Choosing the right male for a breeding flock is important as he will be the father of many offspring and you want him to pass on the best possible qualities. Here are my thoughts on what to look for in a breeding male quail.

This is hands down the most informative video about raising Quail. I'm new to raising Quail. I've only had them for a couple months now and this is pretty much everything that I needed to know in one video instead of looking all over the place at different videos on how to raise Quail.

Can males go broody?

@@ueueyeheus7010 I wanna know too! My male seems to want to sit on the eggs . I typed this in the search bar. Wondering if perhaps in nature, the male does most of the breeding? Dunno!!

I've found that males are great to have around. Without them hens seem to squabble more amongst themselves. Also I have never had males harrass any one hen specifically nor cause noise and fuss. I kept 8-9 hens with 3 males. When introduced properly males will get along just fine and I also had great fertility this way (around 90% during spring and summer months then it went down a bit in the winter). My hens would also always crouch for my males, without any testing. When I bred, I took the hens who laid either large eggs or the ones who laid the most for me and bred them to the males that were the healthiest and best looking plumage wise. These males were also generally the offspring of previous clutches selected from good laying hens so they were more likely to pass that gene on.

I'm looking into breeding and raising quail as prey items for reptiles. At that 8-10 females to 3 males ratio, how many fertile eggs are you producing on a monthly basis? Also, do the females brood and hatch the eggs themselves or do you pull the eggs and incubate them separately? If you incubate separately, how do you go about reintroducing the chicks into the larger colony? So many questions! Lol

This is kind of funny but it is all good advice. I'm on my third year of quail keeping. Last year I breed a roo who was beautiful. He had bright colors, a great body form, and he was large, only a little smaller then my hens! The problem was he was both a bully and hated by every bird. I've never seen a male quail who was hated so much. Females refused to be near him and would peck at his face when he got persistent. One hen even make the "angry dinosaur noise" at him with an open beak. He would try to catch a female by the head and she would keep going, flailing her head about until he let go. I named him "Disliked" and waited for awhile longer. You mentioned crowing and Disliked crowed constantly. I was hoping he would calm down and be accepted. That never happened. I ended up keeping his calmer but less pretty brother.

no, get another male. that one is useless. a skilled male doesnt cause so much damage when mating. Some males are just too aggressive or too small too properly mount

Thx so much, I have wondered about all that. I would imagine pretty quail are healthier quail as well- but I have a young female pharoah whose top beak a slightly deformed, and she lays the biggest eggs. And her sister who looks perfect does not lay regularly. Go figure.

Do you know what causes irregular egg laying in a 3 mo old hen? She was late to laying as well- maybe 10 wks. Sometimes it is soft shell.

@@KaylahDemi that seems to be the case after I did more research in forums, the practice of them being crowded into small cages doesn’t give them a chance to learn these maternal behaviors or instincts. These natural behaviors may have been bred out of them too, as they are kept purely for egg and meat production.
