I used to mute the room mics for the same reason and then realized how important they are when I saw how some of my favorite mixers were implementing them. But I think this is the best video to explicitly state how important they are to a drum tone and how to actually mix them. Most other videos on KZbin make it seem like the close mics on the snare/kick are the most important. But it's actually the room. Without them, the drum tone sounds too wimpy. It's insane how much you can actually lower the close mics, and with a well-mixed room mic the drum track still sounds decent in a mix haha. Thanks for the help, exactly what I needed!

Personally I feel all recorded instruments should have a room mic. But I don't even have so studio so 🤷

I loved this video! I am interested though, are there any occasions where you would keep the high end in the room mics? Maybe with a section that's been stripped back perhaps. Also, is there another reason to strip them back aside from harshness? My guess would be that the high end might mask transient attack.

Thank you for this! I've always had trouble with the room mics, even when mixing programmed drums. I used to delete them too, but now I'm finally starting to understand their importance in the overall tone of the drum and of the song! By the way, what do you think of mono-ing the room mics? Sometimes I find their stereo image is too overwhelming, giving me trouble to correctly pan them accordingly to how the kit was recorder.

I tend to like the width it adds in stereo, but sometimes like you said, mono just feels better for the song 😊

Hey, I have watched your videos before, but have now subbed. If you get a chance to respond to this question, I would be forever grateful! Do you ever use both a mono room mic as well as a stereo room mic? Or alternatively, a close and a far room mic, or something else to that effect? And if so, how do you treat them differently? If not, why? I actually am pretty happy overall with how my drums sound but lately I have been seeking out something different than my kind of "go-to" approach, as it is feeling somewhat stagnant. I'm also noticing that while my drums do sound good, they still don't quite have the definition of a pro mix. I'm feeling that relates to maybe too much "space" being brought in because of room mics but not sure. Anyways, just curious if and how you edit multiple room mics. Thanks!

I've tried this and sometimes the rooms get too dark and make my shells sound dull and muddy once I bring it up.

Sounds like you get most of your drum sound from the rooms. In that case, you would want to process the rooms much less than what I show in this video. Maybe try doing everything half as much 🤘

@@RaytownProductions Not really, I try to get a good balance of both, specially when using sample augmentation, the real rooms and overheads help bring back some of that realness and glue everything together.

That all comes down to what you are going for. I would recommend experimenting to see what sounds and works best for your situation. In my experience, a wide spaced pair as far away from the kit was magical for me when placed about 2 ft off the ground.
