Very impressive revival. I just battled a huge staghorn algae problem (still am lol) and I used hydrogen peroxide and it is taking time. Even with only bottom feeders and amanos it is slowly running its course. At first I was worried for you but it made me realize that it just takes time. Amazing aquascape

Thanks! If you don’t have any snails, give that a shot. You have them in there forever, but they do keep things clean.

@@ssaquascapes Will try that soon. Any recommendations? I looked at the Red Racer Nerite snails. I was worried that they might be too flashy but it is a 50gal and watching your video it made me realize that they will distribute around and I prob wont see them lol
@ssaquascapes6 ай бұрын
@mattblzd nerite snails won’t multiply in freshwater but they don’t do as good a job in my opinion. If you get Ramshorn snails like in the video get blue or pink/red ones. Your local fish store will most likely buy your over stock adults once they start breeding. A little extra cash flow and snails at the ready. Ramshorn snails are savagely hungry and keep my tanks clean.

Have you ever tried a UV filter for that algae build-up? I got a new UV filter last year, this time I bought a Fluval brand...it has a special type of UV lamp that runs cool and has a life-span of over 20,000 hours. Since I've been using UV filters, I've never had much of a problem with algae. My fish have also never got Ich since I've been using UV filters. From what I've read, the protazoa that causes Ich is affected by the UV...even the ones that don't die from it, have their DNA screwed up so they can't reproduce. Their life-span is very short, so they never have a chance to multiply to the point where they can infect fish.

I haven’t. I’ve been lucky enough to have never encountered a Ich infection in my fish. As far as controlling algae, I am one of those weird people that think a little algae is a sign of a healthy ecosystem, but I try to limit the amount. I notoriously over feed and do very few water changes. So this is my main problem. I know UV light would help, especially with my green algae struggles in my 40G. But I like to do it the hard way!🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for the suggestions and guidance.

@@ssaquascapes That hydrogen peroxide never bothers your fish at all?

@@ssaquascapes I once got an ich infection in fish after putting some dragon rock in my aquarium. I had put nothing else new in my tank other than that dragon rock...and I had rinsed it real good beforehand with warm water and a scrub brush. A guy online told me to boil anything I put in my tank...including driftwood. I remember him telling me he got one of those huge pots that people get for deep-frying a turkey in oil...but he used his for boiling driftwood that was too long for a normal pot...even if he had to boil one side and then flip it and boil the other side. I suppose it makes good sense, boiling kills all microbes. And it's also a real easy way to totally clean out dragon rock with zero scrubbing.

@@ssaquascapes What brands of food do you feed your fish...what brands would you suggest?
@ssaquascapes5 ай бұрын
Nope. Hydrogen peroxide goes inert after a few minutes of exposure to air or water. As long as you stay at a ratio of 1 ml per gallon of water it should not effect your livestock. When I spray it on surfaces as you saw in this video I make sure to allow sufficient contact time with air and start filling water immediately to dissipate any peroxide that might be in the water column.

Awesome! They may come in looking a little rough in the shell and stuff. Typical of a breeder. Just keep them in hard water for their shells (tap) and feed them well. They will grow new beautiful shells over time. Happy snail breeding to ya!🤘

@@ssaquascapes I wasn't sure which one to order from. I just picked one that the photo didn't show any other color but blue. I already have a snail free tank just for them. I'm hoping they will multiply enough so I can present a larger group to my daughter at Christmas. I only ordered 10.

If there is not enough algae, can the snails start eating the plants and destroy them?
@ssaquascapes6 ай бұрын
Ramshorn snails will eat any dead or yellowing leaves of plants but won’t attack healthily plants. I feed them algae wafers now that the tank is clean and the also scavenge any food missed by the fish.
