I love my 2014 Ram 1500.. the ONLY thing I don't (didn't) like is the lack of Carplay. It has this great big 8.4 inch screen but no smart phone integration beyond blue tooth.. until now.
Upgraded to a 2018 Ram stereo - This video takes you step by step through the update process and should be nearly identical for any Mopar vehicle with the 8.4" screen
My kit came with the radio, upgraded USB hub and the hub wiring adapter. The wiring adapter is the one thing I have not been able to source independently - the Hub itself is MOPAR part# 5XG28DX9AD

Hey I have a Dodge Durango and am trying to do the same thing. Do you think you could have done the same thing getting the screen and usb cheaper used or from dealer instead of spending a lot of money for the kit. Or is there something different in the kit that makes it that you have to buy it so it makes it compatible for older models?
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 3 жыл бұрын
Good Evening! The radio itself is plug and play but there are a few catches.. 1 - You need the antitheft unlock code or the VIN from the vehicle your replacement came out of. Be careful buying from a yard or Ebay if they can't supply that because it can be a pain to get (at least I've been told) 2 -The USB module required doesn't have the same plug so if you're not using a kit you'd have to make an adapter if you want to use the stock wiring to the center console. Could it be done cheaper with some hassle? Absolutely. You just may have to jump through a few hoops.

@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 2 жыл бұрын
The only place I know that provides this as a business is infotainment.com. Otherwise what you’re looking for is a “Uconnect 8.4 UAQ” radio out of a 2018+ Chrysler/dodge/jeep. The part number for the USB port is in some of the previous comments and available through MOPAR and online. The only piece that I can’t find separate from a kit is the wire adapter for the hub but I suspect it’s just changing plug type as it was a short in-line thing so it should be easy enough to figure out. If you find somebody on eBay or whatever selling the radio as a “android auto/CarPlay” upgrade they should be including the wire, hub and radio. Aside from the usb hub it’s plug and play for the stereo itself with the caveat about onscreen controls for the seats and steering wheel heaters that I mentioned in the video

@AskDIYDad

I believe on yours they would work - the problem with them not working without an adapter was just on the 2014 Rams like mine. If I'm wrong about that though, YES - the physical buttons continue to work, the onscreen display of the status works, and they still come on automatically with remote start. Just the on-screen buttons for on/off do not work

You need three things with 1 optional extra: 1 - Uconnect 8.4 Stereo from 2018-2020 (UAS is without built in navigation (can still use nav through iPhone or Android, UAQ includes built in nav) 2 - Upgraded USB Hub 5XG28DX9AD (www.mymoparparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-charging-port-usb-5xg28dx9ad) 3 - Wiring adapter for USB Hub - this is the only thing I can't find independently - you would have to make it, but it's not massively complicated 4 - Wiring harness adapter for 2013/2014 Ram (completely optional, enables stereo screen controls of heated steering wheel and seats - remote start auto-enable still works without it as do the physical buttons on the dash)

@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what options exist that would be fully compatible, sorry. I can say on my Ram that you can't actually see the gap alongside the USB port in the center console without a lot of effort from the normal seating position of either the driver or passenger. You really have to be looking for it.. On a Durango or something where the USB port is mounted on the dash this would be more obvious, but I believe there may be other USB ports available for those vehicles from MOPAR that would not have the gap.

Thank you for the kind words! I researched forums and found infotainment.com who sells a kit - so I knew it had to be possible. The kit I bought was from an Ebay seller that is no longer in business, I believe I paid somewhere around $900 for it but that was quite some time ago. Current kits seem to be selling for $1200-$1600 because everything is just generally more expensive now. My understanding is that the only real difference for the Durango vs the Ram is the USB hub since yours is embedded in the dash not the armrest. Infotainment.com has them if you want a more expensive sure thing - otherwise i would search for things like 8.4 Carplay Upgrade or UAQ Carplay. Just make sure that the seller is providing the radio, the USB hub and the USB hub adapter cable because that cable is impossible to find outside of the kits. clearly the kit providers have a source but I haven't even been able to figure out how to make one myself..

I have been wanting to do this for a while in my 2016 Dodge Charger, but initially was told (short of crappy modular that give half the abilities) I would need to buy a new radio that was around $2,500. The link you provided to someone else no longer works. I found several similar in ebay, but am worried I am going to buy the wrong thing. I currently have nav and 8.4 uconnect, just want the upgrade and the correct module/adaptors. I see prices from $1,800 down to $600 and I know some of these can't be right. Any idea what I should search for besides UAQ? specifically for the "adapters" I will need?
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 2 жыл бұрын
Good day! The UAQ is the designator that specifies a radio with built in Navigation. So an 8.4 UAQ stereo from a 2018+ should get you the main piece. If you find a seller claiming an upgrade kit they will include the hub and the wire adapter for it. I’m pretty sure the wire adapter is just changing plug type since it’s a short inline thing. The usb hub part number is in the earlier comments but I’m not 100% sure that the charger uses the same hub as the Ram. I’d suggest hitting a charger-specific owner forum.. guaranteed you’ll find threads about this upgrade

@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have the part numbers for the radio (I believe it changes based on Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep) but what you need is the UConnect 8.4" Stereo from a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep with code UAQ or UAS (UAQ has factory nav, UAS does not but would still enable it via Carplay or Android Auto) The USB hub for a Ram is MOPAR part# 5XG28DX9AD The other thing you will need is a cable adapter for the new hub, I believe it uses a different plug. I've been tempted to do a video on making this cable but haven't had the time. Most of the "kits" you would find on Ebay or at Infotainment.com would include the stereo, hub, and adapter. The kits are pricey, but the end result is an integrated simple solution. Have used mine for almost 2 years without a single problem.

Hi Bob! The tricky part of the update is the little wiring adapter you need for the USB hub update that isn't sold anywhere that I can find independently. Your best bet is to look for somebody providing the update as a kit - infotainment.com has them but they're a bit on the pricey side. I sourced mine on Ebay (my seller is no longer in business however) The stereo is a Uconnect 8.4" UAQ or UAS. UAQ is the one with the factory navigation, UAS is usually cheaper without factory nav (which you won't need if you are planning to use Android Auto or Carplay) Search terms that seem to work for folks are things like "8.4 UAQ Carplay" and "Carplay Upgrade" or "Uconnect Carplay" Look for a seller selling the stereo AND the upgraded USB hub and message to confirm they have the adapter cable for the hub and the unlock code for the stereo.

@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 3 жыл бұрын
My kit was purchased through a salvage dealer on Ebay. Infotainment.com provides kits that are highly rated but cost a bit more. The individual parts for the stereo and USB hub are pretty easy to come by, and the stereo head unit itself is plug and play with no adapters needed for it's main functions - it's the wiring adapter for the updated USB hub and the adapter for the 2013'ish Ram to enable the onscreen controls for the heated seats and steering wheel that are a bit harder to come up with if you don't go with a "kit" solution.

You need three things with 1 optional extra: 1 - Uconnect 8.4 Stereo from 2018-2020 (UAQ includes built in nav) 2 - Upgraded USB Hub 5XG28DX9AD (www.mymoparparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-charging-port-usb-5xg28dx9ad) 3 - Wiring adapter for USB Hub - this is the only thing I can't find independently - you would have to make it, but it's not massively complicated 4 - Wiring harness adapter for 2013/2014 Ram (completely optional, enables stereo controls of heated steering wheel and seats - remote start auto-enable still works without it as do the physical buttons on the dash)

Hey have recently got a 2017 Ram 1500 Laramie, I have been searching for several weeks now. I know in order to have car play you have to have the 4c Uconnect. I know you got yours through EBay. Does the seller have anymore kits? Is there any other way besides infotainment because that’s pretty steep. Would you recommend going to a junkyard and just picking up a 2018 radio and doing it that way? Thanks -Ty
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 3 жыл бұрын
You need a Uconnect 8.4" UAS or UAQ stereo. My seller doesn't have any kits up currently. UAS is the cheaper option as it doesn't have built-in GPS (which you don't need if you're running Carplay). I would definitely call around to local salvage options, you might get lucky! The problem is that you need one from 2018+ so options will be limited. If you piece this together I believe you will need to get the updated MOPAR USB Hub to enable the data connection necessary for Carplay as well. I have posted the part number in previous comments Best of luck!

@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 3 жыл бұрын
@@tywells1349 It's completely painless. My truck is a 2014 so I technically would have needed an adapter if I cared about the on-screen controls for the heated seats or steering wheel. I chose to ignore that since the physical buttons work fine (in a 2017 you won't have that issue). The only adapter you may need is for the USB hub itself. There was a small wiring dongle with mine that allowed the stock plug to fit the new harness.. I'm not sure if you will need that or not. It was a homemade thing that was included in my kit so I don't have a part number to point you to.

Unfortunately the place I purchased my upgrade from didn’t survive Covid. The radio is an 8.4 UAQ or UAS radio from a 2018+ Ram/Chrysler/Dodge. There are many part numbers.. usb hub is model specific but the hardest part is the hub needs a small wiring adapter cable that I have been unable to independently source. Kits are very expensive these days (infotainment.com is a source.. there are a few others) - I would suggest maybe looking into the “Portable” standalone options for CarPlay that have come out in the last few years. It means an additional screen but they’re about 1/10 the cost..

@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Cody, The harnesses are custom things that are made by the companies that put together the kits (MOPAR doesn't provide them which is why Dodge says this upgrade cannot be done - which is not true) - I believe Infotainment.com may sell the harness for the heated seats etc independently but did not see it on their site, so you would have to check with them. To be clear, even without that harness the seats/heated wheel work just fine from the physical buttons on the dash and through auto-start, but not from the radio controls on the touchscreen. The actual USB hub is a MOPAR part (5XG28DX9AD) but you will the little cable to adapt the existing wires in the truck to the new hub. Based on the comments in this video I have been trying to find time to take apart my center console and do a quick video on how to make your own adapter for the USB hub

Hi Niko! Most of the sellers out there bundle the dongle with the "upgrade" kit to adapt the USB hub. The reason it says they are not compatible is that the plug that goes into the 2014 USB hub, and the plug that goes into the later-series one is different. Same wires, different plug. Additionally they are different sizes.. in my video you can see the little gap on the sides. Still works completely but from a MOPAR standpoint it isn't an exact fit, and therefor is not compatible. If you get a package from somebody for the upgrade advertised as "includes USB hub needed for Carplay and Android Auto" etc - that will include the part and the wiring harness that you need (the little short cable I show at about 11:05 in the video is the adapter in question). The package upgrade from Infotainment.com, for example, includes the radio, USB and adapter, all programmed to your vehicle. If you're pursuing an Ebay ad or similar as I did, I would ask the question of the seller as to what is included in the sale.
@AskDIYDad
@AskDIYDad 3 жыл бұрын
I just talked to Infotainment about whether they sell the adapter separate. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just passing it along.

It’s a factory upgrade, yes. And it has Android Auto as well as CarPlay. At the time it was around $800 - I think it’s closer to $1500 now depending on where you find it. The parts are an 8.4 UAQ or UAS radio from a 2018+ Mopar vehicle, the vehicle-specific usb hub, and a usb hub adapter cable. Kits are available is you search around a bit - the only vendor I know of offhand that predictably has them is infotainment.com. Hey Mark! Thanks for the comment - I bought, basically this (same seller) for my truck. I think the price was similar.. www.ebay.com/itm/uconnect-8-4-Uaq-Ram-Jeep-1500-2018-CarPlay-Kit-Incluided/174336503309 You need a 8.4 UAQ Stereo out of a 2018+ Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep or Ram. If you can get a Ram one you get the Ram-specific background and startup screen like mine has and your old one had. You may be able to add/customize those things but I'm not sure how to do that after the fact. The USB hub shipped in a different package that came a few days later. Seller included the antitheft code to unlock it on a scrap of paper taped to the side of the stereo (which worked). It wasn't a cheap update to do but I absolutely love it and use it all the time. I will be upgrading the backup camera to an HD camera at some point just to sharpen that up.. and may be adding a cargo cam (the radio has an input for it.. in theory if you plug into the input the option self-enables) or feed from a wireless camera on the back of our camper. IF I do that.. there will be another video :D All in all - happy that I did it. The 2014 Ram looks ridiculously modern as it is, now it has everything in the technology pack that a new truck has (except for selective displacement, which would be nice.. but harder to upgrade to).
