Think of what you want, your desire to want to be a screenwriter and the struggle (don’t use that as a story as is done to death lol) but use those desires and feelings you personally have. They then can be applied to any dream. But well before the hero gets to be a hero, i.e. when he’s just a normal guy before the main story… It could be a student who wants to become an awesome lawyer defending the vulnerable, but his parents die from the police raiding the wrong house, now he has no financial help from his parents, ends up alone with depression anger and drops out of university. He sees injustice by the police to the poor, so he instead becomes a private investigator to catch the cops falsely laying charges on poor vulnerable people, eventually he catches the very same police that killed his parents framing someone. He heroically takes that to the media and wins the day. That same dream he has to help the vulnerable could go a different way, instead of him targeting the police he targets drug dealers who the police were meant to raid, kicks their door down and kills them, he loves it so much he realises he is a vigilante so goes around killing drug dealers. or (back to the start) he helps vulnerable poor because he became a low wage worker in a poorly run factory, where he noticed their was a lot of migrant labourers who were paid even less, He could use the few legal skills he learnt to help these people. That’s his dream becoming heroic Or maybe he becomes a vigilante and kicks the doors down of any company owners that exploit poor people, the end of that movie would be of guns blazing while killing multiple rich arrogant wankers! (Satisfying ending 😂) Or a different outcome but same dream, This time his dream to become a lawyer helping the poor becomes even stronger, to legally avenge the deaths of his parents! But to finance his studies he finds multiple crazy ways of making money, winning and losing in online money making ventures, bartender, selling his body as a gigolo, but he never gives up. In this case the story really is the journey, never giving up on the set dream, and eventually he finally becomes a lawyer, and the movie ends on him delivering an amazing argument in his case against the police. Or same dream again but his parents didn’t die, they weee just too poor to help him, same crazy ways of making money too, and at the end when he becomes a lawyer in his first case ever, he delivers an amazing argument that you know he’s going to be an amazing lawyer. Notice how in all cases he still was motivated by his initial desired dream of helping vulnerable people. Not all cases did the actual literal dream of a lawyer come true, but his ‘moral dream’ was to help the vulnerable, and that did come true. He’s a hero in all those cases because he made the moral dream come true The key is to apply the desired dream at the start of any hero story Use your own emotions and desires or that of someone you know or a blend. The story then can end up in many different outcomes, as long as it follows that initial dream

Luke choice to leave with Ben does make sense in that it follows a trope of storytelling; there’s nothing home to return to. Your protagonist should never be able to walk away from the story. They need a reason why they are involved. For example, the Day after tomorrow the main character goes to New York when the world is ending to save his son.there’s a personal investment. Prison Break, both main characters are trapped inside and can’t walk away. In Luke’s case there is nothing to return to. The links holding him back are gone and he’s able to focus on wanting to be a Jedi/ a hero.

Hey Tyler, I know this might seem a little dumb to you.. but can you elaborate the difference between a story and a screenplay. And most importantly when/how do I know if I have a complete story (I meant entire story outline or synopsis) before attempting to write a screenplay. Like for me, I cannot start a screenplay without having a complete story synopsis or outline or any complete information as to what I want to write. But everytime I get to the point where I think that I got the entire outline or info or synopsis right, I eventually realize that I don't have much to start a screenplay. I need to know where to draw the line. Like when can stop worrying about the ouline or synopsis and just start the screenplay. Can you please make a video for clarifying this particular query. I hope you'd consider my request. 🙂

Stories exist on various mediums (novels, plays, movies, short stories, television, spoken word) and have existed since the dawn of men. Storytelling is media-less. It's a form of communication that is innate to humans. Screenplays are specific blueprints used to make motion pictures (or TV shows). It's a specific medium. It is only a type of storytelling, which has its own rules and conventions. Screenwriting is a form of storytelling.

The story is the screenplay without a story you have no screenplay. If you check out his playlists "A Guide to Screenwriting", or "The fundamentals of Screenwriting" playlist everything you are seeking is there. If you are pressed for time and don't want to watch the 14 videos watch his Dan Harmon Story circle video that I know you will definitely find useful called "Using the Story Circle to structure your screenplay." (first video under A guide to screenwriting paylist) that is your "one stop shop" video, but from reading this question I would definitely say check out his "The Fundamentals of Screenwriting" Playlist. Just click on his page and click playlist and there are 14 videos that cover characters, storyline, how to create conflict, etc. Hope this helps 🙂

Is it ok to not use the story circle in every scene in the first act? I feel like I have to write scenes that shows what the protagonist is about. Not needing conflict in the first scenes of the story.
@dude53302 жыл бұрын
If I can remember right from one of Tyler’s videos, the reaction to conflict is what makes our characters interesting to the audience and tells the audience what they are all about. It gives us an idea as to who this person is especially when they are in a vulnerable state. Conflict can establish belief systems within the character through an opposing belief or challenge that goes against a characters initial belief. Not only can we learn what beliefs the character has through a starting conflict in the story but also how they react to conflict when it arises. So I believe even in the starting scene to show what your character is about, you need conflict. It doesn’t need to be a large conflict either, it can be something small just to get an idea of who your character is. I hope this helped and good luck to you!!
@TomEyeTheSFMguy2 жыл бұрын
You can show what your character is about with the story circle.
@jayfolk2 жыл бұрын
Try doing the whole story as you want uninfluenced, then try applying the story circle on draft 2 - maybe you applied it already subconsciously, or it not being there may create contrast for future acts that do use it. Every story can be unique.

For scenes and segments you should use positive and negative values (each scene needs to start on a negative or positive note and end in the opposite value)
@agustintassinari5522 жыл бұрын
Agreeing with Dude. If I'm not wrong, Aaron Sorkin has said something similar once, something like when a conflict arises, through the way your character solves that problem, the audience get a better understanding of who they are. The strategy they elaborate to solve the problem illustrates they system of values and beliefs, that defines who they are.

While I understand the writing process isn't linear, shouldn't the want be conceptualized once the author has decided on the Narrative Argument/Philosophical Belief that drives the story?
