I agree. It's REALLY EASY to tell the difference when you see them face to face. Thanks for sharing my friend.

To heck with these twits, *I* love your videos and have found them quite helpful. I have about twenty 6 week old jumbos, and a friend just gave me 30 eggs I am trying to incubate and hatch...another first for me. Thank you for all the great info!!

I can’t cull my animals I love them all and I can see them examining me, bonding and they’re all sweet… I honestly don’t know how anyone could do it. 7 of my quail turned out to be male and 8 are female. I’ve separated the boys (and brought them indoors) from the girls because the crowing was out of control. The females of course are so much happier and the males aren’t super thrilled but they’ve calmed down a lot. They will crow about 1/8 of the time they were before, but at least with them inside it’s less likely to bother my neighbors. I’m convinced I can tame some of them. My most beautiful bird is unfortunately the one causing most of the crowing as he can’t keep his feathers to himself and he was insatiable 👀 I ended up purchasing 6 more females to fill the slots of the boys and am looking forward to getting them.

Does the beak color is also a difference? Black color beak is a male and light color beak is a female?

+michael toth thanks for watching and for commenting. As far as finding birds, check craigslist and local poultry swaps. If worse comes to worse you can have eggs shipped to you and incubate them yourself. If you want to hit me up on facebook and PM me your location I can check with some groups I am a member of and see if anyone has any near you for sale.

I just hatched out my first ever batch of quails - hoping to build a little flock. We have 15 chicks and they've just got their feathers - they're just over 2 weeks old - and I'm 98 percent certain all of them are female! They all have pale specckled breasts. Is 2 and a half weeks too early to tell?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 7 жыл бұрын
You can generally get a decent idea by that age. There is still a chance though that some will turn out to be roosters. If not, you should consider playing the lottery, that is some fantastic luck. :)

I got quail in grow out pens now I have males with solid color brown rust no doubt their males but I have others that have the white with dark speckles I thought would be female I put thoes in my breeder pen and 3 out of 6 I assumed were females got there heads bloodied up do some males have speckled chest ?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
It is possible but unlikely to find males with speckled chests. It isn't uncommon for hens to get beat up like that either. If the roosters are crowing you can vent sex them to be sure. I hope that helps.

How do they fly compared to the regular coturnix? I'd like to use them for training my pointing bird dog. I've had great luck with the regular ones flying well.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 8 жыл бұрын
+Keith Zastrow I am not sure that these would be the best bird for you to work with. Your experience may be different then mine but mine don't really fly at all. It is more like a controlled decent to the ground. :)
@jackgabel2199
@jackgabel2199 7 жыл бұрын
need to keep them in a "fly pen" so they can practice from time to time, feed them flight conditioner and raw veggies - make sure they have sand to scratch and bathe in - make them happy - then try them out - band the best fliers and don't fly them every day - cycle them - our best fliers will go 100 yards on a good day - don't always take flight with the first nudge and sometimes run out before flying, but that's ok - makes your dog steadier if he has to hold longer - mine is really steady from holding on whoa while I run down the bird (if training alone) - he'll hold 5 min. till I get back to release him or throw a fetching dummy - for easier recovery blaze orange flag them (1 inch x 12 inch cotton cloth - trail tape is vinyl - bad scent) - tip: use a chord stop on a short 1/8" chord loop tied to the flag for easy on/off in the field - unlike Chuckars, which can still fly with 4-5 oz attached, these guys can only fly with a very light flag

My quail are same like this but different and do females have yellow spots or males
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
It varies depending on the type of birds you have but with the standard browns, the males have a solid red chest and the females have a speckled chest.

Are they loud as a rooster? Doesnt bug your neighbors I'm thinking of getting some
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
That is very subjective. My neighbors have said that they are not bothered by them at all. They aren't that loud but if you put them right next to your neighbor's bedroom window they would probably complain.

@@Slightlyrednecked thats true. I'm planning on getting a couple and eventually end up with a 3 or 4 females for eggs and they don't scream lol
@noelled6692
@noelled6692 3 жыл бұрын
@@ranchogutierrez5139 my recommendation if you’re anything like me and live in the burbs… buy all females. The males are absolutely loud and annoying and for people who live closer together it’s going to cause issues. My males decided 3:30am was the time to start crowing every morning and would commit to doing it throughout the day. I did bring them inside and they’re not bothering anyone now but I personally feel their quality of life is so much better outside with real sunlight, grass to feed on and things to entertain them. If I knew then what I know now I would have opted for not hatching my own eggs and raising them that way.
@hebcmcidosmeb73
@hebcmcidosmeb73 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, I hatched 4 quail and every single one of them crows, so I think they're all males. Is it alright to keep them all together since there are no females around?
@noelled6692
@noelled6692 3 жыл бұрын
You probably figured out by now the boys will fight. I have them broken up into 2 groups I put the 4 most dominant together so they could establish pecking order and then the three least aggressive together and they’re just chill.

sorry but they start crowing already at 3 weeks old, its just not true crowing, but they start there to train crowing, so you can tell female from male already at 3 weks old. i just got 5 quails at 3 weeks, and theyr defenty crow traning the 3 of them, and it fits wit them being the males. so they start at 3 weeks to crow.

gee they look unhappy walking around on that wire with nothing they'd be interested in except some feed and water - we keep a flock in a 100 sq-foot landscaped fly pen (about 3 hens per roo) - good ratio, they don't fight too much - they love digging, scratching and taking sand baths - biggest problem with a pen like this is rats - always know when they come around - lots of flying - good conditioning though - fly better for my pointer when field training - rarely loose one - flagged to find them easier after they fly - only blank them - never shoot them - biggest risk in the field is flying into a pond or getting picked off by a hawk or eagle

p.s.: i keep my (adult!) birds on (dry!!) sand and love it: it's easy to clean up with a cat-litter scoop. sand is also not an environment that attracts insects - rather the opposite...
