This Chevy big block has been on Nick's dyno once before.. but that was before it was involved in a wreck that totalled the car it was powering. Now it is back for a once-over ... and while it is in the shop, Nick wants to show everyone what is entailed in strapping one of these beasts to the dyno for testing.

I seem to be addicted to your channel Nick I watched the episode where you're testing the Yenko Camaro and now I'm watching this one And I can't tell you how much I have learned even though I'm a 73-year-old gearhead Did not know there was such a thing as a holley 3 barrel and I read up on it and read it they existed but they're very rare And here I learn a common sense and simple way of testing whether a cylinder is dead or not. You should call yourself the professor of motors!

You know, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a step by step on setting up an engine on a dyno - like, ever (and I'm old, like almost Nick-old :-) ). Now that I've seen it, there's nothing in it that is unexpected - it was just VERY cool of George and Nick to think of presenting the whole thing! Thanks much guys, I enjoyed this one very much! -Ed on the Ridge

Just recently found your channel and it is great. I am an Chevy truck guy and was glad to see a 427 truck motor on the Dyno. Friend put on in his 86 3/4ton 4x4 on 40 inch tires and what a beast it was. He bought it brand new and blew the 350 in a year. I always wondered what the power out put was. You make great videos of old school power in detail, not into all the flashy shows out today.

My ex brother in law purchased a 1990 Chevy 454SS pickup in 1995 for a song. It had been in a wreck and we tore it apart, right down to the frame. Rebuilding a 5 year old truck was pretty simple. Parts were readily available and Edelbrock had come out with some great parts for the 454. He replaced the 3 speed TH400 with a Rock crusher 4 speed. The 3.73 rear gears still worked great, but he put in an air locker anyway. He never got a chance to put it on a Dino, but everyone guessed at Rear wheel hp around 400 (and that was without the 150hp nitrous shot). Great, fun and addictive truck for smoking up the rear tires. Thanks for another great video post. Keep up the great work and best of luck 🍀

No plugs, no dizzy, no hold down, wires, no parts, no joke. I'd be charging extra for the hastle. That's rediculous what the Gary's did to that motor. They think 427's grow on trees? I'd be mortally ashamed to have taken that motor to someone other than for a full teardown and build right, which is what they should have done the first time. Surprised the valves survived with those pistons out 180°. Kudos to Nick for not saying all the negative comments that you gotta know were on his mind.

Unfortunately motors don't come with zippers.. or elastic bands like your drawers.. you can't just slip them on and off. Gary should have hosed it off before he ever brought it to you. IT'S a good Monday when Nick has been hard at it. and i can sit and drink my coffee with the roar of somebody's big block burning some hydro carbons. ahh life is good.

For points type distributor, line #1 on TDC (compression), drop the distributor in then: Rotate distributor (in the direction of rotation) until you pass over the lobe FOR #1, then go against rotation, until the points barely open. You’ll be within 3 or 4 degrees of correct timing

Hey Nick love your you tube, I was looking at the tear down on the 67 440 that was nice, had a 440 TNT in a 1969 new yorker, the car had about 1000 miles in 2014 when I sold it, great engine

To clarify, cranking pressure means little in relation to compression ratio. It has much more to do with cam timing and overlap. For example a 14 to 1 compression ratio engine can be mechanically perfect and still have 120 PSI cranking pressure if it has a very aggressive camshaft.

The owner doesn't realize the time money meter is running as you have to work on his engine. Lol.

@@robertkohen3994 You miss the cost of the machine. Sitting there doing nothing, it still costs money (fixed costs). Running, it costs money (variable costs). And that's before human labor.

Drop Dizzy in regardless of where it engages oil pump drive, turn Dizzy until desired plug terminal is pointing where you want it remove cap, turn engine to line up rotor, then mark and remove dizzy. Rotate engine to #1 TDC, reinstall Dizzy to mark and lock down.

Just put up a mirror. It might be a lot less expensive to see the dyno monitor. Thanks again Nick!

Diagnosed the bad wires on my truck that way, set spray bottle to misting, sprayed my wires, they were old, dried out and arcing everywhere once i misted Nick, mount a screen facing the Engine room, in top left corner of window(from inside control room perspective), IN the control room, you don't want too far from glass, glare could be a factor, I know you stated once you tried to mount a monitor in the engine room and the vibration killed it.

You could put a mirror on the wall where you mentioned putting another screen. Reflect the screen on the desk. Reflection will be backward but I’m guessing you’d deal with that just fine. Save a few $$$. Very interesting. I’d want you as my boss. Positive attitude goes a long way with employees. 🤙

Great episode. I give gm credit for starter mounting bolts vs mopar or ford. Them headers are a lot easier on the Dyno 😂

Chevy starter mounting isn’t something to admire. You never have to shim Ford or Mopar starters to keep from tearing up the ring gear, they just work. Nothing sounds worse than an imcorrectly shimmed Chevrolet starter.
