However, if it weren't for your films, all this knowledge of mine would just be an unorganized mess. Your films are outstanding - starting with a nice ambience, ending with relevant information. one other EQ-trick for cut through vocals: subtract/scoop out mid-high 'gaps' in instrument channels (keys, lead guitar) that compete in that range. gives room to the vocals vs. the band. EQ is not just the channel itself, but the whole context of the mix.

thanks for the detailed explanation. the repetition and speed you are explaining at are very helpful. 2 follow-up questions that are potentially touched on in other content. 1) what do the colors represent in the bars? does it match the channel labels, or are frequencies also represented by colors on the display? or something else? 2) is it possible to translate bad frequencies you are hearing in a room to the visual graph on the display? or is that something you more have to know what frequency you are hearing to supress it on the meter?

Useful video. I have an analog mixer with only 3 knobs (H, M, L) plus Stereo EQ, paired with a PreSunos compressor studio channel. How can I apply your settings with my current setup?
@rickdey54073 ай бұрын
Drew , I have multiple musicians using Shure Beta 58’s for their vocals, I use the Beta 58 preset from your library I purchased from you. On the Mainout I use the Stereo Combinator inserted to FX 4 and use the Polish Mix preset. I luv this preset on the mainout as it just puts a push in the lows mid highs and highs. My problem is every now and then I get this high pitch feedback from the mainout speakers and when I look at the eq of the vocalists who are using those Sm58’s I don’t see the feedback in their rta. My question is would it be coming from the 1 db bump on the Stereo Combinator on the highs. A lot of the other musicians I mix for use my 4 Sennheiser 935 microphones and I don’t get that from them. What would be your recommendation? I have used your presets with the band I play in and other bands I mix and their crowds are telling them it the best they ever heard them. Just trying to come up with a solution. Thanks Rick

@DuesGibGolfandLife2 жыл бұрын
Eq won’t fix this. You need to treat the room acoustically
@DrewBrashler2 жыл бұрын
original_pokey is correct. I would suggest trying to treat the room or changing how the PA is configured to minimize the amount of energy on the reflective surfaces. A few quick fixes would be, looking at changing your microphones to have different pickup patterns to help reduce the amount of room noise. Having your vocalists keep their microphone 1-2 inches rather than 4-6 inches away also will help a lot! Hope this helps!

@tonylancer73672 жыл бұрын
Hey Drew, thanks for the video. Got a couple of Q's for you as an amateur mixer: - Is it necessary to purchase the same mics for a band to make them sound consistent? I don't have the budget to test different mics on people to see if their vocals shine through. - I'd love for you to do a newer video on gain stating, I know everything is supposed to be at it's loudest at -12 db (I don't know the scale), so I want to know is it okay if the fader is above unity to make the source louder (instead of interfering with gain)?
@DrewBrashler2 жыл бұрын
Great question! NO you do not need all of your vocalists to be on the same microphone. You actually should be choosing the best microphone for the vocalist. There is a great website: microphone-data.com/ that you can find the frequency patterns of your microphones to help select the right mic for the vocalist. For instance, if you have a more bass heavy vocalist, you might select a microphone with a little less low end, so that you don't have to EQ as much bass out. Or if you had a vocalist that you wanted more consonants out of, you might select a condenser microphone with a high freq sensitivity. As for the gain staging, that is a great idea for a video, I'll start working on that. -18dBFS is the point that the X32 considers to be unity gain. dBFS means dB full scale. 0dBFS is the point where the X32 clips the channel and moves into distortion. So as long as you are setting your channels around the -18 to -15 point on the meters, that should be a consistent amount of gain for the musicians for IEM's/monitors and enough gain for you at FOH. Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot #Drew ....I've been wanting to ask .what does the key filter in the compressor section do actually?
@DrewBrashler2 жыл бұрын
The key filter in the compressor allows you to have the compressor focus in on only the sound you want it to listen to. For instance if you wanted to turn a compressor into a de-esser, you can roll the filters up to only listen to the high frequency information. Or if you were wanting to have the snare drum microphone only compress to the snare drum and not the hi-hat, you can lower the filter to not listen to the high frequency information which would help the compressor only hear the snare and not the hi-hat. Hope this helps!

I have some hearing loss , so I eq a lot with the RTA , so what does a perfect RTA look like and noticed yours is different colors could you explain
@DrewBrashler2 жыл бұрын
Hey David! I just made a quick video for you explaining how to get the multi-colored RTA: kzbin.infoUgUSmd92OLU?feature=share. The 'perfect' RTA is one that is going to change from genre to genre and from instrument to instrument. But if you think about the frequencies that you should have, vs not have, you can still use the RTA as a baseline. For instance, I know that I don't want any vocal coming through my subwoofers, so I'm going to find the lowest frequency of the vocal and bring the low cut up to it as long as it is above 100Hz, I know I have dialed that in fairly close. But as a general rule of thumb for myself, if I am mixing in a loud environment, I am typically trying to reduce muddiness in the 200-300Hz range, and keep the high frequency from getting too brittle typically in the 4kHz and up. I hope this helps!
