I think beginners don't appreciate the raw beauty and design of the underpainting ! It's my absolute favorite part as it's where you really get to design and align all the elements and then get crazy with the colour! Love this underpainting

Thank you. I am three weeks old. My budget allowed me the sixty half stick blick pro and four ten half stick Rembrandt sets. I have nupastel I found out after asking you. I found 93 of the 96 set. Many brokers and smalls but to find that many was great. Thank you for your help.

I think when we use less expected or local colour , it gives our work a whole different spin! I'm a big fan of using colour just to see what I get so a weird choice is a good choice

Wallis is a sanded pastel paper that is no longer made. It used to be a favorite of many pastel artists! I still have a small stash left and use it with care!

Hi Karen, I’m very interested in the virtual workshop that you mentioned! We’ve moved from Santa Barbara and are now in Boca Raton, FL. so if you’re teaching a live workshop again in Florida please let me know!! With the busyness and stress of moving I haven’t painted since January so it’s time to get started again!!

Hi Lynn! I grew up in Boca and still have family there! Send me an email at Karen Margulis@ gmail.com to get on my interest list for the online workshops!

Hi...is it possible to paint a misty night landscape , with a full moon using pastels? I've googled it and can only find demos using oil or acrylic paints. The scene I'm trying to recreate is a Kentucky horse pasture with a horse in the foreground and trees and board fence in the background. Full moon shining down through the fog/mist. It has a light bluish grey tint. I've tried several times and it just comes out looking muddy and cartoonish. The closest tutorial I've found is your winter landscape demo.

I’m mesmerized by your work! You are awesome! I’m a beginner of pastel paintings, can you tell me what kind of easel you use and what do you recommend? Thank you
@KarenMargulis4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Shirley! I am using a Blick brand aluminum easel. It is inexpensive yet sturdy!
@shirleyrobinson89004 жыл бұрын
Karen Margulis sorry, may I ask one more question, why does yours look like an old classroom blackboard? I looked at the aluminum ones at Blick....they look flimsy and any little pressure can fall over ?!
@KarenMargulis4 жыл бұрын
@@shirleyrobinson8900 I am also using a piece of black foam core on the easel to attach my paper. Here is the link to the easel: www.dickblick.com/products/blick-studio-aluminum-single-mast-easel/

I love your painting. Your explanations are ver clear. May I ask, do you ever use Grumbacher soft pastels? If you did, would you let me know what you think of them? I just have a small number of Sennelier soft pastels and I found pre-owned Grumbacher soft pastels on eBay. I would really appreciate your opinion.
@KarenMargulis3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! When I first started with pastels I had an old small set of Grumbacher pastels and I enjoyed using them. Since the original Grumbachers are no longer made I have not tried to find them again. My favorite pastels are Terry Ludwig but those Grumbachers were very nice to use. I found an interesting article about them you might like:www.artistsnetwork.com/art-mediums/pastel/grumbacher-and-rembrandt-two-historic-pastel-brands/

I find when you alcohol wash on this paper it tends to wash the pastel away as opposed to on UART or whatever it sinks it in and makes a stain! I think the dry rub underpainting is best on a colored ground, what do you think?
@KarenMargulis4 жыл бұрын
True but I like the dry rub on light color paper to fill in the light bits and tone the paper.

Hi Karen, that was a wonderful lesson and a beautiful painting, as usual. Thanks so much! Guess what? My Terry Ludwigs arrived a couple of days ago!!! Wow they’re so luscious. At first I just looked at them for half a day. They cost a lot in Australian dollars - $450 including shipping. Our dollar is weak atm. I’m very interested in your lessons, the ones you mentioned in this video. Please let me know what I need to do. Best wishes from Sandy 🌷💐💕
