According 3:32, is elaborating evidence basically just talking about what assumptions you made that led you to believe your claim? I've transitioned from writing argument essays in AP Lang to writing research papers for my college class, and I still find ALOT of trouble with explaining how my evidence proves my claim.

The short answer is "yes." Commentary is best developed by including cause-and-effect language. (Because, consequently, while, since, so that, this, therefore, furthermore, etc.)

Timm, your tips are immensely helpful. I must admit that I have fallen down the rabbit hole a bit. I have a specific question with regard to post-graduate research papers: must one add commentary after paraphrasing (not quotations), or is your commentary technically enmeshed within that paraphrase?

It depends on what you're using the paraphrase for. If the paraphrased information is used as the example that proves your point, you should consider adding some commentary; however, if you are embedding paraphrased language because it provides the reasoning of your argument (which often post-graduate paraphrasing does), there's no obligation to provide added commentary.
