Hi Val - I hope that is your name - I have been watching your videos for a couple of months now, and I am so impressed with your art, but mostly with your good-hearted nature and your sincere desire to help others in the art. I have never come across someone like you who is so sincere and kind; thank you! I have been doing my own nails for a little over 6 years now. Love them! They are all so beautiful! To address what you were saying about your fear of doing a free style set for a new customer. Honey….I would do your thing! You do what you do on a free style. Then if that person is new then offer her a discount on her next purchase? I’d say if there is a good reason she doesn’t like the free style? Or doesn’t really like the free style? I wouldn’t come right out and let everyone know there’s a discount I’d do it based on review? First orders usually review? I don’t know how your thing works, I’m going to go and check out your page, I thought I had already. 🧐 Thinking tho I might not have gotten there yet. Yes! Make nails YOU like to make. Be true to yourself as well as catering to your customers. I know they would sell. I would buy sponge Bob nails with plankton. I work with kids and seniors. They would love to see those.

I can absolutely understand being intimidated by the “freestyle” orders. I think I would have to ask for some basic guidelines or at least a list of “don’t likes” or the anxiety i would feel would be a big road block for me. I think you need to make time to do some sets you want to do and consider it part of your business , for advertising your wide range of ability. Even if the set goes to no one and is only for video content and Instagram. You may then get requests for a set like those ones . “I love the plankton set…I want to order one like that” ….which would result in getting to do more of those sets that speak more to you as an artist.

You can draw characters too....!! Omg... Of course you can... I was at another press on makers site and she said for free style they give out a questionnaire. Favorite color, worst color, length, shape, event, do you like/want stones, etc, and they list a few other things. They also say they have a convo with you, to know what you want, and when you want it for. Then they create what they want to do, in those parameters. You could do that, till you really get to know your customers... Also, they have designs pre-made that customers can pick from. Like not the nails, but designs on nails... Customers says I like the snow flake blue... and then they make that one. (Did that make sense?) After awhile, you'll know your customers, from what they are always choosing, Or by things they say. Some adults love cartoons and such. I know I do - I think Winnie the Pooh is adorable on nails. I would totally wear that... I personally draw stick people, badly... and because I cannot draw, I was thinking about buying them from her. Yup, she has Pooh there. So do your Sponge Bob nails, then show them on your Instagram, that show obviously has fans, it's been on for what, 20+ years... You'll have them sold, and orders for more in no time. You dont realize how popular you are, I see how many people are asking each video for a set of your nails. Your not new anymore, you dont have to worry about doing and not selling... You could hold up your dryer lint, and ask, who wants this... 20 people will say me, me, I do... lol And for the record, that's not a creative block, it's being scared to be you, and doing what you wanna do... you think you need to follow the herd trend, as that's what's requested. Do whats requested as it pays the bills, but throw out a little of you here and there, to keep it fun and keep the creative juices flowing. I bet you, the creative you will be wanted more than the trend.... Just as painters do with their art. Years from now, people will be saying... Omg!! You own a Slayed By Val!! Wow - I always wanted a set - but there's a 2 year waiting list... 😉

Love this video! And for the freestyle sets, think of some questions you can ask your client to help figure out their aesthetic and or what they’d be open to trying. You can also ask what they absolutely hate and basically not do that lol hope that helps! I make press on nails @eddiespressies.
