The spooning technique is mainly followed in the southern states of USA, not a generic technique ..... for keeping the knives not pointing out comes from the middle ages, where keeping a knife pointing out was only done when the knights were dining in hostile conditions, and by not pointing it out meant the knight felt secure in the company of fellow diners, hence no physical threat was present ...... the same philosophy is also followed in Japan with chopsticks ......

In English we say "have" soup not "eat" soup and bread is cut with the knife not broken with hand, and butter is not put on the plate, it is scooped up by the knife and put directly on the bread.
