Hi Erich, I an 75 have played guitar for 60 years, 45 as a pro lead guitarist, I have used this method from very early on and found it the best possible way, I expanded the system by playing around chords in the music and extensions of those. Here is a laugh for you...Some goon once said to a friend that I was searching up and down the neck for the right note, (Yes they are out there) This method as you know gives good light and shade to our playing. Its very nice of you to freely share with others this important method. Well Done

A great lesson. Knowing music theory is great but it can be very confusing. Using this lesson and others like it can help you to, all of a sudden, understand what the theory is trying to 'teach' you. This lesson is almost teaching the theory without you realising it. Then when you do try to learn the theory it can all fall into place much easier. Techniques like this really helped me.

Great way to show how this work for getting the range of the neck options
@aa.mirezZ4 жыл бұрын
Another way to learn the notes and make accessing licks a lot quicker is to learn the notes of the guitar going down the 3rd 5th 7th and 9th frets. So third fret is going down on all six strings is GCFA#DG 5th is ADGCEA (also only one without sharps or flats) 7th is BEADF#B and 9th is C#F#BEG#C# those are easiest to distinguish because there is typically fret markers on the board or side of neck to show you your place. I practiced this for a week and it really works! You’re able to recall notes all across the board because you know that the spaces in between will either be a sharp/flat from the note before or after it. So on 3rd fret 6th string that’s a G so after it is a G# and before it is F#. So it becomes very easy to plug in the notes right away. And after awhile you start to see how the notes can be found all along the board in an octave or unison. This too helps for scales because you will know the next note based off of the notes you need to play in your key and not necessarily the pattern; this helps because it helps you learn how to formulate all scale forms and not just pentatonic. And of course, knowing the notes and how to find them will allow you to link your scales across the whole fretboard, and not locked in a box shape.

Anyone learning at begunner level. My one price advice is learn the pentatonic scale. It can be utilized in any type and style of music. Country, blues , rock and metal etc. In all keys. And for country music just move it 3 frets down. Example of key of "G" (index finger at 3rd fret) would be moved down 3 fret. Now it should be at 6th fret now. Just play pentatonic at that position and now ur in a country music feel while the band would still be in key of "G". This is my tip for all u beginners. This will help u a lot. Just practice as much as u can. And play with other band a lot. U will learn more that way from others. I play professionally and learned this all on in my own but would've been way ahead of someone had explained all this before. Plz reply and let me know if it helped any of u?

He's giving background so he can ensure you have the same foundation and understanding before building upon it with new concepts. If you're so familiar with these ideas that they are boring, why are you watching a video with the title, "How to Play ALL Over The Neck WITHOUT Knowing Theory"? For me, the background info was useful, with only a matter of months behind me in guitar, I expect I'm the intended audience. If you just want a list of the 5 common chord shapes in pentatonic, just google image search it. Don't insult the guy making the video for being thorough.

@s4lroachclip7 жыл бұрын
i would suggest instead of trying to avoid theory that new players learn the 5 positions of A minor pentatonic, once you have that you can start on any note and you will know the neck. Just about 90% of rock is using this scale. learn the first position and do it for a week then position two for a week then back to 1 and 2 one after the other for a week then 3, then 123, then 4 then 1234 then 5 then 12345, then 123454321 up and down, should be a 10 week study, and a little bit everyday beats skipping a day and trying to make up for it. I cant play long, les paul and back pain but i pick it up several times a day everyday. or you can do a 5 week study learn each position in 5 weeks but you do need to eventually be able to start on 1 and go to 5 and back

here's and idea, if you already know this stuff, or you think it's too long, too wordy, find another video. as guitar players we have to realize that not everyone's skill level is up to ours. so take what you can use and move on. there's no sense bitching about his lessons, let the man teach, and if you think you can teach it better, make your own video. keep doing what you do man, you're helping a lot of pickers.

Pick up your guitar and do this with me. Play the 5th fret of the low E string. That note is A. Now play the 7th fret of the D string. That is also A but in a higher octave. To make this simple, playing the same note in different octaves means playing it with a higher pitch (7th fret on D string) or lower pitch (5th fret on A string). Now play the A string open, no fretting just let it ring. Note that that is the same octave as the 5th fret on the E string. In non-string instruments you typically cant play the same note in the same octave in multiple positions. On the guitar you can. Thats all, dont think about it too hard because it isnt more complicated than that.

Why do people act like music theory is like a certificate you get after you take a piano lesson? This video isn't about "skipping over music theory" at all, is about getting yourself more familiar with the fretboard by it doesn't help you conjure up new melodies/changes/etc. music theory is why x sounds good in terms of a compositional perspective, not "guitar proficiency". This video is informative in a way but the title is misleading as hell

Kaz Matsui I like what you said
@imeldaberumen77787 жыл бұрын
Kaz Matsui you forgot the how. music theory explains why it sounds good and how the piece was composed. in a way it is misleading, but all he did was break down motiffs and repetition. Those two take a big part in improv theory. but i agree with you. everyone needs to stop taking short cuts and learn theory.

Imelda Berumen Not learning theory is not a short cut. Theory is really an option, not necessary. It's a good tool. The way he explains it is one way, but there are other approaches. If someone wants to learn theory they should. If they don't, they don't have to. They can know how it was composed in a different way than theory.

I leaned this "method" of soloing and playing by watching VHS tapes of Stevie and Clapton and after a while I started noticing patterns in where they would solo based on what the key was. I spent many MANY hours watching and playing to figure this out back when VHS was still a valid format. It changed everything for me and would've LOVED to have had your video as a resource back then. My advice to up and coming players or to anyone just craving more out of their playing is to learn this and understand it because it'll be a game changer for you

Ok..Thats good stuff 5 frets up except the B string is 4 frets up to the next likened note..Thanks I can learn this and move up and down the fretboard easier...

Was kind of expecting something smart. Not just the obvious, each string is tuned 5 frets lower than the last, except G at 4 frets. Just go 4-5 frets lower, anyone who knows guitar tuning knows that.

dude, I disagree, if you assume that this is all somebody knows, sure, but I've never learned technical theory, I just seem to have an ear for music and note patterns that sound good, and my friends who know theory constantly tell me "do you even know what you are doing right now? you are using advanced theory and don't even know it" I'm sure I'd benefit from learning more theory (mostly save me time writing songs! lol) but feeling out every notes over the years has helped me write unique music that sounds unlike a lot of other guitarist I hear out there. (though the irony here is I will never know JUST HOW unique they really are, not knowing music theory)

Sure. It was a generalizing and aggressive joke. Sorry. The only factual point was: Don't do the shortcuts.
