There are 8 ways to pronounce OUGH in English, so I understand why you have difficulties knowing the correct pronunciation of the 'OUGH' in words such as though, through, thought and thorough (which, by the way, are all different!)
In today's lesson I'm going to teach you how to pronounce all of these words clearly and accurately so that people understand you every time you use them.
I'm also going to teach you an EASY way of remembering the correct pronunciation of OUGH words. This is a technique that you can apply to English pronunciation in general, but it works particularly well for this type of confusing group of words.

I came looking for the same thing, being surprised they hadn’t been included too. There’s also dough (rhymes with though). Slough (which may rhyme with tough - cast of dead skin, or maybe with you - a muddy swamp, or then again maybe cow - a town in south east England. Bough and plough and drought (cow). Ought, nought, bought, brought, fought, sought (that rhyme with thought). Ahh the vagaries of the English language 🥴 It’s tough*, knowing that your mum will cuff* your ears, when play is rough* enough* to scuff* your shoes | ŭf As I doff* my hat to quaff* coffee* I cough* and spill it in the trough* | ŏf Hiccough (a little out on it’s own and, as an anglicised version of hiccup, going out of fashion as it’s origin was a misapprehension that the spasm was related to a genuine cough) rhymes with a kind of cross between cup and cuff, hiccup actually with cup| hi.kəp/hi.kʌp

How do you do Sir? Well, I´ve been playing with the words you gave to us jaja, with your permission, I hope this helps to my classmates, surely, the following phrases will have grammatical errors, but, anyway as you´ve said, the idea now is to remember the pronunciation. Please feel free to correct me since you are the one who knows, I´m only trying to help with this topic. 1. " THOUGHT " /θɔːt / As we know is the past tense of the verb "think", Professor Sir Greg said the pronunciation was / θɔːt / with the cute, long, back rounded vowel "ooo" /ɔː/ (To simplify and not confuse I will do all the transcriptions without the stress and without assimilation because of nearby sounds.) I will transcribe "just" into a weak form /ə/ for this example because I don't want to emphasize the word "just" since it has very little lexical meaning, furthermore, is quite the opposite, I want to emphasize the other sound. /ɔː/ We could remember "THOUGHT" pronunciation with this phrase: "This morning just before dawn I THOUGHT I saw my horse." We can see the "long o" sound /ɔː/ in many words, and even if you don't understand the complete transcription, you can try to identify the repetition of the sound /ɔː/ / ðɪs mɔːnɪŋ ʤəst bɪfɔː dɔːn aɪ θɔːt aɪ sɔː maɪ hɔːs / Did you see it? Remarking /ɔː/ sound: morning /mɔːnɪŋ/ - before /bɪfɔː/ - dawn /dɔːn/ - THOUGH /θɔːt/ - saw /sɔː/ - horse /hɔːs/ 2. "THOUGH and ALTHOUGH" /ðəʊ/ and /ɔːlðəʊ/ The second word "ALTHOUGH" is the first one but adding "oool" /ɔːl/ at the beginning. The sound /əʊ/ as Professor Sir Greg called it "the bad news sound". We can play with the phoneme /əʊ/ thinking of the Beatle Song "All my loving". (And now we must use the strong form for the pronoun "you" /juː/ since it is at final position, the important thing is to show how the sound /əʊ/ is repeating and so we can remember the accurate pronunciation.) Sir Paul begins the song saying: "Close your eyes and I´ll kiss you, tomorrow I´ll miss you... remember I'll always be true..." (/ɔː/ ...always so sweet Sir Paul), we can add "THOUGH" or "ALTHOUGH" in the middle of the phrase: "Close your eyes and I´ll kiss you, ALTHOUGH tomorrow I´ll miss you..." / kləʊs jər aɪz ən aɪl kɪs juː / ɔːlðəʊ təmɒrəʊ aɪl mɪs juː / Remarking /əʊ/ sound we can see: "Close ...ALTHOUGH tomorrow..." / kləʊs / ɔːlðəʊ təmɒrəʊ / 3. " THROUGH and THROUGHOUT" /θruː and θruːaʊt/ Professor Sir Greg said the pronunciation of the word "THROUGH" was /θruː/ with long vowel u /uː/, he called it "the lipstick sound", although I usually call this sound "the failed goal sound", as when Argentina fails a goal "uuu..." (grabbing your head.) We can use his great phrase: "I threw a shoe THROUGH the window" /aɪ θruː ə ʃuː θruː ðə wɪndəʊ/ As he said, "threw" and "through" sound alike but they have different meanings, or spelling, therefore, they are "homophones". We can again play with Beatles songs, I´m sure my classmates know their songs, for example in "Hey Jude" adding the words "THROUGH...you" at the beginning of the song: "THROUGH you... hey Jude you'll do, the movement you need is on your shoulder..." / θruː juː / heɪ ʤuːd juːl duː / ðə muːvmənt juː niːd ɪz ɒn jə ʃəʊldə/ Remarking /uː/ sound we can see: "THROUGH you Jude you'll do, movement you.." / θruː juː ʤuːd juːl duː / muːvmənt juː/ (I think it is difficult to speak like this, I would say the second and the third "you" without any stress, "/jə/" the reason why is that I usually don´t stress pronouns when they are in the middle of a sentence, even knowing that the correct weak form of the pronoun "you" is / ju /, but, perhaps it can be useful to use the strong form of these words because we need the /uː/ sound for this example.) "THROUGHOUT" Professor Sir Greg said the pronunciation was /θruːaʊt/ we can think of it as two words joined: THROUGH + OUT /θruː/ + /aʊt / He called the diphthong /əʊ/ as "the bad news sound"... so maybe we can define the diphthong /aʊ/ as the "the sound of pain" "au". 4. "THOROUGH" /θʌrə/ Finally, we have "THOROUGH", what a crazy word, really, because I don’t find any relation with another similar word, for instance, take a look at the word "ROUGH", the same five letters but the pronunciation is /rʌf/, so, I´m wondering, why the voiceless phoneme /f/ is here representing the letters [GH] whereas in the word "THOROUGH" the same letters [GH] are silent? Best Regards.
@FC-PeakVersatility
@FC-PeakVersatility Жыл бұрын
thorough - (said thurrah or thurroh) see also borough sounds like the burgh in Edinburgh and rhymes with David Attenborough. Sort of long story short - because the English language was built from so many different roots similar spellings became associated with entirely different sounds. The gh in words like thorough and weigh came with a hard guttural pronunciation that doesn’t exist in English so became silent.

I noticed in the video that the different pronunciations of 'OUGH' as in the words "ENOUGH" or "COUGH" weren't mentioned. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for non-native speakers to know the differences in pronunciation except to learn them at the same time they learn each word. Sometimes if I am writing in a hurry (informally) as in taking notes, I will shorten the words by spelling them phonetically, like "THO, THRU, THOT, ENUFF," etc. This never works when writing formally.

You forgot the word hiccough, which has yet another pronunciation.

🤷 it’s also a word falling out of favour since it was built on the misapprehension that the chest spasm was connected to an actual cough. Hiccup is the older word and hiccough, though dating from the 1500s, only adopted into general language in the 1800s, hence why it’s not used in Am English - so, for a change, anglicised rather than americanised.

@@FC-PeakVersatility That is very true, but nevertheless it is a word that is in the English dicitionaries, and it still is a word that ends in -ough that has a different pronunciation than the ones presented in the video.

@@dannestrom I’m all for keeping the old words alive as long as possible, though I grieve over a few whose meaning has had a millennial makeover. I had difficulty finding a pronunciation of hiccough given all sources I found default to hiccup though my memory seems to think that was not the case.
