I think getting a good result in the most efficient way possible, without unnecessary or convoluted steps and techniques, is obviously superior. In that respect I obviously prefer your approach to GW’s. It’s why Marco Frisoni is my favorite painter and instructor.

Another great video Andy. And much needed!! I have watched the "official" videos as well as a few others. All require multiple steps, many paints (some using multiple paint ranges) and all would take weeks and weeks to paint a single squadren. This way means I can have a painted unit on the table ready for battle in a weekend!!

My exact point pal. Glad it’s coming across.

I've always liked GW's and they've kept the same method since the Duncan days. Is it longer? yes. Does it require more paints? yes. Aside from the fact they want you to buy more paints they're also teaching you how to base, shade, layer and highlight.
@MediocreHobbies8 ай бұрын
But with people having large piles of unpainted models I think it’s so important to learn to get nice clean FAST results.

Thanks for another great video Andy! It has actually been a long time since I watched a GW painting tutorial, so I watched the video, and two things I came away with are, first, you pace your videos far better! The GW video was super fast paced and didn't really give me a chance to appreciate the painting technique before moving onto the next color. Second, yes, it is odd that they disregard the contrast paint. I use both depending on what I'm painting, but this miniature just screams for contrast, and will be painted much quicker and to the same standard than using traditional techniques.

The vast majority of "how to paint" articles in the old White Dwarf magazines from the 90s and early 2000s are a lot better than the painting tutorials GW has been releasing for the past decade. From the explanations to the number of colours used, they show you how to paint miniatures quickly and efficiently. Whenever a WD magazine did publish a more in-depth painting tutorial, the article was usually either for a character or from a hobbyist whose army caught the eye of GW staff members at Games Day, etc. There were numerous instances where a hobbyist had their fully painted army featured. These particular articles would have a couple of paragraphs they provided a simplified and direct explanation on how they painted the colour scheme. The photographs that accompanied these articles helped provide a visual for imagining the painting process. Then again, the miniatures from the days of legend weren't jam-packed full of detail compared to the models from the past decade or so, so painting them was a lot easier. Painting tutorials such as yours are the 21st Century equivalent of a by-gone era: handful of colours, simple explanations, etc. :)

I agree, I only really skip through their video to see what color paint they used so that I can gauge off of that. The reality of painting is so different to what they put in their videos, and it really seems like it is just to maximize how many paints you have to buy from them.

What is the difference between contrast and base paints? Can contrast be diluted with water or do you need a specific medium?
@MediocreHobbies4 ай бұрын
Think of contrast paints as paint that is heavily thinned with medium. It flows easier than regular paint. I use it because it's quicker to paint base coats with, you can thin it down more with water or there is specific contrast medium as well.

Since you would usually thin the regular mephiston before applying it anyway, you can just grab the mephiston air as it is already thinned

@doctorstormchaser9 ай бұрын
Great story background, and simple scheme - definitely more efficient than the GW scheme. I suspect they may be catering to 'classic style' crowd (of which I do admit i'm one of), rather than doing contrast methods. I liked the siegebreaker story, as I've been trying to decide story wise why I'm only wanting to use the newer models (never got into old fantasy as it had too much of an elite-ism where I was collecting and gaming at the time, and dont want to use the old sculpts to be honest!), so this is excellent. Tempted to have a Baratheon style army with stag heraldry and maybe yellow and black colourations (but thats still to be confirmed obviously!) Great work as always!
@MediocreHobbies8 ай бұрын
Very nice pal. Love that idea. Maybe look at using some cities of sigmar for the new sculpts.
@Onk3lM09 ай бұрын
The idea behind GW's painting videos is that they've created a formula anyone can follow. It's always base > wash > layer > highlight. There are no "complicated" techniques like blending or freehanding. This makes their tutorials accessible to as many people as possible. And of course they use like 20 different paints to paint a single mini so that people buy more of their paints.
@MediocreHobbies8 ай бұрын
Very true!
@tirandeshibaraki7439 ай бұрын
Honestly, doesn't GW overcomplicate the paintjobs during the explainations pretty often? I think a relatively easy, fast paintjob is better for large blocks of infantry. Not a big fan of the foot knights though; they feel very unBrettonian. Honestly, I could see myself picking up some Bretonnians but likely just knights. They'd go well with my single unmounted Damsel for display purposes me thinks. That and every knight having his own heraldry will be... interesting to say the least. Kinda annoyed with GW atm though, they made a mistake and I'm the one who got screwed over. So no Necrotect or Ushabti for a while which sucks; kinda hoping they stock soon but... meh, doubt they will and I don't feel inclined to pay 100 bucks for the failcast version of the Necrotect when there's a superior metal one 'waiting' to be reprinted. I'm also thinking about a BSB for the Tomb Kings since their basic units fall apart at a moment's notice but the new mini isn't great imho while the old metal is darn expensive. x_x
@MediocreHobbies8 ай бұрын
I got my hands on the new bsb and it’s really nice. Sorry you got screwed over.

@@MediocreHobbies The Pegasus BSB? I don't remember which other ones Bret gets tbh; I have been looking around for some bits to make a buddy a Duke on Hippogryph but all the Demigryph bits are overpriced as heck atm. XD As for getting screwed over by GW; it is what it is, I ordered my Ushabti at Wayland Games afterward and I'll skip using a Necrotect for the time being. Speaking of BSBs, I got the metal Tomb Kings BSB + mounted BSB off of the secondary market for the made to order price a couple of days back. Going to have to install some lead sheets in the base to keep them from tipping over they're so heavy. XD

@MediocreHobbies8 ай бұрын

@raidengzt9 ай бұрын
The biggest issue ive had with games workshop tutorials is that theyre largely counter productive. They always use an excessive ammount of paints to get new people into the hobby to buy lots of paint but then they end up with a retention issue as new painters often cant pull off the same teidious edge highlights and layers that GW do on their tutorials, while more experienced painters generally will use 3rd party products and a bigger number of techniques like glazing, oil washes, wet blending and airbrushing that games workshop just doesnt support in their videos, so their way of doing things unfortunately doesnt really have an audience, at least one thats sustainable in the long term.
