I think it's helpful to know the mnemonic, but it's easier to just memorize EADGBE, for one thing it's just 6 things, or if you know the two outer strings are E, then you really only need to memorize 4. The problem with Eddy Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddy is that you'll keep using it. So if I point to the D string, in your head you'll recite (Eddy ate dynamite...) Oh, that's a D string. Kind of easier to just memorize it.
@kaistruik78784 жыл бұрын
What if you just associate every word to a string, then someone asks you where the D is and you'll know your D is a dynamite 🤣
@gusgrizzel83974 жыл бұрын
Vincent Lok I agree. It's the same thing with memorizing where notes are on the staff. FACE...so one has to count the spaces and say that in their head. I think it's easier to just become familiar with where they are.

I know this video was five years ago, but man. I had two different guitar teachers in my life, they were both amazing, but they never taught me this. I legit could never memorize the different notes, I just memorized which lines on the music correlated to which note. I could look a music sheet with a simple song and play it back with little practice, but could not tell you which letter notes I was playing. (My teacher thought it was impressive). This video changes that for me, thank you.

This guy is stupid and did not take the time to understand music. most instruments including the guitar have a e# and b# but a # is just a way to say one key up like on piano for example b# and c are the same key as are e# and f the same goes for flats if he wants ignore 2 notes thats fine but not acknowledging the existence of two notes it's a serious flaw in a musician.
@BlGGESTBROTHER5 жыл бұрын
@the random pineapple As i understand it a # is just a half semitone increment. So a half semitone above a b would be an f, not a b#. I think what you mean is that you can play b# and e# chords; which is very different than being able to play those notes.

Easter Bunny Gets Drunk At Easter Is the phrase I use to remember the strings I’ve never forgotten it
@davidjohnson56316 күн бұрын
Wow! Very helpful!!! Ive been making incremental progress on my gitbox by just noodling around on it,with the faith and observation that if I just followed my interest,Id eventually “get it”. Memorizing patterns first and all that music theory FIRST just hasnt appealed to me more than just playing around in the neck. Still,I know that I eventually will get interested in “the boring stuff”, but always wanna stay anchored in my basic attraction to the guitar. So,with that…I searched for videos on “learning the guitar neck by ear”… After going thru a number of them ,I hit on one of your’s that was just focused on that(I forgot the vid)….and it was encouraging to know that I was on the right track…and neednt trouble myself with anything initially but intuition and ear…and basic observation. You put it in other ways,but also referred to this preliminary video. So,I checked it out……and it was immensely helpful. Not only in the mechanics of knowing where notes are on the strings and neck,but supporting the encouraging info and feeling that comes from knowing those basic matters of the neck,notes,strings,octaves,etc,etc. It really fell into place on another basic level in that way….. Thanks so much for the explains! The simpler,the better! I think that the scales and note wheels and all that stuff is great at some point,but right now…Im stoked(and have a lot to play with and discover) with just knowing what this vid of your’s gave out to me today. Happy 2025!!! x,D

Well... This teaches you how to find notes on a fretboard. However, it doesn't teach you a better method to memorize it other than "just memorize it". If you were to find say a c# on any given string you can only count the frets with this method. Great explanation but the title is misleading.

KEYS are just Pitch dude...All I know is...if the Music sheet or singer say...Play this shit in C# minor...I ma pretend the 4th fret is the NUT as if it was like in Amin...So Im just going to make the C# minor bar chord shape then lift my pinky to play the E note. Then it's all down hill from there. Then I ma harmonic minor , melodic minor , or harmonic major it.. Im just thinking in INTERVALS after I locate the ROOT note. As in #4, 2. maj13 or whatever the heck modes/scales I can play from each tone center. If the singer still complains and threw a harmonica at me... Then a light bulb will go off in my head....Oh..okay..you want this shit to sound country??? Then I ma play E major pentatonic from the NUT as if is was at the 8th fret....i personally dont really give a fuck if you call it the key of Fb... becuase Im thinking in terms of INTERVALS and the TYPE of intervals from the Fb.lmao Then I ma go to the IV chord and play a whatever A major intervals. or whatever chord progession starting from the Fb maj lmao In other words...Let say from C maj/ A min...I see the E note as the III from the major count or V from the A minor count. I see notes as INTERVALS, now. Not so much letters anymore...They had to lable them something.. They could has easily label them WUVXYZ.lmao i know where all the notes are at on the fret board. its actaully from doing what he's teaching. Plus whatever else i learn. Im not beyound doing single string runs or riffs either. It actaully help me alot when i mix with other type of fretboard navigation. if you played a 7 string guitar. it;s even easier to see. The patterns repeats itself over and over again...Lets say the Low B sting is added... At the 5th fret would be exaclty the same as it would be at the NUT. or you can barr your finger across the 7th fret...E note ( A string).. It's samething as it would at the nut...just an octive higher.

A possible method to learning the notes on the fretboard is looking at power chords. As long as you know the notes on the 6th and 5th strings, you'll get a better handle on the notes on the fretboard. With power chords, you play the root note on either the 6th or 5th string and the higher pitched version is played two strings over from the initial string the root note is played. So if you play the power chord A starting on the sixth string, you'll know that two strings over (4th string) from the note A and two frets up towards the guitar bridge/sound hole (7th fret) is a higher sounding A. Now what you're left with is figuring out what the note is being played on the 7th fret of the 4th string which is E. From there, you can try to find that same combination utilizing power chords as the main structure across the entire neck. You'll learn that you'll have to find some of the notes further up the neck on the higher strings (2nd and 1st strings; B and e respectively). You can do this with just about any note with respect to the 6th and 5th strings. Hope it helps.

You must remember that he prefaces by letting you know that this is NOT about memorization but rather about association to assist you in being familiar with the respective notes of the frets. He does a very good job in this video by teaching a fundamental building block for beginners.

I Love playing but never comprehended why it works- I do believe You openned that door- look forward to more of your lessons, Sir- thnx ! I've been an ear playsr since 9yrs old- but you've sharpened & heightened my enthusiasm for learning what I've been playing & refired up my curiosity to nail down precisely what I'm playing & why it works so well. Maybe I'm able to actually learn this most enjoyable heartfelt " MUSIC " thing w clarity. Thnx, I honestly understood how it works so well. Can't wait to watch your video's- thanku ! music is an incredibly means of communication & I.am so greatful for your teaching video I just watched. Wow, THANX AGAIN ! YOU'VE BLESSED US ALL !

When I was taught the strings I was also given a 6-1 acronym.. was annoying for me to turn the order around once it got stuck like that. (but maybe I am just dimmer than most haha) Here is an acronym that will teach you the strings from 1-6 instead. Easter Bunnies Get Drunk At Easter Not hating on the Sage.. he is a great teacher.

You made me stop and think about how I know where all the notes are. I never really sat down and tried to memorize all the notes. Association is key. I learned chords, scales, intervals, the notes in each, and their relationship to each other, and how to play them. During this process knowing where they are on the fret board just happens.
