A wise man once told me, "Always use the right tool for the job." Watching this great video proved that old adage once again! This video is you-tube gold! Complete step by step guide to fixing my problem in 5 minutes! Thanks MJ The feeling i got when the suction broke loose and filter turned was uplifting. Thank you! A 1/2" strap wrench and great big ole' husky extendable 1/2" breaker bar are now a permanent part of the arsenal. Oil filters are next!

I just want to thank you! I just bought a house and after multiple attempts involving many tools, methods, and people I thought I’d have to call a water treatment specialist to remove my stuck filter. This tool and method worked after only a few tries! I’m unbelievably relieved and grateful :)

Thanks so much. I was very frustrated and worried that I'd have to call in a plumber during the Virus Shutdown. Found you immediately on KZbin, order the strap, and now 3 days later the problem is solved. Can't believe how AGAIN KZbin, and folks like you, saved the day.

Good video. I have the same water filters and the first time I went to take them off I swear I must have used epoxy on the threads when I installed them. Saw this video, bought the strap and it did the trick. I didn't need the breaker bar as I have an extra long handle on my 1/2" ratchet wrench. The only thing I would add to this video is I had more luck bringing the strap around the filter from left to right. That way the strap that threads through the metal piece doubles up the strap around the filter, creating more turning power.

Just saw this video in Oct. of 2024. Been fighting for a week and have been through 3 plastic filter wrenches so far. Thought I search about how to get a stuck filter off and yours was first. Ordered the tool from link and will keep ya posted! (fingers crossed!).

I was also frustrated with the housing. Felt frozen in place. I purchased a Lisle 60200 wrench from Amazon (came day after I ordered), followed your instructions, and it loosened just as easy as you demonstrated in video. Thanks much!!

Mark, thank you for the clear and concise video explaining the strap wrench. I moved from the northern U.S. to SE Arizona ("The Wild West"), and boy have I been learning a lot!! I went to change my oil in my older F150 and couldn't find my 3/8" strap wrench as I had just moved. I tried ALL the alternatives that I already owned and none worked. I dug and dug and found the strap wrench and it came right off. So, suffice it to say, the person who referenced using the right tool for the job is 1,000% correct. I am going to try the one I have for oil filters to try and remove the well filter, but I will purchase the one you bought (great design!) if it doesn't work. This tool is an end all and be all for the removal of ALL filters in my opinion. The water shutoff valve removal tool I discovered from English Tools out of Wyoming was a billion percent worth the money too; just an FYI. Anyway, the well has had numerous repairs and still isn't working (not fun in triple digit heat) so I'm going to remove the filter, the check valve, pressure gauge nipples/hose, etc. and look for occlusions. I've already done everything else but the booster pump would not kick on at low pressure. You might wonder why I haven't called a well specialist and that would be because they charge an arm, leg and then some, and are a total monopoly in this area and take advantage of that. I need to learn my system in and out in this area anyway so the torture is worth the effort in the long run.

Thanks. I used your Lisle Web Wrench tip to remove stubborn water filters. It worked, but the ‘fins’ on my filters are tapered, unlike the big blue filters, so it wasn’t quite as easy as you described. My ratchet wrench twisted and turned on me making it difficult to apply the needed torque, and the web strap kept slipping on the filter casing. I wrapped the cartridge with rubber sheet, actually a section of an old bicycle inner tube. That prevented the strap from slipping and I was finally able to remove my cartridges.

Thank you so much. Had purchased a second flexible wrench with no luck. This tool was only $32 on Amazon and works like a charm. Requires a little patience to figure it out (extra set of hands the first time would help) and a 2’ length of 3/4” black iron gas pipe to extend the ratchet handle. Thanks again!

Bought strap at a heavy duty auto parts store here on Hawaii island. Go to a REAL auto parts store, not the cute ones with not much in them, and forget home depot or ace. Extra pipe helped this old gal with enuff torque to do the job. Filters changed and I have hot water thru the Bosch again, Hallelujah! Mark Jenkins is the you tube king 👑!

This works! Last week I couldn’t get the 10 inch Omnifilter loose because I probably over tightened it a bit when changing it out before. I tried so hard to get it off with no success. I saw this video and ordered a 1/2 inch breaker bar set and the wrench strap and within a couple tried I got it off without any issues. Great video!!!

I'm gong to try an order the breaker bar set. My neighbor tried getting mine off and when he kept putting force on the cheap handle you get, he actually pulled it off the wall. Guess the plumber didn't secure it correctly to the foundation.

thanks to this video, I was able to remove my stucked big blue filters, all you need is the yoke and a breaker bar (you don't need the extension bar), make sure you get a pipe to extend it for additional torque. It took me 3 tries to break loose my filter, so don't give up! The first two times the clamp broke off once the exerted force exceeds its limit, but it is just working slowly, give it a few more tries and you should be able to break loose your filter.

Just like you described, I wasted my time and money trying 2 plastic wrenches, and the metal wrench which just damages the filter. The wrench you suggested worked perfectly, thank you!

This works. I was able to loosen my filter and I didn’t have to ask anyone for help!!. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to tools. I bought the ratchet and the breaker bar because I thought they fit together🤣 also was in a hurry too before work. I did eventually purchase the connector piece (still don’t know what it is called)and got the filter off. Thanks for posting this. My filter doesn’t even look like that (mine is more narrow) and it works. If you don’t have a ratchet - you should probably buy a set that has the ratchet and the connector pieces. Just buying the ratchet and the belt thing won’t work.

You ARE the Man. You are so right about those plastic wrenches. This works “Snap!”
@primovino39124 жыл бұрын
Snap being the operative word, my plastic wrench snapped apart the other day, while trying to unloosen the filter housing. I was going to order a metal wrench yesterday and the thought occurred to me earlier the next day....I forgot to order the metal wrench when I placed an order on Amazon.com for other items!!!! I then decided to google search on what is the easiest way to remove the filter housing 's that get stuck (hoping to find some information about using anything I already have at home) and this video came up....I'll have to purchase this strap, but I will, as the maker of the video said, there is more than 1 use with this strap....I do have ratchets and a breaker bar, so buying one item (that I was going to buy anyway) is not bad. Everything happens for a reason, this reason being was not to buy the metal filter wrench, but to buy this tool!

Brilliant I’ll try it be thanks. Also be sure to use the pressure relief valve on the housing before loosening.

An even better solution would be for the engineers who design whole house water filter housings to figure out a "better way to build a mouse-trap". Millions of customers are all dealing with the same problem and the companies selling these look at the problem and must say to themselves, oh well, this is the way we've always done it.

Just a heads up: Make sure you release enough of the pressure through the pressure release button. I was having a hell of a time once and I tried everything I could think of including this Lisle device. Nothing worked. I stood there and relieved the pressure for a bit and the housing unscrewed easily after that.
@philbellmore9944 Жыл бұрын
I had to hold that red button down for almost 10 minutes before all the water and air finally reduced to a dribble. Shocked there was that much pressure in there. And still couldn't get the housing to release with the plastic wrench. Ordering this as a last ditch attempt to open this SOB

Mark, would you specify the exact type of extension that fits the metal piece for the strap wrench. The one we got has a slightly rounded end and does not fit in tight at all. Please specify. As well, need same specifications for wrench. The bar fits into the wrench but not all the way and tight, so I'm assuming we need a square fit? Thanks! Lisa

I purchased one and followed your video as I attempted to remove mine. Still unable to wrestle it loose. The previous homeowner must have used his wrench to tighten it. Not sure what to do now,and yes, I killed the main water feed to remove pressure, and pressed the red button on top of the housing. What can you suggest next,outside of calling a plumber ?
@Nakameguro974 жыл бұрын
Looking top down, make sure you turn CLOCKWISE (yes, it's the opposite of screws!). My beginner mistakes were not relieving the pressure (red button, faucets) and turning the wrong way. The rubber strap worked fine for me once I did those two things.

Got it loose, such a relief. The old filter gaskets had broken away from the filter body, was that caused by over pressure due to waiting too long to change it? And yep I used the Lisle 60200.

Tried the plastic tool...no go...saw this video, got the lisle tool (way cheaper than a plumber, so a worthy experiment). Oops, need a 1/4 to 1/2 extender for my wrench (Home Depot). Ok Video, but doesn't tackle worse case scenario. The worst scenario, the big blue is disconnected from the pex wall attachments because you just break the fittings if you apply force. So with this annoying free standing Big Blue, how do you get Queen of Queens B, off? The issue is you need lots of force, stability and balance, so how do you pull it off smart and smarter than this video? #1 the wrench tool in the video is particularly crap. I have one that is a sturdy black plastic. You need a sturdy plastic wrench or the tool in the video. Step 2 is not what it seems, you need a 12" Bessey clamp, it has a round end (usually a piece of plastic or rubber over metal that is red) and same material on the other end except the other end is more rectangular. On the rectangular end, you remove that plastic and it gives you something that will fit inside the 1" NPT hole of the 10" Big Blue. So what on Earth do you do with the other side; you have to be smart. I used the lid of a hair gel cylinder (needs to be thick enough and somewhat flexible plastic) this goes over the 1" NPT and you try to line up the round end with the center of the 1" NPT except it will hit the plastic; then you have to clamp it perfectly tight so that you have apply enough resistance without going through the plastic. Now you think complicated and this is not going to work. Not so fast, I haven't finished. Now you go to Home Depot or any similar store and buy 2 3/4 iron plumbing pipes (not copper), for one of them you buy the 3/4 to [1 1/4"] converter, a [1 1/4"] union piece. Save 1 3/4 iron pipe and connect the rest together. The assembly goes over the wrench, the lone pipe extends the Bessey. Get ready to f***. You win, I promise you. Now all you need to is the lid goes counter clockwise, and Big Blue goes clockwise. If you you mess that up, you will royally f******. You'll basically break the seal, break the threads. So you apply some plumber's silicone lubricant (needs to water safe you are drinking, bathing don't be dummy) you apply that to the top and the inner end of the threads and you tighten only ideally only with wrench if you are strong enough, if you are somewhat weak you can use the Bessey without extension, but don't over tighten. So my o-ring is busted on mine, I mean, expanded beyond easily fitting on. So what did I do, I assembled in reverse, I put the lid on the ground, the oring on the lid, and screw the whole thing on. And it worked, no leaks. Think man think. I just took care of all the problems you might have with Big Blue, say thank you. Those iron pipes and fittings are cheap too.
