What editing program are you using for your self tapes?

I use VSDC Free video editor, easy in use and great quality!

I've been using Microsoft movie maker. I like the cropping feature on OpenShot though, useful for the slate, as you demonstrated. I like your order of: scene-slate-full body shot. Thanks for video.
@ActingCareerCenter4 жыл бұрын
VEGAS Movie Studio is my primary video editor for PC. It costs about $50 - $80. OpenShot can do just about everything VEGAS can (for audition videos) but some things are just easier to do in VEGAS.

Hey Kurt I hope all is well!! I’m an actor as well and I use the canon 80d what is the best lens to use?? Is the 50mm a good one?
@ActingCareerCenter4 жыл бұрын
I prefer to use a zoom lens with my 80D, that way I can do the close up for the audition and zoom out for a full body slate without changing lenses. The kit lense 18-55mm lens actually works great.

Hi Kurt I’m a new subscriber to your channel and want to say , your video’s are superb . Keep up the good work . I also have a question if you have time to answer it . I’m new to self taping and not a wiz kip on editing and equipment. I’m wondering if editing videos from a cannon camera to iPad is possible or would you recommend a laptop or a pc . iPads don’t seem to have any USB ports . So I’m thinking a laptop could be an very good addition and better option than an iPad . and perhaps making the process of making self tapes a bit easier . What would you recommend ? Any other thoughts you have would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance and look forward to seeing you on set ! 😀

I've never owned an iPad so I can't tell you from experience, unfortunately. I always edit on a laptop. I think it's pretty easy that way.

Hi Kurt - I love your videos! You're so specific & clear, not to mention knowledgeable (& a fabulous actor!). I followed your instructions to a T & have been able to edit my auditions easily in OpenShot. Thanks so much! However - this weekend, I went to edit a self-taped audition & regrettably, updated the program. I say regrettably because in the updated version they've eliminated CROP & other features & I couldn't figure out how to crop or trim now!!! I eventually had to go to Filmora & stumble through that, which at least had properties written in plain English instead of the buzz words that OpenShot now has. Could you do an updated video on OpenShot for poor un-techie actors like me? Thanks in advance.
@ActingCareerCenter3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, I only showed OpenShot as an example of free editing software. It's not the editor that I normally use (Vegas Movie Studio). You might be able to find another tutorial here on KZbin.

Hey Kurt, thank you for this great editing tutorial.im just wondering if there's an option for after editing the background if there's a way to have the video back to horizontal? I've noticed the video is now vertical when you edited it. Tnx

Is it fine if I use a white backdrop or should I rather use a curtain or as you said a grey/blu one? Also, It's okay if I sit down while I'm saying my lines during the videotape? Thank you for the attention❤️
@ActingCareerCenter4 жыл бұрын
If it isn't distracting and it makes you look good, any backdrop will work. I have used white in the past, mostly for commercial auditions. These days, I use gray for just about everything. Sitting down is fine just be aware that sometimes our energy is lower when we sit. Be careful that doesn't affect your audition.

Just curious...isn't that the wrong order for those clips? Wouldn't you have your slate first? Then the audition, then the full body? And if not, why not?
@ActingCareerCenter4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the casting director. There is no universal rule. When I was in Ohio and taping mostly for commercials, they wanted the slate in the beginning. Now that I am in Atlanta and 90% of my tapes are for film and TV, they either want the slate at the end or in a separate file entirely. I have yet to encounter a film/TV self tape audition where they wanted the slate in the beginning.

Depends on the size of the file and if the person you are sending it to needs it to be below a certain threshold. Most of my audition videos don't need to be compressed if I am uploading to Actors Access. In the case that I do need to compress, I used Handbrake.

I'm new at this so I don't have an editing program. Does it matter what the self-tape is recorded on (i.e., cell phone)? Also, can the finished tape be sent by WeTransfer from OpenShot?
@ActingCareerCenter4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter what you use to record as long as you copy the videos onto your computer after recording. Sending the final video with WeTransfer is a separate process. It has nothing to do with OpenShot. After you finish editing your audition in OpenShot, you save the final video onto your computer. Then you go to the WeTransfer website and send it wherever it needs to go. I don't know if it will help or not but let me try an analogy. Let's say I want to bake a cake and send it to you. OpenShot would be the oven and WeTransfer would be the deliver service. It doesn't matter what bowl I used to mix the ingredients (doesn't matter what I use to record the video), as long as I put the final mix into a baking dish and into the oven. Once I'm done baking (editing), I take the cake out of the oven and use a delivery service (WeTransfer) to send it to you. I hope that makes sense. I've never baked a cake in my life 🤣

Does the audition or slate need to go first or does it not matter?
@ActingCareerCenter3 жыл бұрын
every casting director is different and will have different preferences. Follow the audition instructions that you get with the audition. Some casting directors prefer the slate in the beginning and other prefer at the end. Some also prefer the slate in a separated file altogether.
