This is exactly how I was raised to take my shoes on and off when entering and leaving. Only thing is we didn't have that designated space, instead, we used something called a breezeway. Now that I think of it idk what a breezeway is but it was the small room we first entered that we used to carefully take off our outdoor shoes (and coats/jackets/scarves) and put on house slippers.

I can’t believe I found this video. My friends and family think I’m crazy when I freak out about the way they remove their shoes in my place. I didn’t know that there were areas in homes built for the specific reason. Now I know that my OCD isn’t being crazy and that this is a legit thing.

I am so grateful for this video. Now I have something to show people before they come into my home. They ALWAYS step in the shoe area after taking off their shoes and then step into my non-shoe home. I hate it. I rarely invite people over.

Why don't people where I live get this? Whenever I ask people to take their shoes off, they take them off in the dirty area, then seem to shuffle around in their socks and do a little dance in the dirt before walking into the clean area in their now filthy socks. They may just as well keep their shoes on. I wouldn't say I'm particularly on the very clean and tidy side, but dirty socks in my house really gets to me.

I wish I lived in Japan. Bc every time I ask someone in US to remove their shoes before entering they resent it!! Most of the time they don't want to take the time to untie expensive tennis shoes. 👟😭

I’m from the UK and my mother raised me to take shoes off before entering the house. It’s not all that common here though, there have been times I’ve gotten odd looks from asking people if I need to remove my shoes.

Kid going out's foot hit the ground before getting in shoe, that's the same thing as incorrectly going in . and yes, ALWAYS bring your own socks. you should also talk about WHY this is, it's Hygiene.

I came upon the other video you were in, talking about how you got to Japan and what it's like living there. You are so well spoken, you should make videos. It came up in my recommendations so I clicked on it, saw the whole thing then ended up here. Make some more videos while it's hot.

Many parts of the world do this, however it is not always done correctly as they step in the same place they remove shoes. I think a way needs to be invented where once you step into the clean area there is a way to place the shoes and bring them back without stepping back into the part where the shoe was imagine if there was a group of people at your home how and where would u place the shoes

Hi from Germany. I love this, I want to include it in our home 🫶 but I have one question. Where do Japanese people store their other shoes? We are a household of three and we have so many different shoes; rubber boots, winter boots, sandals…I would greatly appreciate it if you could make a video about that.

My house is very annoying, because it has a reverse gengkan, where the floor you enter on is taller than the floor of the main house, so even though I take my shoes off as soon as I come inside, dirt ends up falling down into the main house anyway. It's infuriating.

Have you ever encountered smelly feet?🤢 With everyone having to take off their shoes does it ever get uncomfortable? Is there something special Japanese people do to counter this somewhat natural occurrence?😁 Do they talk/gossip about the stinky feet visitors??😏

The soles of shoes worn outside are much dirtier than stinky feet. Why can't you think of stepping on a lot of dog poop, dog urine, other people's saliva, and all sorts of filth on the outside?
