Surly there's a better way than this?? I don't use color channels, at all, nor am I interested in hassling with them. Any other tips to fix this default behavior? Maybe a macro or something?

Not really.. an alternative could we to make to load/copy paste the image in a new document, mask it there and then copy to "smaller" document.
