Relying on just some friction force of a shoe to do it doesn't look like it would work either. What DOES work is in BJJ when some white belt has a half guard grip around your knee like a vice, then rubs it around to shear your knee off. My kneecap literally moved and almost dislocated and I had to tap to it. It's not even technically illegal. I don't have a counter except to always keep my leg very deep or very shallow in half guard (not exactly knee-deep). I wish there were more techniques on how to avoid these kinds of "white belt techniques".

Due to this, many instructors go in with, often untested, half-knowledge. The inverted roundhouse/oblique kick to the patella is for destabilizing. It's a tool with a very specific use. Best used when the opponent has their weight on their front leg. Personally, I prefer hitting the inner thigh with it. It's more of a "catch you off guard" technique. It's unorthodox.

A few thoughts on a very nice back and forth between IcyM and Sergio: I think Kwon was the one who said this but Kickboxing should not be considered a martial art but rather a rule set. Same applies to MMA. You can enter in those kind of contests as long as you conform to the rules, regardless of your style or lack of there of. That being said, due to those rules some techniques crystallize as most effective and become the bread and butter for anyone wanting to participate in that ruleset . Then that is percieved as "kickboxing" or '"mma" while in reality you can apply elements of any style as long as they're not illegal. Now martial arts in general originated with the purpose of hurting/controlling/fighting other people within some geo-temporal context. Very importantly, a point Sergio makes in this video and capitalizes on in general, is that martial arts have this taint of misinformation attached to them. Sometimes over the course of centuries information is passed on with varying quality, sometimes with varying honesty (eg someone wants to make money of it and then mystifies stuff) and most importantly sometimes without the following context and meaning (eg then we have training techniques being though as fight ending combat techniques). Martial arts are full of ultra useful techniques if one can dissociate the bullshit from the effective techniques and apply them in the right context. What I think is that currently we have two of the best things that have happened to the world of martial arts and that we are living in a very good time. 1) The rise of the quite liberal MMA ruleset that pushed the reset button on a lot of bs very quickly. Being the jack of many trades is of crucial importance. Anyone who remembers their first time they did some submission grappling will understand that you don't want to fight a guy without any understanding of this distance regardless of your striking competence. Likewise, you don't want to bob and weave too deeply when leg kicks are in play, you don't want to not be aware that if someone kicks you in the nuts you won't instantly die as you may just freak out too much, etc. 2) You guys sharing the wisdom and knowledge on youtube. Martial artists that are devoted to the applicable aspect of their respective arts teaching the no bs style and also guys testing shit and paying with concepts. You cannot just claim things without backing it up. And in general, youtube sometimes allows us to see the best who have ever done it show us how it's done. Props guys. Keep the purification of martial arts running for the sake of all the upcoming generations that want to learn the art of fighting. ...and sorry for the long comment and @IcyMike for the lack of usual shittalking

I have seen the oblique kick used in the ring and in the street. I've seen it bounce off of people most times, but was good to stutter step them to allow you to stop their momentum like a teep, move, or follow up with something else. I've also seen it, and "ye olde side kick to the knee" completely fold a leg up 90 degrees twice. Once by one of the worst kickboxers in our school. Everybody beat this guy in sparring, but he utilized it in a two on one street assault and dropped one of the assailants on the first beat with an oblique kick to the knee. Completely folded it the wrong way. Career ending injury for his life of street crime. Probably had to take up panhandling, or online credit card fraud.

@Joe Blow I think you missed the part where he said "I've seen it bounce off of people most times". The people in the video don't deny that the kick can do this, they just say that the likelihood of it ending the fight is too low to rely on. With untrained fighters, who typically have their knee extended more in their stance, the likelihood goes up a lot, which is exactly what the person said here.

I have seen a guy get his knee destroyed with that kick. I have also seen it fail many more times than succeed.
@AveSicarius
@AveSicarius 3 жыл бұрын
You can definitely destroy a joint with actually quite little force IF it is in the perfect position, it has weight on it, and so many other factors that will never be feasible in almost any situation and only ever happens to the EXTREMELY unfortunate. If a joint isn't in the perfect position to hyperextend, tear, and other nasty outcomes (like dislocated knees and elbows which are truly horrible) the amount of force you need to exert into it would be insane. Hitting someone in the knee with a metal bat would probably do some serious damage, but in a supportive position, probably won't damage the joint beyond repair (as people claim to do with kicks). It will shatter your kneecap though, which is pretty horrible in itself. Bones and joints, especially in the legs, are built to deal with extreme forces exerted on them. The legs are built to support our entire weight amplified through physical exertion, if they damaged so easily we wouldn't be able to even run around without injury. It's like people saying they will break your arm with a palm strike. Could you do it? Probably, but nobody is ever going to be in that perfect position. You need to take them down, get them in a nice arm bar (etc), and exert serious force, which will damage the joints and muscles in the arm. If it doesn't work almost everytime, it isn't a technique worth using outside of demonstration.

Great video Mike and Sergio. I agree entirely, the people that say "oh if I do this I will break..." have never fought a single time in their lives. Fight ending strikes are rare in a real situation and not a single one of them is to the knee or groin. Hitting an opponent's head with enough force to temporarily do a lights-out can certainly be a fight-ending situation. I really liked the explanation that Sergio made regarding the Bagua form and how this was meant to be a kick to stop an opponent from moving closer. Also it was kewl to hear about his lineage, I had forgotten about that. We have a similar kick, the stomping kick in 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu. I use it often to bring my opponent's attention down before doing a hook. And absolutely Mike, like you said Kung Fu has its own flavors but as humans we can only fight in a certain amount of ways which at the end of the day merges into similar way regardless of the styles. A jab, a cross, a hook, will be the same thing in Kung Fu, Boxing, Muay Thai, etc.

@AstralS7orm
@AstralS7orm 5 жыл бұрын
@@yeetman4953 A kick made with intent to stop the opponent, their kick or keep distance. It has to be fast and accurate but not powerful since you're probably using opponent's momentum against them. It's strictly defensive. Performed out of measure most often as a counter, reactive. Usually not a high kick though a few taekwondo practitioners can pull off high checks which is quite a feat. So, fast teep can qualify, unpowered static low and medium kick, savate/kungfu kick at knee, fast muay kick at inner thigh. Roundhouse, karate/typical taekwondo style and most high kicks usually are too slow, more of an offensive strike.

Which would either end the fight, or not but the brain damage and inflammation intensifies overtime. The oblique kick is something else. Very tricky. I actually never thought that the horse stance can be utilized the way Sergio explained. Pretty interesting. I believe people should have a strong base in a single martial and branch out to others to fill in gaps that their main art lacks. However, this should be a slow process. If people try to learn so many arts at the same time fast, their fighting will end up in a mess. There was this Chinese Sifu in a Kung Fu Quest episode that said that at most a person can be good up to two styles of martial arts. This quote should be taken in great consideration imo.

I've used an oblique kick a few times in controlled sparring and real confrontations. Seems the important factors are range and if the other person is expecting it (i.e. squared up for the fight). At close range or if they're in the middle of an advance, it can definitely throw a person off balance and even send them sprawling. For me it, it counts as a fight ender because at that point I'd run away. :) Of course in sport fighting it's a different story.

As an old-school Okinawan karate guy, I can say that I make pretty frequent use of the oblique kick, or as we call it, the shovel kick or returning wave kick. I use it pretty much as described-- managing distance, and providing distraction. At close range, you can really put a hurting on somebody with it, but you are absolutely right about it not finishing fights. I do know of two situations, though, where it did. One was a fight with Miguel Torres, where his knee was hyper-extended and they stopped it. The other was a law enforcement situation that I got to hear about. Every other instance of this kick being used, though, is as you described

In wing chun we practice the push kick and lift kick on the wooden dummy and with pad or partner drills. It can be used as a quick stop for advancing opponent or as a stomping kick. You can even do it when grabbed or clinching. Also with shoes on a hard shin strike hurts a lot! It works best when you hide it and are non-telegraphed. In section 7 of the dummy set there is a pattern where you intercept, pivot and while you pull the arm you oblique kick the shin or knee to throw or pull down an advancing opponent, like a “power” trip. Loving these insights and collaboration videos, nice work!

Fascinating. Practical Wing Chun... my friend Kenneth Klok (black belt in Meishu Kung Fu like me, but he's a 3rd degree, I'm only 1st degree). Anyways, he trains Practical Wing Chun and is very good at it., Sergio said a lot of what I would say. There's different ways of using the oblique kick and low sidekick... but you can never expect a certain result, that's the problem with the idea of "I'd just hit him in the balls and finish the fight" or poke the eyes, or target the kneecap or whatever... most likely it won't finish the fight, it MIGHT, but don't count on it. As far as getting kicked in the groin, I've tried that several times a couple of times in sparring, once as a kid in a street fight, one time during a simple drill where I got kneed hard in the groin. The pain can be instant or come later, it can drop you involuntarily (that happened when I got kneeed in the groin during that drill. Also actually in one of my videos it kinda happened, where I was throwing a kick and got kicked in the balls while throwing it), but I've also been hit and continued.... it's a good target when it's available, but one should never expect a surefire result, you always gotta be ready to adapt in combat.

Since I punch with my right and kick with my left, I just do sharp side kick jabs to their knee if I’m standing with the left as the lead hand, which is what I normally do. If they try to roundhouse me in the left leg to put me down, I will immediately jet out and kick that leg holding all of their weight inwards and break it, or put them on the ground. I also like jabs since the person won’t react to them as fast because he doesn’t see a lot of the movement involved in building up the momentum when I throw it. I just shift my weight forward and push the hand out and hit him in the teeth, and I do it as if I were to use a spear. Back in the olden days, they used to apply the same concept to thrusting with a spear since it’s harder to see coming/defend against. Usually the right side has the two knockout blows, the kick coming from the right leg, and the cross coming from the torque of the torso off of the hips, in the right hand. I use certain movements depending on how the person fights. If he’s a boxer, I use certain entries depending on which punches he throws and use grappling techniques on him. If he’s a good grappler, I’m going to want to throw those hard and heavy strikes to his jaw and liver area. If he’s a tall fighter, he’s getting taken down. If he’s really defensive, I’m going to fight him off balance. Now I’m not special, I’m not here to stroke my ego or condemn any combat forms, I’m talking about stances and adaptability. In the real world of self defense, you’ll ether see the blow coming or you won’t. Someone might just creep up from behind and hit you in the head with a rock and run off with your wallet, phone, and whatever else might be valuable. Or, you might get someone mad and they try to rush you, that’s when you act and run away, depending on whether or not you think that he can catch you if you were to run. Running should always be considered first over fighting. If he’s fast, don’t turn your back to him. If he’s slow, fat or out of shape, you should just go. Also, you could pick something up and use it against him. You could get a chair and throw it at him, a rock and beat him with it, you could pick up a 2x4 and violently swing it down at him, etc.

Everyone thinks that the phrase is 'Jack of all trades, master of none' but they forget that there are 3 parts to the sentence. One little thing I feel I could add, is that over time the saying I think was changed but what it should be is Jack of all trades master of one, not none. Well it will, but it is difficult to crush it properly. You either need to crush it with vice-grip-strong hands, or punch em straight in the throat (or knife hand etc.). It's not so easy to do. More likely yeah you damage it in some debilitating way but they can still breathe and fight. Of course if you *do* crush it then that is a life threatening injury, so probably another good reason to ban attacks straight to the throat.

Like a lot of Wing Chun (and Jeet Kune Do), the oblique kick is largely about intercepting -- which you guys aptly demonstrate. I would also note though that in Wing Chun, the oblique kick is also done out of the clinch, in which case you're stepping down and in on the knee while holding the neck. If you hit at the magic angle and time, yeah, you could bust a guy's knee and end the fight...but (just like you said) that's an ideal extreme. More often its as a form of a takedown.

We trained these kicks at kyokushin karate. I had pretty fast legs, so I'd use it often to stop someone coming forward. If you time and angle it well, you can jam your heel into the front of their calf as they are taking a step, and can't flex it to protect it, then it can hurt pretty bad. It also let's you create distance, so it's pretty good when you fight someone smaller who is coming at you like a tank, but it is by no means something that will end a fight by itself.
