Nice work. Yours was the 3rd video I had to watch before I got any real solution to the corroded battery problem. I actually soaked my mini mag light in water overnight & let it dry completely after knocking the corroded batteries out. Mine had been sitting for 15 months, (covid coincidence? I think not). I ramrodded some steel wool through the tube & reassembled it according to your instructions. Your "helper" was very cute too..."We're saving lives, son" hilarious! 5 Stars.

Can't believe this video popped up in my feed! I lost one of those identical flashlights many years ago, and just found it last week. Went to change the batteries, and they were FROZEN. Couldn't get the second battery out, and didn't know how to get the LED out, so I threw it in the garbage. Just pulled it out of the garbage and used the socket trick. Couldn't hammer it out, so I had to go to an arbor press and press it out. I had to get all the crap inside of the light body out with a file because it was so bad. Put it back together and it works! THANK YOU!!! 👍

In my cases they were always the Duracell brand that exploded/leaked and got stuck. Tried to do it this way, but no luck. Had to revert to drilling a hole in a still rather live battery (I thought: 'it's leaking, so it's probably dead'... well no, it wasn't...) and then screw a nice large 80 millimeter long wood-screw into 'em (I'm Dutch, no idea what you call a 'spaanplaatschroef' in English). Thought I would get it out easily once the screw was in, but I had to grip the head of the screw in a vise and use all my 55 kilo to pull on the light until it eventually started moving. Still took a shitload of force but eventually a satisfying 'plop' made sure it was out. Oh btw, please just interrupt the video if your kid comes in. They only grow up once ;)

Found one 2 days ago at my local supermarket's recycling bin for waste electronics somebody threw away. 😇🤗 It had that miniature (working !) traditional glass krypton bulb. So not an LED. I'm going to get that upgrade for it in the future. 🤔😎 Anyways... a wedged leaked Duracell AA batery was stuck inside. But I was able to get the battery out from the other side by gently hitting that plastic piece to push it out. 😊👍 Luckily the leak wasn't big & the corrosion on the inner metal tube part wasn't significant. So I just used some sanding paper & a metal file to remove the jagged surface left by the alkaline liquid from the battery. 🙄😏 I put some minerail oil on the inside of the walls of the metal tube part of the flashlight to ensure easy sliding of AA batteries out. 😆

Nice job handling your interruption lol. As an added tip, soaking the tube (minus electronics) in white cider vinegar for a couple hours can help make that cleanup/brushing out a lot easier and less traumatic to the flashlight than using a screwdriver to scrape it out.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy Жыл бұрын
Tried that, didn't help at all. Had to use insane force to get it out (insane force in this case: drilling a hole in the stuck battery (which was still rather live even though very leaky) and then getting a large screw in. Levering it out by using a pair of large pliers did not work, I had to put the head of the screw in a vise and then pull on the battery with my full bodyweight (55 kilo) and still had trouble getting it out. Cleaning was a shit process as well. Soaked the entire battery-holder assembly in a bag completely filled with vinegar and scrubbed the living daylight out of the insides with an old toothbrush and scraped with scalpels, but it's still not completely clean.
@timothyhedrick5295
@timothyhedrick5295 Жыл бұрын
@@weeardguy yeah I was referring to soaking the tube in vinegar AFTER physical removal of the batteries not before. Soaking before removal, I would think might actually result in more gunk from within the batteries coating them inside the tube and potentially making extraction more difficult. Could be wrong though. Based on your description of extraction of the batteries, sounds like you had a rather extreme case of corrosion.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy Жыл бұрын
@@timothyhedrick5295 Well, I didn't refer to soaking it in vinegar before physical removal as well. I soaked the battery-holder assy but sure as hell not with the battery still in it. As vinegar neutralizes the acid, I can't think it will make matters worse friction-wise, but I doubt it would have made a difference in this one ;) Yeah and the worst is that it was a write-off from work, where I have been one of many that had to replace the Maglite because of leaky batteries. Thank god we have switched to Varta batteries that aren't as prone to premature leakage... But I have now noted on my tool checklist to inspect the maglite once every 6 months...

I'm Dutch, so don't get me going on this one: I used an 8 mm socket. That's 0.314 Inch, but don't get me started on what the actual designation is in imperial sizes ;) I guess, judging how close it is to a 1/3 of an inch it probably is, but hey, I'm a metric guy ;) (and always get a headache at work, where i have to deal with imperial sizing/dimensions a lot...). But mine was so stuck I could not get it out this way. I had to drill a hole in the battery and get a thick screw in and then pull on it like mad (I needed my full body weight (55 kilo) and it still was hard)

Try using a pick or thin screwdriver and put it through the hole in the cap that’s designed for a clip or holder. Use the the tool for leverage. If you have the end of the flashlight facing you turn it counter clockwise. You can also try spraying some WD40 where the threads are. If that doesn’t work apply heat where it screws in. Be careful as it will be hot to handle it so make sure you where protective gloves.

IIt's not acid but alkaline. When alkaline batteries have leaked it's hard to remove all the gunk from a device. Acids can be used to neutralize the alkaline. Vinegar works but I'm using vinegar essence diluted to a concentration of about 5%. When the acid reacts with the alkaline, the alkaline will fizz for a short moment. Continue until the fizzing stops. The rinse and dry thoroughly. This does not remove all the chunky bits of alkaline battery goo but it neutralizes it removing its corrossiveness. I've used this numerous times to deal with leaked batteries in all sorts of devices. It failed me only once when a circuit booard ha already virtually ceased to exist before I started. Lesson learnt: remove batteries from devices when you don't use them. And don't ever trust batteries advertised as leak proof. In my experience ALL will leak sooner or later. Be extra paranoid with batteries stored under extreme conditions such as in hot cars.

Your battery is not leaking much. There is no movement with batteries truly welded to the body.

Have a few of those mini mags, none of the end caps could be screwed out due to major battery corrosion even using a pipe wrench to the point of destroying it. The others immersed in penetrating oil for months, no can do because of the liquid tight O ring blocking any penetration. I bought a dozen of them over time and left it everywhere like tool boxes car glove box compartments and forgot to change out the batteries every few years. Alkaline batteries even top quality ones will leak, recharables not so much. Maglites were the tops in its days, fortunately we have better flashlights much brighter and cheaper with multiple functions like flashing, dimming and annunciation to change or recharge the batteries.

Invariably the end cap is stuck also if the battery is stuck, so how do we get the end cap off? These are a very poor design of torch, how many videos on this problem are out there?! I wouldn't buy another one that's for sure.

Alkaline batteries don't have any acid in them, they have alkali, the opposite of acid.

Same effect though. An alkali burns just as readily as an acid does.

@@Backoffboogaloo However, one neutralizes alkali by putting acid on it, so it's *not the same*, if you put more alkali because some ignorant fool who thinks "it's the same because it burns" told you there was acid in the batteries, you just make things *worse*.

@@diamaunt2782 don’t you try to argue semantics when you didn’t read my comment properly in the first place. A chemical burn is a chemical burn no matter whether an acid or an alkali is involved. Same effect. I did NOT say it was the same, nor did I even say they were burning in the same manner. The effect is the same. It’s a chemical burn. Very similar kinds of tissue damage. The only difference is in the treatment. You need to know which one is the culprit in order to treat it. It’s a bit like ethanol and methanol. Very similar effect but opposite molecules. In fact you can use ethanol to treat methanol poisoning. Now. What was the point of of arguing when I told you already that you misread my comment? Ps before you comment further, please be aware that my degree is in chemistry.

"something important" was that child demanding your attention. The flashlight and the video will take care of themselves. Love it when pets and kids (and wives) step into the picture. Cut! Take two!

Gently MY ASS... had to flog the thing! After two days of emersion in vinegar and flogging, using a press and serious persuasion I'm getting very close with both batteries out only items in the tube are LED unit and a socket. Good news is that maglite.com customer support was great, sending me damaged LED parts FREE with only $8 fee.
