I love the idea of 5 minutes of silent art at the beginning of the class to set the tone!

It is a game changer! It lets them calm down and get into their projects.

I totally agree that enthusiasm with a project can get them excited, especially younger kiddos.I also like the phrase “necessary talking”. How do you recommend ways to build relationships with so many students?
@Managingthemess Жыл бұрын
I think we form relationships by how they feel when they are in our class. We might not get to talk to each student each week but if the students are having fun they associate that with a positive relationship with us. Learning their names and saying hello in the hall is important. If they see us helping others and feel that we would help them if needed it builds a relationship. If they feel happy, safe, and cared for in our art rooms they feel connected to us. With some students building their trust takes time. If they see you showing up each day being warm and pleasant to students while keeping control of the class their respect for you grows.

I just went back after a 10 year hiatus and it felt like my first year. I’ve been using so much of your tips and tricks . I can’t tell how many teachers have been talking about the improvement w my management. I struggle w add so it’s really difficult for me to stay organized. I always got compliments on my students art It never my classroom mgt. so I’m excited to see how my new improved classroom management will affect what they create.

How/on what platform do you access your podcasts? I teach classes of 30~35 students, and I found that low volume music just made the room louder, but maybe this would work

This gives more info on how I play the podcasts and the rules for students while we are listening. Podcasts and Music in the Art Room kzbin.info/www/bejne/laivhaRtd8ZshKM Basically, I go directly to the Wondery website (they own the podcasts we listen to) and I run the sound through my projector. I hope that helps!

I am re-watching this video! Do you do very much direct instruction with K-2 or do you give them directions and then let them get started? I worry that I do too much direct instruction but I'm not sure the littles will be able to remember what to do it without it.
@Managingthemess Жыл бұрын
I give them directions and set them loose. I don’t do much direct group instruction with them. I do put up steps or visuals on the board that we can refer back to. I like to let them explore and sort it out on their own….a kindergarten video is definitely on my list for the near future 😉

I greet them at the door as they walk in and tell them what I expect before they even walk in.
@Managingthemess Жыл бұрын
I love this strategy! I do believe students really enjoy being greeted too. Our hallway is very similar to driving on 95 near DC so I have to greet them once they are inside my room to avoid a traffic jam!

"...half of which has been in a Title 1 school. So I do not teach rainbow magical unicorn children." ......OUCH. Please think about what you are saying and the deeper meaning to it.
@Managingthemess6 ай бұрын
Working in a title one school isn’t something I do because it is easy. I do it because the students are more grateful in my experience and I feel I can have the greatest impact. Some of the students do not have the easiest home lives and at times their worries and stress impacts their learning. In this video, I share that I work in a title one school because I am proud of it. I share it to be more credible and relatable to other art teachers. If the strategies work in my school, they may very well work for others too. I did not want people thinking I taught in a very easy situation where everything is perfect and students always show up ready to learn. Please remember I am real teacher trying my best for the students each day. I apologize if it came across that I don’t care for my students or I think less of them based on their family’s income, that simply isn’t true.
