To summarize (not as good as watching the video!) 1: End with a disaster. What is the character's response? 2: End with a cliff-hanger. Leave a question hanging in the air. 3: End with a revelation or new info. Important info only! 4: End with internal monologue. An emotional recap from the character. Helps to chill out the pacing. 5: End with a symbolic image. Can set the scene, and explain character perspective.

Fantastic points! Another one that I like (when it's done well) is when an eventful/emotional chapter comes to an end with two characters talking either about the things to come or things that have just happened (presumably to them or things they cared deeply about). I think it's similar to the one where you end the chapter with the character's thoughts, but it has the advantage of showing how multiple characters feel about their circumstances and has the potential for some extra emotion or even some character development. I'll also give my vote to a part 2!

I find that I've fallen into the habit of writing the beginning and ending of chapters. It's that danged middle... I've done the disaster: the experimental star drive explodes with the force of multiple H-bombs, and my two mains are presumed dead. Since it's the first chapter, you're pretty sure they survived, but it does start things with a literal bang. I've done the reveal: Paula has been gradually learning the language and culture of this strange new world, when she discovers that everyone she's met, friend and foe alike, thinks that she is a prostitute. And she's not. NOW what does she do? I'm fond of the cliff-hanger: the couple is reunited, their kingdom prospers under their rule, and a coup results in them being abducted by rival factions. See you next book! The internal monologue and symbolic images are something I'm going to try. I'm not sure I've ended anything with either. So thanks! This video has let me know what I'm doing right, and what I'm not doing at all.
