Hey, Dan. Thanks for the video. Exactly what I was searching for. I agree, this is the next level anyone should take to take a step ahead of the landscape game. This video put it in the exact perspective needed to convince me it's the right step. What I was debating on is, is the extra time worth it, or is the definition worth it. This shows the speed is still there, once perfected and probably after the first initial edge, and the definition is worth even If the time is a bit longer. Thanks.

Dan: I thorougly blade-edged the sidewalk and driveway perimeter of my yard 20-some years ago with a big, purpose-made gas edger. As you say, establishing that initial groove is important. Ever since, I been able to just string-edge those places quite effectively. After a couple decades of soil conditioning, my turf is about 3" above the sidewalk and driveway surfaces. I don't edge each time (it is my own property) but I try to string-edge at least every three weeks. You need to keep after the edging. Once sod has formed over the hard surfaced, string-trimming get really hard. Around Beds/Trees: I realize these places are where the blade machine would be really great. I wish I had seen your video earlier as I just pounded in 5" metal edging around everything this spring! I think it might still be a good thing because the mulch now stays out of the grass better and the string isn't flipping so mulch of it out into the yard (and my face). The blade around beds is a great idea! I may have to get one. I have a Split Shaft Echo, so all I need is the blade edger accessory. String-Edging Technique: I find I am able to strike a cleaner line when I stand on the grass side and walk backwards. I spin the string and let it discover the concrete edge then let it follow that hard edge as I move backwards, bracing the boom against my hip for stability. I also angle the spool toward the grass and simultaneously establish a slight bevel. I use the same method when doing beds. My neighbor stands on the pavement and walks forward. I don't complain, but his string wanders and makes a huge, wandering gouge. You are so right about the problem of string-edging under shrubs. It happens this is not an issue in my limited environment. Question: I edge the sidewalks all the way from my driveway to my neighbor's. Most everyone else stops at the end of their own property line. I think it looks nicer and it is certainly not much more work. Am I being rude?
@DansVlog4 жыл бұрын
No you’re not being rude, you’re being neighborly. It’s different when you’re a business though. We have no right to touch somebody’s property that did not hire us to be on their property therefore we are not necessarily protected should something go wrong. People call me lazy for stopping at my customers edge but those people don’t understand it’s safer as a business to do what you’re paid to do and nothing more.

I really like your thoughts and opinions on edging with a edger vs with a weed whacker do you think its ok if you keep up on the edging on the lawn and you have a nice gouge in the sidewalks that sometimes it is quicker to just run over the edge with a wacker rather than having to pull out the edger?

There's some properties that I've seen where .. the edging has been neglected for what looks like three decades. The level of the grass has built up higher than the curb, (we're talking a good 30 degree slope over the curb) and I worry that if I introduce an edger blade to those curbs it'll look even more crappy than it already does. @stevenclark54504 жыл бұрын
Dan, you are truly the edging master! Do you always edge with the wheel facing the concrete side? I was edging a sidewalk the other day (was overgrown, had not been edged for a year or longer) and I found it difficult to have the wheel ride up and down the bumpy edge while trying to keep and hold at straight line. For the first pass or two I found it easier to have the wheel on the grass side. Once the grass was mostly removed, I was then able to zip along quickly with the wheel on the sidewalk side. Your thoughts?
