PA big woods mountain public land is the hardest hunting there is imo. I started hunting in the 80s at twelve years old in that environment. I stopped hunting completely by 94. It was a horrible experience overall. It literally made me hate deer hunting. Not knowing much or having very little information resources back then didn’t help. I started deer hunting private land in the early 2000 and never looked back. Much respect to the guys that are successful. I remember hunting entire seasons in the 80s and never seeing a single deer. If someone shot a spike it was cause for celebration. Everyone referred to mountain bucks as acorn racks. The monster six points and half racks were only found on farmland back then lol. Not to mention without cellphones or gps back then you were risking your life if you ventured too far out into the big timber.

I have a silly question. What are the big woods considered in Pennsylvania? The Allegheny forest area?

Not a silly question! Any place that doesn't have much agriculture. Basically where you hunt deer in areas of a lot of timber! The Allegheny National Forest would be an example of this, as well as the rest of the PA Wilds.

I'm old, , no longer hunt . this is all new to me. It seams almost like cheating compared to what we did Hard to get lost, that's what I did best.
