I learned how to get out of quicksand when I visited Mont Saint-Michel (#France) by a friendly and funny tour guide :D #quicksand #escape #wind #survival Headphone users should be careful with the high volume.

I've added captions here for people who cant hear what the instructor is saying at (2:00), which is when the instruction starts: "So, to get out, the problem is: I musn't stay alot of time inside, because if I stay alot of time [inside the quicksand], all the water will get out, because I've dug some holes into the layer of sand, and the water gets out. You see? Everything becomes liquid. So I must get out very quickly because it could become hard - very hard. The water gets out, and the sand [will] get hard. Because the sand is soft, because the sand is full of water but [if the water gets out] the sand [will get hard]. Ok? So I must get out quickly. Check it out, I must [inaudible/not english] put my weight on one of my leg[s]. Like that (2:44). Okay? And then I, mix water and sand and make small movements like that, as I can. And I get out. The problem is not the first leg, but the second. The first is ok - quite easy - but some people think 'Oh I'm alive!' and get out, [but] they pull on their ligaments, the tendons and so on. So to get out I must kneel, like that (3:16). Put all my weight on my knee. All my weight on my knee. And this is hard. And I must move my second leg as I did for my first [leg]. And I must kneel again, and get out, okay? And if I get out, and if I have quicksand up to my waist, its very very [difficult]." The instructor then encourages participants to try it on their own.

Jokes aside this was really helpful. Let's summarize 1) You put all of your weight on one of your legs. 2) Wiggle the other leg to let the sand mix with water and free it. 3) Put your knee of the free leg on the surface of the quicksand and lean forward. 4) While putting all of your weight on your knee, wiggle the other leg till it's free. Congrats you're free, but always remember to stay calm in the quicksand and to think logically.

Quicksand isn't just a phenomenon of ocean shores. I've seen it under the right conditions in desert river channels like the Little Colorado in Arizona and the Dirty Devil in Utah. It can also occur in braided rivers channels in the silt of glacial outwash rivers in the Yukon and Alaska. A climber coming down from Mount Logan died when they tried to pull him out of a quicksand entrapment and broke his spine. While paddling the Dolores River in Colorado I once encountered a cow stuck in quicksand. The group stopped and managed to free the animal.

We had the same experience exploring a channel at Lake Powel over 35 years ago when it was much fuller. Was fun at first as water trapped in the sand was springy but we all realized it could be a trap fairly easily. In a group so was not scary just fascinating!

Mont St Michel is a stunning place. Beautiful views. But there are signs all over warning people of quicksand and high tides. At certain times of the day, all of the walking paths are completely engulfed in water and whole place is surrounded by water. It’s a majestic place but also has a mystical vibe. So happy I got the chance to visit. 🙏🏽

You don't usually die from quicksand that way. However if you are stuck and the tide comes then you really don't have much time. Especially in Mont saint Michel because of the landscape the tide comes as a wave very suddenly. It still take a while to reach 40 cm but that's probably really scary
@devonseamoor2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, what clever decision to instruct the walkers on the sand around Mont St. Michel. I've been there, but IN the solid "Mont" itself, not on the sand. If there's one thing I fear most, dying in quicksand is just that. This tour-guide did it very well, she knows what she's doing. At the start I was shocked to see all the sand moving under those feet, as if the whole group could vanish in one second, brrrrrr. Fortunately they learned.
