That's a great thing to know! We had an electric fence on the farm when I was growing up but never thought to test it, just assumed it was working. It would burn through any piece of grass that grew high enough to touch it. I was riding with Mom one time and when we got home, she drove forward a bit too far and the car was touching the fence. I opened the door and jumped out, but when I tried to close the door I got a terrific shock. We laughed about that one for quite a while.

I immediately went out and tried this on my electrical fence. Works like a charm without any pain, just this tingling pulse in the fingers! Excellent to know when you don't have any sorts of tools around (which very often is the case) Thanks a lot!

So simple! Wish I had known you in high school. As you know long grass touching the fence will short it out. It was a fairly continuous chore checking the electric fence. Our dad used to send my sister or me to check it by grabbing the wire. If we felt a jolt in a few seconds we knew it wasn't shorted out. (This was a task we dreaded for obvious reasons.) It wasn't until we were in university we discovered that for under $10 you could buy something to touch the wire with that showed if there was current going through it. Then we discovered Dad knew about that all along but didn't see any point in wasting $10. (Not sure we ever forgave dad for that.😃)

It's worth knowing this. I got zapped by a pig fence once and it felt like a giant squeezed my heart. I wish I could have spoken to the farmer about that actually. It was way too powerful and there weren't even any cattle nearby...
@LandisLegacyFarm
@LandisLegacyFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Fun Fact.... Electric fence for pigs actually needs to be WAY hotter than fence for cattle. Cattle are more respectful, and don't tend to "test" the fence like pigs do. In addition to that, since pigs root around, they can end up shoving dirt on the bottom wire, which reduces the quality of shock. So by starting with something really hot, you'll still be delivering a decent shock even when it's somewhat grounded. Josh

I’ve seen people just grab the wire and the shock is not that strong. But touching the wire with a finger will give you a good jolt and even jump a spark. Give it a try and you’ll see it does work. Just grab the wire and squeeze hard. I’m not joking.

A better way is to place the back of your hand to the wire. If you all use the palm of your hand your muscles will contract around the wire, therefore harder to escape.

You forgot to mention, if you hear a snap, there is no more reason to move your finger closer.. it's HOT and you forgot to mention, If that blade of grass is wet (or has dew on it) and or your feet are wet, you should be ready for a good shock even at 4 inches.. SNAP!

My dad would grab an electric fence. Sometimes he still couldn't tell so he would use the back of his hand. Sometimes he had to lick the back of his hand before he could feel it. It was a trick he could pull. Grab the fence and then tell somebody that it wasn't hot. Us kids just waited for the inevitable snap and cursing. Always tough to keep from laughing too soon.

Had to chuckle when you talked of shenanigans. That was me yesterday when fishing. A local farmer kindly allows access to the stream from his property for fly fishing but it involves an electric fence. I'm sure I was quiet a sight as I wriggled my way underneath the fence in waders and boots. Decided today to see if there was some old school way to tell and was glad to learn your method. I'll give it a try next time. Thanks.

Why are people so scared of an electric fence ? Imagine if the power company turned off the power each time they worked on a line ? Shock therapy is not bad. It relaxes the muscles ! Just take hold of the wire and do what you have to do ! So many wimps ! Its the snap that you feel ! If you take hold if it with a firm grip it dont hurt !
