So, I was approached recently to record a child's celebration of life for the family. I'm no professional, but I have a little more experience and better equipment than the person who usually live streams the church services from a phone, and there wasn't really money to hire a true professional, so I did what I could to help. The audio didn't come out terrible, but some last-minute problems with tying into the sound board left me no choice but to rely on my backup audio, a mic I placed close to the front of the room. I'm still working on it, but even just the degree of improvement I was able to make almost immediately to the audio from watching this tutorial is a night-and-day kind of difference, and I have never really done anything with equalizers before in my life. Thank you so much. I know it's maybe a small thing in the course of world events, but I am going to be able to make something so much better for a grieving family because of your video.

thx alex, very informative video ! That's exactly what i needed to know about EQ-ing the voice in my videos... Now i have to apply than ! Question : do you do your EQ with headphones or speakers ? My Headphones are Sennheiser and my speakers are PreSonus Eris. thx !!!
@voscripts
@voscripts 4 жыл бұрын
It's generally best to use speakers over headphones while processing your sound, including EQ and particularly if you're working in an acoustically treated room. Because headphones directly deliver the sound to your ears, it's very easy to overly focus on little problems and thus over EQ. Many lower-cost headphones also tend to sound boxy which can cause one to cut more in the 500hz range than is necessary. However, the key is to understand, how what you're listening through be it speakers or headphones, translates to other speakers (or earbuds, headphones etc.) Just like many TVs can look different in color and contrast,, warmth etc, speakers are the same with sound and it's good to listen on multiple sets to give a better representation about what is actually happening sonically. I suggest EQ using your speakers and listen to how they sound on your headphones and vice-versa. It's also important to listen back at consistent volume levels. Perhaps a video on speaker/volume calibration is in order Alex?

Haha, if you're working in FCP all of this stuff still totally translates! It's just really hard to collaborate with FCP because it doesn't talk to other programs very well (DaVinci for color, Pro Tools for sound, etc). If you're using it as a standalone you'll be totally fine! But when you want to start working with a post sound person/team, it's really challenging getting material out of FCP compares to Avid or Premiere.

Alex Knickerbocker FCPX works with Resolve really well back and forth, much better than Premiere > Resolve. But yes, FCPX needs an additional third-party plugin to go out to ProTools.
@remektekmedia6641

I beg to differ. FCPX has great built in EQs, including one with live freq analysis. Many of these come straight out of Logic X. You can also get great plugins from the lakes of waves.com or accusonis.com and others. Additionally using FCPX Roles and Compound clips facilitate very useful and flexible way to apply your tuning steps to multiple clips.
