I agree, I feel like color grading is a great technique for someone trying to develop a personal style, initially. I used to use color grading frequently, but these days it's very rare to inject it into my scenes, and if so, it's very minimal.

I would say I struggle the most with color. Trying to be sure my colors are how I want them and if they make since because I want the viewer to feel like they are there looking at the image. Great video!

I always enjoy seeing someone with skills process an image. I also always find that everyone does the adjustments in a different order. And there never seems to be a wrong way to attach the process. For me, I always start with lens correction if I do it after basic adjustments I have to go back and readjust the basics.

I agree with you here, I'm almost a decade into photography and editing images, using LR and PS, and I still find great gratification in watching someone else edit an image. For one, I always learn something new, almost every time, like in this video when Mike used the radial gradient to vignette the sky and subtracted out a linear gradient to remove the foreground. Brilliant simple technique and I love the effect on the sky! Mike has such an elegant hand in post, all his techniques are broad and subtle, and I find as I get more experienced as a photographer -- this is the direction I want my own work to follow. Like, trying to convey the idea, color, contrast, whatever, with the absolute least technique. Just enough to get the viewer to see what I want, without punching them in the face with the edit or the specific technique.

Exposure blending with luminosity masks is my nemesis. No matter how many times I "learn it" it always throws me for a loop when it comes time to apply it. I have no problem using luminosity masks for dodging/burning but for some reason exposure blending with them and ending up with a realistic result perpetually eludes me. Really good tip on feathering the select sky adjustment!

Hey Michael! As usual, I enjoyed your processing video. It is always calming to watch your videos and it feels very soulful. One thing that I find difficult most times during post-processing is using luminosity masks for exposure and time blending. I know these are advanced techniques and I still have a long way to go to get a grasp on it.

Thank you for the video. It's nice to see adjustments to an image with a current version of LR. The new tools for local adjustments and their subtleties are amazing. I'm going to have to watch your video several times to learn it all. So much has changed in the last year. You referenced using Adobe Color as the 'OK 'color profile. Focusing on the most accurate profile would be the color profile of your camera's sensor. To do that, use ColorChecker Camera Calibration (24-patch classic target) to create the camera sensor's profile and add that to your choices ( instead of Adobe Color, you use Nikon D850). Then you start with a calibrated color profile. Just like your monitor, calibrated. You can create profiles for each camera body (Sony, Canon, Fuji, etc.). Try it and watch the color shifts from the default Adobe Color. Unless color accuracy is only important for portraiture and reproduction. Just a thought!

For me it is running water...usually some waterfall or stream in a woodland...darker/brigter/clarity/dehaze back and forth 😁 anyway great video as always 👍 thanks

Thanks for the tutorial, the virtual copy was a very nice trick. One thing I usually struggle with is matching my colors and contrast (usually the latter) on my desktop with my phone. My phone just kills the contrast. It could be a factor of color space calibration, glare, brightness and a lot more between the devices.

My main limitation is using LR 6.2 but after watching this video I think there's usually a work around. One just has to get creative.

Great video. My issue is always balancing the light and shade in my images. I am currently working on improving my selective process to improve where I feel my images can be lightened or darkened. I feel this is one of the best ways to add that individual touch to my images so I develop a style that is all mine.

As always a great tutorial. I have been using DxO Photolab5 for some time and find that the combination of tools gives easy selective editing and is well worth a test for any one using Lightroom and or photoshop.

biggest issue: work with color. I understand color theory, I know how to adjust colors with different tools. Despite seeing tons and tons of images, I still struggle when editing colors to get them "right" and not receiving comments like "play a bit with that yellow, so it does not look like pee..." or "that green is strange" :D

Great tutorial! Only suggestion I have, since we can customize the order of the dropdowns in Lightroom, move Lens Correction to the top and take care of it first. Depending on the lens there might be some more extreme cases of distortion & vignetting that once corrected can change your exposure; don't want to spend the time getting the right exposure only to have to go back after.

Nice video Michael. To answer your question, I always think your images have a certain pop to them, even if they are not saturated or contrasty. I struggle to get this in my photos without pushing the saturation or contrast up. Without that the photos look meh or washed out. Hope that makes sense😅

Subtracting with a gradient from a selection was new for me. Shure gonne use that! I'm always in doubt how to control black and white tones, or witch sliders to use. Is it the best to use Alt+black/white, or to use the panel colourcurve, or just use the contrastslider in main panel? Thnx. Michael

Another video that I'm walking away from learning something new. I've fallen in love with the new masking tools LR added in, however the one struggle that I continue to face is contrast. I also do the same background change from white to black to see how my image looks, yet my contrast still seems to be overdone at times. Any advice in regards to how you tackle second guessing this tool?

Excellent tutorial Michael! Thanks for the hints you gave us. Exposure blending is always almos impossible to do! And the results ar less than awful! I have bought lots of luminosity masks tools like Lumenzia, Raya Pro, TK8 panel and pretty much with any of those, the results are horrible and the quality picture ends up being impossible to use. Any advice on how to get better results while taking pictures for later do the post processing wiht some of those tools?

Hello Michael, something I struggle with is whether to use clarity in the sky. Many say, clouds are soft and fluffy and should not be touched whilst others routinely sharpen that area. I am inclined not to sharpen or use of clarity. Not being an expert, I normally take a general approach. Just wondered if you have any views on this subject...

A neat trick in lightroom, if you're using mac, hold shift and double click on whites, then repeat on blacks. Doing this almost always fixes the exposure of your image without having to use the exposure slider. Obviously depending on the image you might have to make a few minor adjustments the whites and blacks as needed, but overall it works wonders.

Maybe one issue that I am coming back to is overexposed water in sunset seascapes. You cant really blend them in due to separate waves motion (or exposure times) or recover the highlights if they are blown. Its really cumbersome as long as the sun is not yet really close to the horizon. Maybe you have a trick for that.

Helpful video…in a couple of cases, using intersect would probably be easier rather than using erase? For instance if you want a gradual darkening of the sky, use a graduated filter plus intersect with sky…

I have a problem with masking and the intersect when using the luminosity, the effected area goes gray and muddy. Also adjusting the colour when using the brush, the colour doesn’t just effect the brushed part?

I definitely struggle the most with contrast depth. Turning up the contrast changes the balance between the whites and the blacks and makes it too punchy. Bringing up the dehaze too far makes everything unrealistically dark in the shadows. I tend to find my images left needing more black white separation but not sure how to get it without blowing one or the other out
