Got my first bike a week and a half ago. I was very slow on starts keeping to the MSF "slowly release clutch and then apply throttle when you start to roll." Starting slow does not make other drivers in Brooklyn happy. Tried the technique in the video and didn't stall or have cars up my a** when the light turned green. My confidence also shot up without the fear of stalling at the light. Thanks. Now time to absorb the other material!

This is the most important point. If you are two seconds late on the start, nothing serious happpens in 99.99% instances. If you dont spot the idiot blowing through the lights at 50mph and he hits you, your chances to stay alive are poor.

Jumping into intersections is always a bad idea. Pick a lane coming out of your lane split, get ahead of that car but dont jump into an intersection! It always looks clear until IT ISNT. Dont hang out in the intersection on a left turn either. Cool skill, but bad advice.

Love your videos and I always learn something new. Being in Florida where lane splitting is illegal, this isn't an issue. Also in Florida and I realize you just said it, the morons here constantly run red lights. I wait at least 2 seconds before I proceed on a green light and even with that i was almost wiped out about a year ago when a girl ran a red light about 3 seconds after my light was green, then yelled at me.....complete assholes in Florida. You're sooo lucky to be in California.

I’m learning how to ride a motorcycle late in my 30s, and taking of at intersections and steep hills kinda scares me. Sometimes I do it right, sometimes I don’t and frustration gets me precisely because of my safety, but your videos are very helpful in gaining confidence, which is one of the most important things.

My goodness... Taking off like that might actually encourage people to race you at the next intersection. I ride daily too (and lanesplit everywhere) but I only try to get a jumpstart to pick a lane, mostly not to annoy people. Annoyed drivers are the most dangerous in my experience.

Benjamin Smith no offense but I can’t tell if ur being sarcastic or just giving stupid advice no way should u ever ride or stop at a light lane splitting or completely alone in the middle of a lane on a motorcycle that’s literally the place with the least escape routes, the worst line of sight , the least visible and not to mention 90 percent of the highway dubree and road hazards will be caked up along the middle of lanes and in the rain most hydroplane problem areas are in the middle of the lanes .. I hope everyone understands that and practices staying on the the sides of lanes with the least hazards or if both have hazards the least deadly or less traffic or the side without exits or turn outs .

Good advice. May I add one piece myself? When stopping at a red light, pull all the way over the the side of the lane (if going straight over) so that any vehicle NOT stopping at the red light does not kill you. This applies to stop signs and give way junctions, too. I have had this happen. I stopped at a red light knowing that a big truck was right behind me and we were both going quickly. I pulled over to the very edge of the road and the truck - some 20 to 30 thousand kilos of it - sailed through the red light. It would have killed me for certain. It was inches away. Here in Japan almost all (I can confidently say more than 99%) of truck drivers are courteous and safe, and the speed limits are lower than in Europe / the UK, but every so often.... In another comment below, someone mentioned 'right of way'. Cyclists here of all ages very frequently assume that 'right of way' and 'the physics related to stopping a car' are one and the same. I have seen many cars hit careless and daydreaming cyclists on crossings/at junctions. Also cyclists here often ride on the wrong side of the road, especially school children. As many have said, assume that the car drivers are careless and vengeful and that they want to hurt you, even though in most cases that is not true. I like this guy's presentation style.

If people don't know to check cross traffic and are just taking off like a mad men...that's on them. I can't explain every single little detail...my videos would be 3 hours long. And even I don't mention something, it's all just what I do, each person is responsible for their own safety.

The point you're skipping is that once you launch with your technique you have just committed yourself to be in the middle of the intersection in the next half second. You can check for cross traffic 1000 times and be right 1000 times. But the day will come when because of one thing or another (slight curve in the cross street, some trees obstructing a complete view, parked cars, whatever) you just didn't see another bike or maybe a low sport car like a Miata running the red light at high speed. On that 1001 time you are dead.

That´s what it happened to me. Someone passed the red light and I can´t stop in time. All I could do was to try to pass (zig-zag) behind the car and I hit with the right-hand brake the tail light of the car. I´m recovering from my left patella injury. Regards.

I always pull up hard to the drivers side in stopped traffic, one day the car coming up from behind rear ended the car in front of me if I wasn't hard over I would have been crushed. But only lately is it law to split traffic in Washington state. But you don't have to try as hard as you on a gsxr 1000

I don't think that law passed. And the law they were pushing was pretty weak. It only applied on divided highways when traffic was going under 10mph and the motorcyclist could do no more than 5 mph over what traffic was doing or something similar. Probably wise to introduce it like that and give people a chance to get used to it before opening it up for other streets.

If I may be permitted: At the intersection as you described, you managed to lane-share to the front, BUT you stay in-between the cars until you take off. I personally prefer moving directly in front of a car (either side - does not matter) even though I may be encroaching a little into the intersection, but of course out of the way of traffic still. Pedestrians can walk around me. That way, I "own" the lane and I leave the traffic behind me in the dust on take off (having of course made sure that the intersection is safe to enter and cross after green lights). Why do you prefer instead to remain in-between the cars after lane-sharing to the front?

Most of the time the cars are all the way up to the stop line or cross walk, and it's illegal to have any part of your car in the crosswalk.

Good stuff Eddie, I was hit once because of not getting out fast enough or maybe the car behind me just getting ahead of himself. Fun thing is I ended up sort of drifting forward with my bike turned like 70 degrees to the left and I don't know how I did it but my reaction was to hit the throttle really hard while in first gear and somehow managed to turn the bike the right way and stay on both wheels. Just had a tiny bruise on my right leg but every time I think about this, it could've been really bad for me D:

I love this technique. I do this all the time too. I live in Thailand at the moment where pretty much anything goes. I do it for the exact same reason you do it. And if you think drivers are bad there come to Thailand. If I see a Thai on a bike I feel I am somewhat safe, If I see a Thai in a car I am scared. If I see a foreigner on a bike I feel scared, if I see a foreigner in a car I feel somewhat safe. But here you own the space you occupy only, you can't feel safe around you at all. I laugh at all the western people who drive here and lose their cool if someone invades their space lol. There are so many people on the roads here that this is just how it works. If people didn't drive like this you would never get to where you are going just because of the volume of vehicles. You have to be on your guard 100% of the time on public roads here.

Yeah I've ridden in Thailand, it's intense. I even went down into Phuket a few times. There's an amazing twisty mountain road up in Khao Sok national park, though if you want to ride it like the tail of the dragon, you'll need some luck to not get stuck behind a slower vehicle.

HUMMMM, I haven't driven that section of road in Khao Sok National Park but I am sure it is good. There is so much good riding here in Thailand but yes there is a lot of traffic and you have to be very careful when overtaking. I have driven in Phuket many times. I love the section of road between Surin Beach and Patong Beach, amazing quick twisties with the ocean and the ocean breeze on your side, doesn't get better than that. I also like the trip from Patong Beach to the big Buddah, mostly for the scenery on this one and not the road.

Trying to be positive, but this is the silliest thing I’ve seen on KZbin. Bikes 9 times out of 10 will be faster than your average car. There is no need to preload the engine like this, you could easily go just as fast clutching out and giving the bike gas.

Over here in Houston, we have a lot of stupid drivers that like to pass red lights all the time. Doing that here will mean bad news for the rider. Yes, but he covered that "once the road is clear". A lot of people calling this poor guy out for trying to help others over for the look left and right, and yes, people in Cali run reds all the time, hence the "once the road is clear", you launch. Common sense is not so common anymore... Riding on the streets for 25 years, riding moto for 45 years. I thought I knew everything, so I decided to test my abilities and hit a racetrack. Thats where I found out how fast I wasnt! Learned more in 1 day at the track than 5 years of weekend riding. Now 56 track days in 3 yrs, the street scares me even more than before. But i know my abilities and my bikes as well, so I am more likely than ever to avoid the idiot moves you do when you "think" you know how to ride.

I would never jump out ahead of those cars as you suggest at 1:57. Those cars are also shields for you when crossing that intersection. I'd say your more at risk jumping into the intersection than moving at the same pace as the cars flanking you on either side. Get through the intersection then jump ahead. There are two intersections within two miles from my house that are notorious for having vehicles t-boned by cars running yellow/red lights. Many of these accidents in the past 20 years have been fatal. Your videos are good, and I agree with you 99% of the time, but this time I think you've given some bad advice.

Brilliant tip. Whenever I filter / lane split and go to the front at traffic lights I always sort of cut across the car at the front at a bit of an angle so they can't go anywhere even if they wanted to, and then if there's time I make eye contact with them or at least look at them in the mirror. Some might say that some people might not like how you've pushed in and cut them off but it's ok, they can't go anywhere unless they go through you and if you're filtering in traffic you have to be able to judge what's going on because it's always a risk doing it but don't go to the front of your going to be slow and hold the cars up when it's time to go, that's not right.

Not bad advise, just not perfect.... well it’s not a perfect world. I used to bolt out from red lights, but one day I just felt like taking my time. As I began to move forward a youngster blew the red light at about 70 mph. Never saw him coming never heard him coming and would not be alive today had I moved any quicker. Now days I just sort of blend in with the traffic as we move away from the streetlight. I like your comment about staging your self at the right rear of the car in front of you then once the light turns green and they begin to move forward you can split through them after the intersection. Again not bad advice, but it is a little like playing Russian roulette.

No, it's not something for every occasion but it is something to learn. You may need to make a quick decision and need to convert from a normal start to a fast one. So sitting there with the clutch held and the throttle cracked open is perhaps not the best way to do it. But do learn how to do a fast one with full control.

Good video! Talking about not knowing what the cars around you are going to do..... 2 years ago, I stopped at a stop light and while sitting there the left lane (turn lane) light turned green and the lady behind me (in the right lane) decided it was time to go and ran right into me! Bike and I hit the ground, broke a mirror and damaged my rear fender and I got a hell of a bruise on my ankle. You never know is right!

In my younger days I used an egg to deal with a stubborn tailgater. The tailgater HAS to stop, because windscreen wipers make it worse. I now use hand motions and ride zig-zag in the lane. That usually works.

I've been riding for over 50 years and have taken over 25 different instructional riding courses as well as a several professional racing instruction classes and have over 2 million miles in the saddle. You'll use "your technique" for awhile until you end end up killing yourself because of it.....the best thing you said is, "...I'm not telling you what to do, this is what I do..." NO riding instructor ANYWHERE will ever tell you that what you're doing is o.k. ........wrong as the day is long!!!

I disagree with almost every advise given in this video. If you stop behind a car, dont do it towards the middle of the road as people tend to not see you there. Instead claim your space on the lane and leave plenty space in front of you to escape when needed. And then the revving of the bike.. this is basically saying, i want to race you! Also, taking off this ridiculously fast will some day crash you into a car that thinks its oke to run the first second of a red light, which is see almost daily. So, just take off faster, but not like Rossi in GP.

Beginner Rider here I just came back from practicing around my neighborhood. A car behind me tried to overtake me as soon as I left the stop sign because I’m not skilled enough to upshift fast enough from a complete STOP. I ended up turning to another street ahead, and I’m 9/10 certain that I hear shouting from the car as it pass me by. If this was out in the city, I know it could’ve been much worse. Dude you just made me more afraid to ride my motorcycle.... Just because lane splitting is legal doesn't mean you should take advantage of it, there is a good and not-so-good time to take advantage of that. I'm not sure I would want to park myself in between two cars at a traffic light and then throttle it once the light turns green as there may be somebody coming from your left or your right cheating the yellow light. You're better off parking behind a car and give yourself Buffer room to escape if a car behind you appears to not be stopping...

Hi buds! Just wanted to let you know I was at an intersection today with a kid on a hot rod bike and watched him do exactly what you're talking about - tried to get away fast and stalled it! The bike behind him almost ran into him. Your vid jumped into my head immediately!! Earlier in the day up by Julian, saw a guy on a Harley try to make a simple left turn, oversteer, stall and almost dump the bike in the street. Can't put enough emphasis on training, keep up the good work!!

Had my very first motorcycle lesson today on a Honda 600 Hornet. Have not ridden a bike with gears since I was a teenager about 15 years ago (and that was like a 50cc). Half of the 1.5 hour lesson was exercises requiring launching the bike. Shit was wild (launch start, up to 2nd then 3rd on a 50 meter stretch within 5.5 seconds of which I did about 3.9 at best). I see people learning on KZbin and the things I was asked to do right off the bat were things I see people advancing to after many, many times on a parking lot.. or things they do not ever attempt before being told they know how to ride a bike. However, my first lesson was today (Monday), and my second one will be on Friday. Next Tuesday is my test at the ministry of transport. So my teacher (who booked it) does not really have a lot of choice but to get me there fast either. So the whole 1.5 hours today were drills without pause (man was my clutch hand tired at the end). We practiced at the ministry testing area today, and next lesson I am expected to drive to the place through the city from the school.. then go for a 2 hour session. Hopefully I don't miss anything that fails me on the test (all exercises went well today, no issues with creeping on a straight line, through cones or anything) and within a week I will have my unlimited license. With that said, I know I will be scared to death to go out on my own after such a short stint of training.

Everything you said is absolutely correct. I can't tell you how many times I'm looking in my mirrors and see some jackpot literally a foot or two behind me at a light. I usually give a good rev with my R1. I've been riding all my life. Though lane splitting is not legal in Texas. I always stop as close and in-between the cars ahead of me at traffic lights. I also prefer to ride in the left lane as people are either turning into or out of side streets and parking lot's. And yes people love running red lights in Texas so make sure it's clear and safe before you go. But go. I live in Houston TX . We made the worse drivers in America three years in a row. So... If traveling through Houston. Be extra cognizant of traffic around you. Shinny side up. Thumbs up for the vid.

This was super entertaining and awesome. I've been unable to ride my bike because I was 65 miles away from my house on a twisty road 2 saturdays ago when my front break pads decided to completely give out.. Yes I should've checked them before my ride, but they were working fine before my ride so I wasn't worried about it. I somehow got home safely and havent ridden my bike since, and I don't plan to until I install my new quality brake pads, and I also bought quality steel braided brake lines for my front and rear to ensure this doesn't happen again. However I am currently going through some major riding withdrawals while I wait for my new stuff to come in and am doing constant research on improving my riding ability, awareness and overall smarts. I literally cannot wait to fire up my bike, feel the brakes, listen to my exhaust (love the sound of it) and try out everything I'm learning. Perhaps it's good that I'm getting this time away from the bike to learn new things to try out by watching all accessible videos of yours. Thanks

@@MotoJitsu Sorry I was tired when I wrote this. I meant my brake line gave out, because I immediately got low on brake fluid, but I also have hardly any brake pads left as well. When I got home, my dad told me I had pretty much nothing there. I ride a 2006 cbr600 and I cant remember the last time I've changed either of those things out. I just started riding 2 years ago, 17 years old(18 on friday), and I'm still figuring everything out. I apologize for any confusion.
