For those beginners and having problem to navigate your friction zone. Heres my tip. Its reall simple. Think of it as a clock. The whole clutch lever is 9-12 o clock. Your friction zone would be somewhere around 10-11 oclock or 10.5 to 11.5 o clock. If you go all the way to 12 and you dont have enough speed yet chances are you will stall. Every bike is different but those are the most sweet spots of frition zone.

All good advice. A couple of things I can add... 1) Practice in the car park: starting in 1st, quickly moving to second gear/20 mph, then slowing again and stopping, selecting gear back to 1st, completely stopped with feet down and ready to start again. Repeat. This to me the real traffic pattern practice routine - you need to get to second quickly. 2) Not a fan of holding the rear brake with light throttle except for starting on hills. Since many inexperienced riders will start burning out clutches before gaining mastery of this 3) Don't panic if a bug gets in your helmet - they absolutely will. Be sure to use hazard lights (if you need to) then always pull over, select neutral, remove and inspect helmet completely before starting again - those bugs tend to linger inside;

Finding the friction zone is much easier when you use two fingers. The other fingers act as a stopper to pulling the clutch lever so far that you have a super high amount of deadzone before the bike takes off. Makes it less of a guessing game it’s clutch fully activated when stopped in gear and I start to let that out and the slightest movement is going to cause the bike to move. That’s what I do.🤷🏼♂️

Thanks for the tips, brother. Never rode a motorcycle, but I just built a motorized bike. I'm going to see if this will work for me to come off a dead stop without having to pedal the bike every time. It'll probably help me start it easier, too, because I didn't realize how short that range of motion is from engaged to not engaged It was really helpful that you are willing to stall your bike out to show how everything is working instead of just saying the words. Same thing with cars, you must learn how to keep your car on an incline using the deadzone so you take off without staling or rolling back after you release the brake. In really big inclines you hold the handbrake with the button pressed and car to deadzone and you just release the handbrake to go. Same applies to bikes as well and pretty much all the clutch using machines.

So before I got a motorcycle that when you pulled in the clutch all the way the friction zone was immediate when you let it out I had this problem, and wondered why the levers had the extra space to where you could pull all the way in. why doesn’t the lever pull just stop just pasted the end of the friction zone?
@annastebelskyj5802 ай бұрын
Stupid KZbin doesn't properly notify of replies to comments anymore, but I can answer your question. The excess take-up in the lever is to account for slop. As the cable gets used, it stretches. You need that additional space in order to fully disengage the clutch until you have the opportunity to adjust the take-up at the cable head (and for a really worn out cable, at the clutch itself, as well). Check your maintenance manual for how much excess take-up you're supposed to have, so you can adjust it correctly.
@teddysurf2 ай бұрын
@@annastebelskyj580 first thank you for the reply. I see your point and understand it. The problem for me is the first motorcycle I ever bought, The friction zone was at the very end of the lever pull. So until I learned you didn’t have to pull the clutch in all the way lol it was like a count of one 1000 two 1000 three 1000 until I actually got going. all I’m saying is it would be nice if adjustable levers adjusted both ways. you refer to the screen often and it's great to have but in MSF they constantly tell us to keep our eyes forward and off the odometer. It's dangerous to get beginners in the habit of constantly checking their odometer for gear. it's seconds taken away from the important stuff which is situation awareness. Instead I would tell beginners to bottom out their shift lever till they hit first gear and get used to feeling it with their foot rather than looking at the screen.

Just find the friction zone then apply throttle, you'll be able to tell when you're around the friction zone when the rpms drop. Practice to gauge where the zone begins and ends, and apply throttle in the middle. Or like he says, if you can tell precisely when you're about to move and you don't see anything that'll stop you, keep it in the friction zone and bring the revs up a little, holding it around 2500-3000 rpm and hold on your rear brake. As you're getting ready to move, slowly release the rear brake in a smooth manner

7:10 right here I'll actually say for red lights and stuff just go into N dont hold ur clutch while in first the whole time, it's not good for ur bike and will tire out ur hand too 9:27 i also get ur point here but that will fuck up ur clutch over time so i wouldn't do that too often since u are already in the friction zone. I'd pretty much do the exact same thing without being in the friction zone the whole time. So revs, rear break, clutch out but not in the friction zone and when u want to go just let ur clutch out that half cm to get going 11:50 this is what i'd to just practice over and over and maybe practice going slow too, like walking speed where u give it a bit of revs and hold it in the friction zone. After all it's all just feel and muscle memory

Can you explain how holding in the clutch at a light is not good for the bike?
@motorcyclifter7 ай бұрын
@maymax0076 It is NOT GOOD to stop at neutral. If someone were to be driving behind you and you notice they dont stop it will take you LONGER to take off in an emergency situation. Stopping at Neutral in a common fallacy in this community and it is 100% NOT WORTH THE RISK. Having a motorcycle will be expensive, dangerous, and a investment in its own right. If youre too concern with wearing out your clutch, tired hands, and saving on repairs rather than being ready to take off at a moments notice and saving your own life in case of an emergency, then dont ride a motorcycle. Besides, I know plenty of guys that take care of their bike and never stop in neutral and their clutch and bikes are completely fine. This is just a common misconception.

This guy is right. At long red lights always go into neutral and stay on the far left or right of the lane you are in and preferably be in front of a car. At stop signs you can stop in first gear no problem. It's basically the same principles as driving a manual car, whenever you come to a red light always shift into neutral and foot of the clutch. You will wear out the cable and your clutch wayyy faster doing what you said in the video (trust me I know). Also it's not good to be in the friction zone that long. You will just burn up your clutch even tho it does get lubricated. The 3-4k revs shown in the vid are a little too high and you should learn to start the bike at around 2k revs.
