye/wax do?
@ANPennsylvania
@ANPennsylvania 9 жыл бұрын
Kkurtz21 The dye seals the pores of the steel and adheres to the rust to keep them lasting longer. Some say it doesn't matter, but I like to do it for the tradition of it. The wax speeds up the function of the trap, and also keeps them scent free.

Jeff DeBord adding die color to the trap is similar to painting them..it prevents your investment from rusting through and in the process kills human scent in the hot water...the wax also helps protect the trap and kinda seal the trap to be scent free...it also speeds em up real fast. Hope this helps

ghetomedc when paint dipping you don't want it to thick, if you do make sure you work your trap springs/dogs/levers to make sure they are fast when dried. Also, you might want to tape your conibear triggers and just hit w spraypaint. I had to do some filing work on the triggers holding paint.
